I agree. My guess is that there will be no penalties for the 2012 season so that they d0 not harm the current players (who have little time at this point to transfer). But I would suspect you will see a punishment of 10-15 scholarship reduction for the next 6-8 years, a bowl ban for the next 5-8 years, and a TV ban for the next 3-5 years. And they will allow all current players to transfer with no penalty after this year (which will turn Happy Valley into a free agent feeding frenzie for the players over the next 8 months). That is my official guess.
The difference with USC and Michigan is they were not barred from playing for a full season, so they could continue playing, practicing, and being seen by professional scouts. If they shut PSU down for this year, that shuts the players down for a year which is incredibly detrimental to their careers. It will be interesting to see how they plan to pull that off. NCAA punishments nearly always affect the current players.
There are plenty of examples outside of UConn, including USC football getting a 2 year bowl ban in 2010 for the Reggie Bush related violations or Michigan basketball getting banned from the postseason in 2002-3 for stuff that Chris Webber and others did in the 90s.
I don't know how they'll avoid punishing the current PSU team.
that's the only way they could impose a season ban. if they ban the program for this year, they could face lawsuits from current players since they would be forced not to play for a year through no fault of their own, as well as they'd be denying many players an opportunity to pursue a career, which would be easily provable in court. plus the 12 opponents for PSU this year would lose revenue from scheduled games. They could just have all the bans and whatnot go into effect for next season. That would cripple recruiting immediately but would allow this team's players to have one more season together. That way the Seniors can finish their careers and everyone else can have time to pick out their best landing spot for the future.
Good point. The current players should not take a hit for this garbage and this is the only way that its fair to them. The NCAA should obviously grant a waiver to play right away for any kid that wants to transfer. If any bowl ban goes into effect this year, its too late in the game for somebody to transfer. They could just have all the bans and whatnot go into effect for next season. but then people are pi$$ing and moaning about how these kids grew up dreaming to play for PSU so if they "have" to transfer, it hurts them none the less. gimme a break.Good point.
