New Head Coach Criteria/Wishes

Cahill might turn out to be a great choice, but I really feel like we need a somewhat recognizable name in our next coach. We need portal players to feel like the new guy can prepare them to play on Sundays if they have that ability, and prepare them to play well if they've been stuck on the bench in their current situations...

5. Can DB actually convince you to come here and stay at least 5 years like Mora did. Staying is a cherry on top, getting 5 years from someone with a run like Mora is the best we can expect as long as we are an independent/non-P4.

Agreed…in a place that’s tough to recruit, having a household name would be a big help, You heard many a recruit talk about Mora’s history in the NFL.

It just screams compromise to me. Coach S may not be a bad option for an FCS team or one with lower expectations. We need to be reaching higher in terms of HC experience. Gordon has evolved as a coordinator but he's still honing his craft at that. Going through another learning curve is a luxury we can't afford in coaching and recruiting. It's not that he couldn't get there eventually. But eventually should not he the goal.

Because we’re not working on a shoestring budget and can get a proven winner at the FBS or FCS level where the competition and demands of the job are the same or similar and therefore a better predictor of future success.

Because we don’t need to get a retread necessarily.

Because AD DB’s first true hire (Mora) in FB was a great success

In other words, let them do their jobs. He also needs to know a little bit about clock management because so many coaches are so bad at that when all it takes is a little bit of study. So maybe your take sounds a little bit extreme but it wouldn't shock me if somebody does try something like that in the near future. With the right staff it could just pan. I just don't think it'll be us that jumps in first. I don't think our AD operates like that.

I agree with your thoughts. But, someone has to go 1st and my idea is that Joe is the guy to make it work. I think it is called GenZ, the young ones today. They think differently than older folks. I coached for 40 years and the difference in todays athletes is incredible, along with the parachute parents. It is difficult to find High School coaches because of how they are treated. I started coaching in 1962 and even when losing, which I did often, parents would come over and say nice try coach. Today, not happening....So, I will let my idea of Joe being the head Coach or at least the QB coach go, but I guarantee in the not to distance future a brave AD will hire young and that will start the ball rolling. Athletes are less and less likely to respond to retreads and and/or sit the Bench. Yes, they are jumping for the $$$$$$, but there are allot of Joes and Bells out there, and many 3 start athletes looking for something different. here's my real objection to sammis. He may, in his tenure, learned how to do things. I'd wonder about him as a recruiter. That being said, can he find a good replacement for himself.

I'm convinced the head football coach is more a GM than ever and that means the real X's and O's coaches are your coordinators. Gone are the days of the head college coach calling the plays.

I wish Benedict all the luck finding a new coach. I can't imagine this is easy

yeah, but that may not be true of every coach's wife... remains to be seen. if we hire somebody like him will he bolt after two good years? Probably. Like mora, if that's the way it will be then I'm fine with that.

These jobs have become very complex and the head coach will need to be able to work the press, the in state politicians, the upper admins at the school, the trustees and be able to engage the fan base.

This is all in addition to being able to run a top level program in an exceptionally dynamic environment at a place where there isn't a lot of history or image to sell.

It can be done, but the right guy will be able to find quality assistants and the school will need to be able to fund the staff in addition to (new to the equation) revenue sharing.

One area where I had been concluded Mora was the limited number of players who developed through the system and the corresponding reliance on the transfer portal. Yes, the portal can help fill a number of holes but we cannot expect to sustain much of anything if the number of starters new to the program continued to be as high as it had been the past couple of seasons. At some point the bulk of the roster will have to be players who have been two, three, fours years with the school and the bulk of the starters will need to be guys who will end up being multi-year starters here, more often than not with an additional season having seen the field in spot play as a backup.

No one but the elite have the opportunity to develop guys. The 4 schools in 4 years is becoming the norm for everyone else.

If that's what the bulk of our starting lineups will look like going forward we can give up on ever having a winning record while facing a quality schedule.

Exactly. Here is reality. If you are successful at UConn you will be offered a job somewhere else. Mora was successful by any rational measure. Beyond successful. If the next guy goes 9-3, 9-3 he will be offered another job too.

We’ve played that card.
Now it’s whatever is the best coach we can get that:
A) understands, accepts, and has the right experience to work with UConn’s Indy status
B) can bring immediate credibility to recruits
C) can see what made Mora successful and build on that as opposed to tear down and rebuild
D) east coast/northeast ties
E) big enough name that says UConn is serious about football
