New Head Coach Criteria/Wishes

We’re going to have a coach soon and we’re going to be happy about it. The list of possibilities is pretty good and AD Dave knows what to look for. I’m very confident about this hire and I’m excited about it. For once I feel confident that we are about to upgrade. Jim Mora did what he could do here. Now we need a football guy with an eye for talent. Jim Mora showed it’s “doable”.

Well our AD, is one for two on good hires, so it's a coin toss as to where this will go.

How about David Shaw, has nfl and and college experience. Has a ton of connections, has college HC experience, is currently the passing game coordinator for the Lions so the UConn head coaching job is certainly a step up. Has a proven track record of good offenses, has experience as an nfl executive he would do good in the portal. He’s only 53 btw.

I would give him a call as the worst that can happen (he says no) is the same outcome as not asking.

I highly doubt he's interested in being a college head coach as i imagine Stanford would give almost anything to get him to return yet they are hiring someone else.

There is really one thing we need in the next coach we hire and that’s NFL coaching experience. I mean real coaching experience, not an assistant line coach or any obscure thing like that. They to have connections with players in the league and connections to others within it.

Let’s be real. This is a tough gig and you aren’t getting transfers to come here for the stadium/campus atmosphere, national exposure, or chance to win a championship. So why was Mora so successful? Players loved him and knew he had the knowledge of what it took to play in the NFL. He still was connected to the game and knew what his kids needed. How many transfers said that Mora’s NFL experience was a big reason they came?

If we hire a coach without previous success as a college head coach, we need someone who has previous experience at a good level in the NFL. It’s the only angle we can play and why we were able to get the players we did.
Jon Gruden would take this program to the next level.

As a long time Raiders fan having already gone through 2 rounds of Gruden, I'll pass. I've still not forgiven him for leaving the team then beating them the next year in the Super Bowl.😭

Frank Reich? Interim Stanford coach did not get the job. East coast guy, same age as Mora.

.-.
Wasn’t he traded? I don’t remember leaving the Raiders being his choice.
Shhh, facts don't need to get in the way of a grudge. 😉 Yes he was traded, but I didn't like it at the time. Raiders ownership has given me quite the bitter pills to swallow over the years, that I'm also a Mets fan adds to that misery.

Here are my ideas for the head coaching search:

Former NFL coaches:
Jon Gruden: Resurrect his career?
Brian Daboll: Resurrect his career?

Former FBS coaches:
Pat Fitzgerald: Resurrect his career?

Current FBS Head Coaches:
Bob Chesney - JMU: Probably not happening
Jason Candle - Toledo: Hasn't left yet, so maybe
Charles Huff - Southern Miss: Lots of FBS assistant coach experience. Did well at Marshall and turned around Southern Miss on year 1. Only 42 and from Maryland.
Jason Eck - New Mexico: Won at Idaho and turned around New Mexico in year 1.

FCS Coaches:
Kevin Cahill - Lehigh: Turned around Lehigh. Coached at Yale and Maine. From New York and played at Springfield.
Andrew Aurich - Harvard: Played at Princeton. Was at Rutgers for 6 years, 1 year at Tampa Bay. 17-3 at Harvard. 42 years old.

FBS Assistants:
Gordon Sammis - OC UConn: Great OC!
Cory Hetherman - DC Miami: Grew up in Massachusetts. Coached at many New England schools.
Collin Klein - OC Texas A&M: Probably a long shot, but ready for his first head coaching job.
Shannon Dawson - OC Miami: Southern ties, but coached at WVU for 4 years.
Brian Hartline - OC Ohio St." Ready for a head coaching job, but has only coached at Ohio St.
Ra-Shaad Samples - AHC Oregon: Top recruiter. Strong Texas ties, so probably not a good fit.
Will Stein - OC Oregon: Played QB at Louisville and played against UConn. Probably a long shot.
Andy Kotelnicki - OC Penn St.: Will need a new job and Probably wants a head coaching job. Could bring some Penn St. players with him.
Glenn Schumann - DC Georgia: Experience at Alabama and Georgia. Ready for his first head coaching job. Strong southern ties so probably a long shot.

I’m sorry to all you Sammis lovers but if he ends up our next HC, it’s not a good sign for this program. To me that shows that they couldn’t get any candidate to take this job. It would be a completely uninspiring hire for the fans and I’m sure it would do next to nothing for keeping or getting players. Seems like a nice job and did ok as an OC but I’d be very concerned if we ended up with him as our HC. We’ve also not seen him without having Bell and Edwards in his offense so like Brock, we don’t know if he’s good or if he has good players that make him look good. We found out this year that Brock had great players last year that made him look good because this year he was exposed.

What you get with Sammis is a proven OC who put up big numbers and that is attractive to QBs, WRs, TEs, and RBs (and other schools). That is most of the recruiting battle, so I would be willing to give him a chance. That said, Dave B. is much closer to Sammis and he may have a different opinion of his capabilities.

Ideally, I would love to hire an experienced coach who keeps Sammis as the OC.

Patricia is not a 'people person'. Stubborn & arrogant.
Sounds perfect!
From NY and spent entire career in the Northeast or mid-west so he won't puss out about the location
51 years old is perfect
Tons of NFL experience which JM used to sell the program
Ohio State is a factory though so he could be very successful there and then land a much bigger job

Take away an NFL level QB and wide I guarantee he’d be roasted alive here.
