Hi everyone,

I got some time with Arkansas State Head Coach Destinee Rogers to talk about coming up to Storrs to play UConn. We talk about how she built her roster through the transfer portal, give you some names to be on the lookout for, talk their style of play, and more. Tune in!

They’re a pressing team, it seems. All 40 mins if they can manage it. And they live and die by the 3 pt shot. This could feel a bit like a rerun of Jackson St last season.

It is very difficult to beat a team if all you do is shoot threes. ASU will turn the ball over a lot, they will have trouble with UConn's size and they aren't as quick. In the end this will be a difficult task for ASU and I would expect this game to be over as soon as it starts.

Great Interview! "We play REALLY fast"... "Pressure you in the half court"
" Get stops"... We shoot " a ton of threes"... '"We're 10 deep" ...A lot of bench
points... "It's a dream come true (coming to Storrs... being able to shake
Geno's hand). Sounds like another team that we played this year... NO?

The lost to Xavier earlier this year, so, not too worried. I’m sure they’re a better team since then, but in no way a threat to UConn.

I watched the highlights of the final of their conf tournament vs James Madison and they don't just shoot 3s. They took a lot of mid-range shots and looked very good. It seems like all their players can shoot 3 as well. It should be a good game to test Uconn's perimeter defense. It is hard to tell how fast they are.

I just watched those same highlights, following your lead. I agree it’s hard to say how fast Ark St actually are. But they definitely like to run and they are gunners. They were badly outplayed in the first half by JMU but came back with great energy in the second and won it in OT.

I was mainly looking to see what sort of defense they play. It looks like a sagging zone alternating with a frenetic switching man defense. They do a full court trapping press some of the time. But they are vulnerable to transition buckets on the back end of it. This appears to be a team speed issue and leads them to back off the press. They gave up a lot of 3s in the halfcourt man defense even though they have a frantic rotation. And this despite the fact that JMU mainly didn’t use screens to force switches. They were able to create open 3s individually.

As for their offense, for the most part JMU did not close out well on the perimeter, even though they got a couple of flashy blocks in the first half. This allowed for lots of 3s that were open enough.

Against UConn’s offense, I suspect their rotations will not be quick enough especially given our shooters. And there’s no way they are big or strong enough to keep Sarah or Jana off the offensive glass, and the high-low game will be impossible to stop. They are also not very good at stopping back door cuts.

Will UConn’s defense be able to close out effectively against their perimeter game? I think so, but they are sure to hit some of them. They have a good perimeter passing game, but I think Paige and Sarah will take that away. They have no high-low passing game or screening-cutting game. Their guards like to drive in from the wing. I suspect Kaitlyn Azzi KK and Ash will shut that down very effectively. This means the perimeter game won’t have the benefit of guards slashing to the rim to create perimeter openings.

Arkansas St was a defensive power in their conference, rather like Jackson St had been last year. And their offense benefited from this. But when they came up against UConn it was clear they weren’t prepared for defense and offense on that scale. I have a feeling Arkansas St will have a similar experience. Look for UConn to open a big first half lead, and Arkansas St to make a 4th quarter run powered by perimeter shooting that will fall short

I remember us being up 20 points at half against Jackson st then in the second half we were played even. It could be a blowout or it could be a 20 point game .

They are a running and pressing team, remember Quinnipiac a few years ago, this could be really ugly.

Watching the same Ark St vs JMU game that others watched, one thing that I observed was the frequent defensive breakdowns in the half court by the Red Wolves, leading to numerous backcut layups and wide open threes. More than any other team in WBB, UConn will exploit those breakdowns on defense.

I'm thinking of the first round game in 2018, when UCONN went up against a St. Francis team that loved to run and gun. The final score was UCONN 140, St. Francis 52.

I really, really like coach Rogers. She has terrific attitude and a huge belief (in herself, in her players, in her program). I'll be rooting for her and her players - right after UConn is done with them :)

My sentiments exactly! Very impressive head coach. Interviews such as these are what makes me think the trajectory for WCBB is way, way, way up!

UConn will win and it shouuldnt be tuff. They almost cant loose. By how much will be determined by who is on the court. I expect some rust and we need to get over being rusty for Mondays game. No worries for Saturday

I'm sure Geno has warned the team not to take Arkansas State lightly.........any team that shoots the three with proficiency is always a threat so while I assume UConn will win handily, I'd take nothing for granted..........

I'm not sure the woman's game has caught up to the men's in terms of high seeds beating lower seeds in the tournament. There are much fewer upsets in the early women's bracket. Look for Geno to start to sub the bench around the beginning of the fourth quarter.

I had a nightmare the other night that UConn lost to Arkansas St!!! Boy was I ever glad to wake up from that one.

As a UConn fan, I took so much heat about that game. If that starts to happen again, let’s make sure our subs are in the first quarter because that game was like watching professionals against elementary school kids.

I fear for any opponent that has to play a well rested, healthy UConn team.
Somebody has to say this: Yeah, but what about the rust! Gotta say I don't recall a first round rust game. Anyone remember one?

Well the algorythm pushed this 4 month old game at me: a very high scoring game with the Red Wolves and Arizona State, 100-96 for the Wolves.
