New Husky Logo - All White Version

For all those making the point that huskies are not "all white", please explain just how many huskies are partly navy blue?

How about...

For all those making the point that huskies are not "all white", please understand that you are wrong. All-white Huskies are somewhat rare, but they certainly do exist. In fact, one could argue that in this country the most famous one is probably Jonathan, the UConn Husky.

All im trying to say is if you think of the UCONN Husky which image comes to mind?
This...

Or this...

They are both Huskies so we can stop arguing about Sammys and Malamutes or whatever else.
Up = UConn
Down= Washington and Northeastern
Penfield, you are dead right but I think we may be in the minority on this...I can't believe more people don't see this most obvious point that you have shown above.
Up = nice doggie I want to pet, or have as a pet.
Down = please don't rip my face off.

It's called using the primary colors in the logo, are we really being this obtuse at this point...

How many bears are partly blue? OH SOMEONE INFORM CAL...

And another thing...

Dos UConn have the whitest home unis you can think of? I know they went gray for a while, but UConn seems to have less piping and off colors than any other uni. No? Can you think of anything whiter? Penn State? Kentucky?

All white does it for me!! Otherwise it will take time for an adjustment. I wonder what will become of our living and breathing Jonathan? Is he at the hair dresser today?

Jonathan is at the vet as we speak about to be euthanized. Unless we get them the change to the new white version, Jonathan's a goner.....

Because it wasn't a husky. It was a Samoyed.
If you go back all the way to even the awful 1959 version it was all white. There is a reason. That was the UConn tradition. Penfield gets it. Nike, Susan Herbst, Ward Manuel, they don't and never will. The toupee husky could be pretty much anyone. Which is fine with Nike. They probably just pulled it out of their stock wolves/huskies anyway. For all the market babble about branding, they ignored the one thing that has been distinctive about UConn's Husky for 75 years...it is ALL WHITE!

Really?

It needs to be "all-white"?

Talk about nitpicking.

The real one looks a lot better than yours, IMO. I don't know where you get this illusion that all huskies are all white either.
All Huskies are not white. The point is that the UConn Husky IS! Every mascot since 1935 (Jonathan II) has been white. and that has been by design. Now it doesn't matter apparently. 75 years of tradition give way to Nike's desire to have a blue one.

I guarantee you that a minuscule amount of people outside of this message board consider the one thing about the UConn Huskies that is distinctive to be an all-white husky.

Fine, you don't think the current one looks like a Husky, ok. Repalce it with a Husky. But make it white.

My daughter's Samoyad is not happy!! He's attended some of the victory parades in Hartford, and he was treated like a rock star! He even marched in it one year, and loved the attention. This was bad news for him, and the biggest bummer is not only will he miss the parade on Sunday, and the controversy may have drawn even more attention, he will actually be spending a long weekend in the kennel due to family commitments and trips scheduled with school vacations. He does like the kennel stays, however, and will come home with his winter coat gone and he will actually be streamlined for awhile, and very white!

And I guarentee you that an even more miniscule number know that the current logo is a samoyed.

President Herbst was quoted earlier in the week as not knowing how the logo got to be a Samoyad, though even I know how it came to be, and may have even saw the actual dog back in the day.

It's the only white husky out there.

A few weeks ago, ESPN screwed up when it did bracketology, and it somehow put our old logo next to Duke's name. Fans everywhere noted it on twitter and said, "UConn isn't banned anymore!" The freakin' logo was miniscule, you could barely make it out, but people could see it was all-white. Instantly recognizable. This logo needs a split second of thought before one determines that it is the UConn husky and not other ones.

Are they really changing the costume?? That might send me on the war path haha

I actually think that's the best thing. The all-white costume got so dirty so quickly leading to an unnecessary amount of cleaning and wearing out the costume faster than it should. At times, our costumed mascot looked like it was from a thrift store it was so worn. Of course, during the big championship games and what not they unveiled a cleaner looking one...but some of those football games...yeah...that Husky saw a lot.

I don't remember where I heard it, but I am pretty sure part of the redesign was a new costume.

Only if Nike tells them to do it...

This was from a post yesterday... his info has been accurate:

The actual dog and the Jonathan mascot suit aren't owned or operated by UConn athletics and have never been intended to represent our visual image. They are important, but athletics doesn't have any sort of responsibility to match the look.

When asked who was responsible for the mascot suit - this was the reply:

I believe its Student Activities, same with the cheer squad

Like them both!

The University's mascot is "The Husky" not "The White Husky". Branding can be about consistency or about broadening the idea. Pick your choice. I'm non-discriminatory. Maybe it's time to get a black and white Jonathan or a black Jonathan or one of the myriad color variations that fit into the breed.

Or maybe we should just consider all white athletic teams. Of course no one here is arguing for such a thing. But I would bet that if outside sources heard the arguments about an all white husky, they would love to run with it to make a case against the university even if the case is baseless.

I can't believe I have to defend Nike, but you know UConn Athletics, in coordination with Licensing and Nike, did a review of our cluster-f of logos and decided to streamline everything. And I have no problem with you not liking the logo (hell, I wish it was a little more white) but this just isn't the end of the world.

And to clarify, there are currently no plans to replace the Mascot uniform or the live dog. This was only a change to the logo.

The change was drastic enough to warrant an explanation to whomever inside the AD had a say in its approval. That explanation must have included a reason the new logo wasn't based on a white dog.

I'd like to hear it. The fact that the alternate white version looks pretty damn good will hurt whatever press release is currently being penned.
