Huge Plus for Autumn based on what her father stated, she knows the UConn offense. Now if she can get the passes to the Right Player at the Right Time. Don't anticipate Autumn will get much playing time, but if she's able to Run Geno's offense when she plays, maybe the offense won't look so bad during blowouts.

Great story about Autumn....the kid is tough as nails and will definitely be a fan favorite!

They should try and boost her confidence, not destroy it. If I’m the coach, I’m trying to put her in situations that she can win and be successful. But Geno has a system were he tears the freshmen down, then Builds them up. The same way they do in the military boot camps.

Try to boost a walk-on's confidence?

Just love when a new season comes. ;)

Any walkons named Winter, Summer. Heck, even Spring??
Well, Mir has Springs, and Summer Hempill is a star at Buffalo. We could have a game against Buffalo announced by Christy Winters-Scott.

How does a HS Player from Louisiana end up as a walk-on for UConn? According to articles Autumn had received Scholarship Offers from Other Schools. Apparently, Autumn and her family chose to come to UConn for College with the aspiration that Geno and the Coaching Staff would give her an opportunity to walk-on. An expensive proposition as she's probably paying Out-of-State tuition.

Wb, you can be sure that she was picked because she is the type of player Geno wants on the team and that down the line, and not to far down, she will be given a scholarship. I'm not sure the Scholarship offers came from any "top twenty" type of schools. I believe a couple came from the Ivy League and the others from affiliates of some larger schools such as LSU.

Geno is old school, and hasn't changed much. The boot camps however have become more like summer camps, they aren't allowed to do the stuff that they did before early 1990's. One of the reasons why I decided to retire instead of staying another four year just to get Sergeant Major was I got tired of the babysitting and politics.

Most of that does not match up with my memory. I don't recall AEH and Gordon thinking or saying they though they deserved more playing time. You may having been thinking of Sadie Edwards who did think she deserved more time and request a meeting with the coaches to discuss this prior to transferring. AEH was asked to leave the program because she repeatedly did not do what was asked of her per Geno. What is unclear was if that had anything to with on court basketball play. Number 1 rule at UCONN is be a good teammate and I don't recall AEH ever being in violation of that rule. Mikayla Coombs never got better at UCONN. She came in with a god set of tools and was expected to be a contributor since UCONN desperately needed a third guard to be part of the rotation. She started off a poor shooter, then became a reluctant shooter, and eventually because of those two things unable to help the team.
Coombs never put the work in to work qith a specialist and fix her shot. She had some great skills but without a threat to score, she was a liability in a motion offense.

Autumn got to UConn because Geno offered Preferred Walk-On which Guaranteed Autumn a Roster Slot and her father was willing to pay the tuition for her freshmen year. Yes, Geno and Chris must see something in Autumn that warrants her being on the team prior to practice starting. Huge Gamble for Autumn and also give credit to her father for willing to do what was necessary for Autumn to go after her dream.

I'm not worried for her financially. She obviously is really smart so I'm sure there are some academic scholarships that have come her way. I'm not sure she'll ever get a sports scholarship since the roster is going to get pretty big over the next few years.

Despite living in Lafayette, Louisiana – around 1,350 miles and an entire world away from Storrs – the Chassions were diehard UConn women’s basketball fans. Tehmi said he and Autumn watch the Huskies “24 hours a day."

I like these guys. Sounds like they would fit right in here on the Boneyard.

That incoming recruiting class of 4 starting for 2016/2017, never made it to playing all 4 years at UCONN, between transfers and 1 player leaving early for the WNBA, that class did not really fulfill the expectations that Geno and UCONN had for those 4 players on the program. The 3 transfers have had "Mild" success at those programs that they transferred to (with AEH during her Sophomore Year at MSSU having the most), and of course Megan Walker's 3 years at UCOON, with her Sophomore and Junior years being the most impactful, were the 2 of the 4 that stand out). BUT, not what was truly expected from those 4 individuals.

I remember a scene from one of the "Geno Auriemma Show" episodes in which Lawlor was in the middle of a huddle, on a knee, her teammates surrounding her, as she spoke to them. There are lots of ways to contribute to the UConn women's basketball program.
Amen!

The roster was roughly the same size when Lawlor and Pulido walked on at the start of 2013-14 season (9 then & 10 now). Lawlor and Pulido both earned a scholarship 1 year later when UCONN had added 4 Freshman (Sadie, Courtney, Gabby & Kia) + Transfer Natalie. So I don't think it is the roster size or strictly basketball ability that will determine if and when Autum gets an athletic scholarship. It will be how hard she works.

Agree that Coombs shot held her back. But her mechanics were so bad I’m not sure her shooting could be fixed. By the time a player gets to college, it may be possible to make a minor tweak or two to their shooting motion. Coombs required a complete makeover.

Stamford, you're right. Fans should not get over excited about our new addition. She's a "walk-on". She's not the second coming of Maya Moore or Diana Taurasi. She's a very good player from a small private parochial school in Louisiana, that leaped at the opportunity to be a part of this program, nothing more. There's a place for her here, and we're glad to have her. End of story.

We know when to get "excited". Let she who's name shall not be mentioned (or Kiki Iriafen) verbal to UConn. THEN you'll see some real excitement burst out on this board!!! We get real giddy around here when we get the #1 player in her class to commit to us. If THAT happens, I'll buy the first round for everyone..........drinks on 'ol Carnac. :D

OD, as usual, I think you assessed Coombs situation accurately. I completely agree with your take. She lost her shot and her confidence. I like her, I wish her all the luck and good fortune in the world. Her transfer to Georgia was best for her and UConn.

My impression and just my impression.... was that AEH and Gordon thought they deserved more playing time and did not have the goods to back up what they thought they could do. If I recall correctly AEH was not really a "team" player and did what she wanted to do and not what was asked of her... Coombs was the one that really confused me. Did she transfer for her senior year? She had shown improvement.... but then she left.

ATHENS, Ga. — Mikayla Coombs, a 2017 McDonald's All-American and the state of Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year, will transfer from the University of Connecticut and join the Georgia Lady Bulldog basketball program, head coach Joni Taylor announced.

Coombs played two seasons at UConn and will have two years of eligibility remaining at Georgia.
