You had to believe that Kevin Freeman was going to play a major part in bringing the rebounding to the team. The man was an animal on the boards! And the work definitely paid off against DePaul. Hopefully, they shove a leprechaun up Mike Brey's on Saturday...back into the chamber, Brey!!! ;)

Unless I read the article incorrectly KFree was only responsible for naming the drill and not for its implementation or even the execution of the drill. That was done by KO. Kfree dubbed it the Chamber Drill.

I love it.......it's all about the box out even the skinny guys can rebound if you "hit" your guys first!!

Funny thing about the word "hit" in reference to blocking out or hip checking/forearming a guy trying to gain position......I used the word "hit" a few times when yelling (really quietly lol) at my son at a recent game and couple parents kept looking at me. Next time down he drilled someone but it was legal as the guy was coming down the middle full speed and they started yelling at me......"you told him to do that who the hell do you think you are telling him to hit someone....." I had to explain myself and the use of the word in basketball while letting them know that was a legal boxout and the guy was just at full speed...the dad's got it but the mom' gave me the look all night.....love the word and it is so true.....guys coming across the middle on D in front of you also need to be "hit" to get them of their route.......this is very much a contact sport and if your aren't hitting anyone you aren't playing hard!

Hard to say. Freeman definitely named it, and he definitely told people to get back in it. Don't know who invented it. Bottom line; Freeman doesn't play around when it comes to rebounding, and Ollie doesn't play around when it comes to basketball... ;)

I think we might need to reserve judgment until a couple games after a gutted Depaul frontcourt. Sounds good though

There's no doubt without Kirk they weren't the same but it was noticeable in regards to the effort to put bodies on people. Much different and much more aggressive to the ball.....not sure how that translates against Cooley/ND and LVille but much better in understanding physically what it takes!! It's a start.......

This speaks volumes about ko as coach. love reading this. the guy knows how to make adjustments and correct what needs to be corrected. so excited about the future of this program.

Sweet. Get back to basics. Lets see how we do against better frontcourts but, yeah, it's a step in the right direction.

I think our coaching staff would destroy any other in a game of pick up . I wonder if the recent experience with the game translates to player development.I havent seen any obscene boneheaded plays this year (a few boatright rushed shots notwithstanding), so they definitely have the kids clear attention.

Ollie is going to be great. He will do well on the recruiting circuit too, just watch. Remember: I'm a very early adopter of Ollie, I was on board last year, long before Calhoun retired. It's not blind belief either. All the elements are there for this guy to become an absolute gun at UConn.

That's the good thing about having coaches that played overseas, NBA, Delvep. League etc. they played for a bunch of coaches that you could learn different things from. So use the best drills from each and try them with your team. Experience can come in many different forms same with learning.

For sure JC thought long and hard about his successor. The fact that he got KO to retire from the NBA, pass-up a NBA Assistant gig and come be an assistant coach at UConn and then to catapult him over all the other coaches in the Calhoun coaching tree to be the next head coach speaks volumes about KO.

I really did not have an opinion on KO one way or another, but trusted JC because he went above and beyond to get KO in this spot. It wasn't like how some other coaches simply handed it off to one of their long time assistant coaches. Had JCs replacement been Tom Moore, Miller, Hobbs - I'd be much more suspicious of the move.

Been most impressed with KOs communications skills. He is humble, confident and inspiring all at once. Can't really say that about any of our other prominent coaches, past or present.

Had a similar incident with word "tackle" at a soccer game.

This drill sounds very similar to what Bobby Knight used to do. I recall an interview where they talked to him about his rebounding drill and team rebounding. He said ideally, on defensive rebounding, the ball hits the floor. Blocking out is everything. I'm really pleased to see Kevin stressing those kinds of fundamentals, as those are the hallmarks of well coached teams.

questions: what does Glenn Miller do? Isn't he in charge of the big men? He got a single mention in the article, but I'm been wondering what's the deal with Miller as a coach/contributor to the staff?

NOT a trick question; really. Just wanting hear from the knowledgeable on the yard an obective overview....

That's what the reporter was told. ;)

While I agree with you that implementation and execution is not Freeman's role, there are ways he can add influence to team improvements.

Ollie is not the creator or owner of every drill, there is a staff that discusses the problems and solutions. Ollie only makes the decision, however sometimes he needs no discussion. I know you know all this, but Freeman is limited on the court but is involved in problem solving. Who knows who's idea it was but its shows the diversity and the experience of the coaching staff. Introducing a major new drill in mid-season is desperate and aggressive, but shows the staff's unwillingness to live with our rebounding problem. Most importantly it shows Ollie knows how to get things done.

Great Coach we have. Greater Coach if it works next game and the next...... (i.e. execution).

Problem with all college coaches is that you have post-teenagers really doing the execution. Hell of a way to make a living, depending on youngsters for job security.
