I really think Newton needs to be more assertive. He looks disinterested to me. No fire. I hope Wednesday there are some changes in lineup and offense. Very predictable and just look weak.
He makes lackadaisical passes. Once we were up by 17 he was in coast mode. Really has no sense of urgency and killer instinct. He is not alone.

People love the double bigs, twin towers....

you don’t even have to run anything other than a pick and roll for Clingan. He’s there for defense
I like that over post ups. I think he can be a problem as a rim runner. You can just lob it to him.

People seem to think post ups are good fundamental offense. Not really. It is just isolation 1-on-1 play. The beauty of that iso is if the guy is really good, it draws a double team.

That offensive player, however, has to make the right decision to make the offense work.

If Hurley is primarily concerned about defense start SJ over AK and HD over TN. The 1 and the 4 are 2 spots that teams exploit us. The problem is that the spacing and overall offense would be pretty crappy.

How is it possible, that he still didn’t do anything different? Didn’t even take a timeout to stop a 9-0 run

There is nothing to criticize on coaching this game. Lid on the hoop on good looks to start the game was the difference. Good switchup on different D’s, the press caused fits. Overall it was probably one of the best coached games of the season, he can’t hit those first 9 misses for them.

Dead serious. Going to “it’s the coaching” after every loss doesn’t make you smart. You’re proof.
Same result every game for the last 5 years and your content. Almost at the bottom of a subpar big east. You sound like a Cuse fan. At least we have acc money!

It's mid January and it's clear we do not have a steady effective floor leader at point guard. Newton, Diarra, Allyene, Jackson, and Calcaterra, have all had minutes there and none of them have the needed point guard skills. They each bring something to the table but not as 30+ minutes a game point guards. Unless one of them steps up there game quickly this team will be exposed and other teams will continue to take advantage of it. And as others have said, there's no shortage of other things to improve upon with this team. Long time fan, and lurker here, and I will remain hopeful that they can turn things around.
If R.J. Cole had one additional year eligibility he would haven been the cure to this teams current point guard woes. If he were here on this roster, I bet this team is 20-2 right now.....not 16-6.

Hard truth - Jackson needs to come off bench. He is a “spice“ that can come off bench. Sanago should split minutes with Johnson and Clingan. And Newton should start at point.

What we can’t have is Hurley starting Jackson and have him go 0-7 to start a game against the 13th ranked team in the country and Sanogo get schooled on the boards and dissapear on offense for long stretches.

Mix it up, Dan!

Last night was obviously a tail of two halves. First half at the start no ball movement, stagnant offensive that we have seen of late. A lot of that had to do with Jackson’s man sagging way off. 2nd half the ball moved much faster and everyone got better shots. A lot more flow. Even with Jackson on the floor.

I do agree bring Jackson off the bench to be the defensive specialist he believes he is.

Who do you start though? Alleyne? Joey isn’t doing it for me anymore

What we are seeing with Jackson now, is similar to Alterique a few years ago. It's clear Hurley personally liked them both and seemed to put that above holding them accountable for their atrocious play.

I'm sure we are going to see tons of articles about how "Jackson has grown so much in his 4 years as a Husky" in the offseason just like we did with Gilbert and a narrative of a "it's more than basketball blah blah blah" CC: Hartford Courant.

Which of course is true...but I watch basketball hoping my team wins.

Yeah, bring Clingan in at the 5 and move Karaban to the 3.

Who does he replace them with who can make a difference or who has made a difference?

Use to be Joey for instant offense, but that has instantly disappeared.

Maybe Clingan, but recently his offense has not been as prolific as it had been. He can block and alter shots, but even he has not always stopped the drivers lately.

Kind of a crazy idea, but worth a shot. Start Diarra at PG, we'll have to live with his mistakes, but he's more willing to attack the basket. This lets Newton play off the ball and do his thing, and might give Hawkins more room to do his thing. Put AJ at the 4 and let him clean up around the basket, rebound and start the break. This will cut into Alex's minutes, but something has to give, he'll still get his minutes depending on matchups and who has the hot hand. At this point AJ is just not effective on the perimeter.

Cole did have another year of eligibility. He chose to play professionally rather than return to UConn.

Clignan wouldn’t be in for his offense. He is pretty good at pick and roll, but he’s be in to give us rim protection and rebounding

That last line belongs in the boneyard hall of fame.
