New Husky Logo - All White Version

President Herbst was quoted earlier in the week as not knowing how the logo got to be a Samoyad, though even I know how it came to be, and may have even saw the actual dog back in the day.

It's the only white husky out there.

A few weeks ago, ESPN screwed up when it did bracketology, and it somehow put our old logo next to Duke's name. Fans everywhere noted it on twitter and said, "UConn isn't banned anymore!" The freakin' logo was miniscule, you could barely make it out, but people could see it was all-white. Instantly recognizable. This logo needs a split second of thought before one determines that it is the UConn husky and not other ones.

I actually think that's the best thing. The all-white costume got so dirty so quickly leading to an unnecessary amount of cleaning and wearing out the costume faster than it should. At times, our costumed mascot looked like it was from a thrift store it was so worn. Of course, during the big championship games and what not they unveiled a cleaner looking one...but some of those football games...yeah...that Husky saw a lot.

I don't remember where I heard it, but I am pretty sure part of the redesign was a new costume.

The University's mascot is "The Husky" not "The White Husky". Branding can be about consistency or about broadening the idea. Pick your choice. I'm non-discriminatory. Maybe it's time to get a black and white Jonathan or a black Jonathan or one of the myriad color variations that fit into the breed.

Or maybe we should just consider all white athletic teams. Of course no one here is arguing for such a thing. But I would bet that if outside sources heard the arguments about an all white husky, they would love to run with it to make a case against the university even if the case is baseless.

The change was drastic enough to warrant an explanation to whomever inside the AD had a say in its approval. That explanation must have included a reason the new logo wasn't based on a white dog.

I'd like to hear it. The fact that the alternate white version looks pretty damn good will hurt whatever press release is currently being penned.

Were people this upset about Jonathan the Samoyed back in the 80s? That logo ignored 50 years of tradition by not even using a Husky.

Here's the bottom line: this logo isn't going anywhere, and in 2 or 3 years, people will associate this with UConn -- ALL of UConn's sports, might I add -- and forget why they hated it so much. I can't believe the previous logo had many supporters when it first came out; as much as it grew on me and I love it, it IS pretty cartoony.

Honestly, this is the gang that couldn't shoot straight revisited. First they make a production about the new identity, but leave out the Husky for some new unveiling...it gets leaked so in desperation they email the world last night "releasing" the new logo...it gets panned by the majority of students, alumni and fans, so now they are back pedaling...it is no wonder they got schooled by Louisville...Maybe Susan needs to spend another couple of hundred thousand on another media advisor. This one seems at best modestly competent...

First of all, the Samoyad version has only been around since 2002. The one before that was really more husky. Second, when it came out is was more or less done without all the fanfare and it was a relatively modest alteration really. This is dramatic. I think in 2 or 3 years this one will go the way of the BC duck eagle...it lasted 2-3 years, everyone hated it, and they gradually phased it out. They didn't really announce the were doing it. But they just stopped using it and started using something else. That, I think will be Toupee Dog's fate. They've made too big a deal about it to back off now, but in a year or two it will be dumped either in favor of UCONN entirely, or it will be quietly replaced with something similar but more consistent with UConn's history.

Not really. Used to play Party Poker with my Husky25 moniker and I got way more Go UDub!!!'s than UConn.

Of course that might just mean there are more degenerates on the West Coast. Alas, I don't judge.
 
You guys are gonna be jealous. Just got myself a new UCONN jacket to go along with the new look husky logo...

Nike, Susan Herbst, Ward Manuel, they don't and never will. The toupee husky could be pretty much anyone. Which is fine with Nike. They probably just pulled it out of their stock wolves/huskies anyway. For all the market babble about branding, they ignored the one thing that has been distinctive about UConn's Husky for 75 years...it is ALL WHITE!

I think it has been panned everywhere...Worst, or best I guess depending on your point of view, was a comment that said "This is almost as bad as our new conference." :)
 
I dont love the new logo but i like it and i definitely like it better than the white version thats been posted. the blue around the eyes looks terrible without the rest of the blue. if the blue was removed from around the eye and put on the brow to give the dog a scowl it could work.

I REALLY liked the new logo when I first saw it; and, quite frankly, couldn't understand any of the criticism. I looked at Penfield's version and my first reaction was, "C'mon, can't we just leave well enough alone?". BUT, I have spent the last few minutes looking at them side by side and the plain fact of the matter is that PENFIELD NAILED IT!!! :) I doubt the school or Nike will make the change; but they absolutely should. Great job Penfield!!! The nice thing is that, if they don't make the change, we still have a great freakin' logo. :D

My guess is they are trying to make this new husky logo look like a wolf on purpose. Well, guess what? There's white wolves, too!

my bro did these.. he works at espn and went to uconn in the 90's... he wasn't happy with the finished version either.
