New Hampshire post game thread

Slow start but good lord are we explosive.

Biggest takeaway from the game, Hurley wasn't blowing smoke. Ross is really damn good. We knew he had the athleticism and the open three point shot but he looked s bit like Bambi on ice when we last saw him, he seems to have skyrocketed in the figuring it out department. He doesn't have it all figured out yet but you can see he's getting pretty close. He was all over the place and did some NBA type things out there.

We've never had this kind of wing talent, it's just an embarrassment of riches. McNeeley was just okay on offense tonight but I thought he was great on defense. Alex is Alex, he's one of the best players in the country.

No negatives for me other than Samson and the fouls. He's too good to keep fouling. It looks like it will take some time for Mahaney and Jaylin to figure out things offensively but it's to be expected. We've never had this depth of talent, Hurley might have to use it all and expand the rotation from the past two years. We will wear teams out.

  1. That officiating made the game nearly unwatchable for stretches. Just zero flow.
  2. The Jayden Ross hype is real. Would love to see him gamble a bit less on D but really nitpicking there. Played a great game and was just on a different level athletically than everyone else on the court. Incredible jump from last year.
  3. Diarra and Mahaney had some solid stretches in the second half but both were rough to watch in the first half. This team is going to need more consistency from them.
  4. Reed with another nice game, Johnson with more truly head-scratching fouls. I’m still hopeful the staff can get through to him but I think the most likely scenario is he ends up playing a similar role to last year due to the foul issues.
  5. Nowell and Abraham continue to look like big pieces for the future.
  6. Loved that when McNeeley was struggling to get great looks, he started taking it to the hoop and was still crashing the glass hard. Wild that he’s a Freshman in his second game.
  7. Karaban is a stud. Not much else to say there.

Also Reed is starting sooner or later, Johnson isn't gonna cut it.

This is a blessing in disguise. Reed is getting lots of playing time. This is accelerating his learning curve. Good for us.

Johnson has stretches when he looks awesome, his screening, his passing, his denials on defense, his blocks. The kid is a major stud. When he is "on" the team looks fantastic. Not worried about the fouling --yet.

Missed the game. First in a long time. But it seems we have crazy depth as expected but probably not as good a fist five as the last two years. I am very interested to see what Dan does with that. Our style will need to change some. DVR time in the morning.

Second bad game for Aiden. One more and it’s a real worry. He’s getting outclassed by mediocre mid major guards. Garbage time points aren’t gonna cut it. I’m rooting for him to figure it out.
Not at all worried. It's a huge adjustment from the way he played at St. Mary's and what Hurley wants from him in the UConn offense. There's a reason Hurley is starting him, I think he expects the growing pains and knows it's well worth it.

It won't matter, he can't stay on the court. He'll end up in the energizer backup role like Diarra before long. He doesn't have many more cupcake games to prove he deserves it over Reed. We all see where this is going.

I don’t think Mahaney and Johnson defend well enough to start. I also think their skillsets are better off the bench. Mahaney feels like a microwave scorer as a 6th man and Johnson’s a fouling machine but his athleticism and pace is better served as a backup big going against fatigued starters or backups.

I have to say I was a bit worried about our defense coming into this season. We actually have 3-4 elite defenders in Diarra, Ross, McNeeley and Karaban. Karaban is so much better defensively than he was when he got here. Is he leading the nation in blocks after 2 games? If not he’s close. I thought Diarra was going to be our best on the ball defender, but if Ross brings that intensity and defense every night he’s going to be even more trouble for teams than Diarra. Our defense at the center position is still a big question mark.
