Exactly bro! Kids buried on depth charts at Big Time programs... That should be our target... Going the D2 route , at this phase of our rebuild, terrible idea... If we were a more stable football team, and were a few players off (unfortunately, we're wayyyy more than that off) it would've probably worked out better, especially for a kid like Ardell Brown (who showed the flashes you want to see in an impact player)....Kids looking for PT who were perhaps buried on depth charts at big time programs like ND maybe our ticket. Quite franky, even though he was knicked up every game it seemed, Morgan provided better LB play all year than anyone we've had the last 2 years. He wasn't great but he was certainly serviceable. Ardell Brown looked decent but was hobbled all year.
IF we don't then we're gonna be disappointed next year (again)... It's inexusable for us not to work this angle as hard as we can.. all the while, recruiting for the future (2 to 3 years down the road)..You simply have to work this angle just as hard as your HS recruiting. Illinois ... made a big jump & 75% of the kids that are memorable to me on that playing field for them were GRTransfers or Transfers.
You can see some schools positioning themselves for the Portal. How? Their recruiting classes seem smaller than expected for this time of year. For example, SMU has 11 commits and Houston has 8 commits. Last year, SMU took in 16 transfers and Houston took in 12. It also seems like P5 kids from the Dallas and Houston area look to go home when they are transferring.
SMU and Sonny Dykes seem to be taking full advantage of transfers and JUCOs. It looks like they have 24 transfers and 10 JUCOs on the roster which helps explain their success this year. Transfers/JUCOs make up 5 offensive starters and 2 backups, 6 defensive starters and 6 backups, and the starting kicker, kick off specialist, and punter.thats a very good insight

The SMU strategy would not fly at UConn, but we should take more than we currently do.
Been waiting for this one... Edsall made a big push for Blackshear the first time around a couple years ago. This evening he and Corey have jumped on the new opportunity now that he is in the portal. I think Blackshear is a great player stuck on a an over powered roster.
Didn't know if I should've posted this inquiry in the transfer portal post or 2020 recruiting thread so I just decided on the transfer one.
@huskymedic - it seems we might be going after juco (Butler CC) OL Adam Sheriff... Allen and Giufre are following him they Twitter. Looks like he's following back. Do you know if we've offered him? Lord knows we need some serious OL help with the recent departures.
Let's face it, we are not getting kids with a bunch of fbs offers out of HS. A kid like Morgan wasn't sniffing the field at ND. Here was the best LB we had.The idea of going after P5 guys buried on the depth chart is a good one. A selling point that no one else in the AAC could say is "come here and and play 5 games against P5 opponents". Can any non P5 team say that? As I've said before, UCONN has a chance to be something special. That said, I've been an optimist who refuses to learn his lesson!

I disagree with your analysis. There will be way more kids in the portal than available FBS scholarships. Look at last year's portal and you will see plenty of 4*s and 3*s out of high school that did not find a landing spot last year. UConn's biggest problem is the desire to take either transfers or Grad transfers. A kid like DJ who graduated from Notre Dame is not an issue.I think I agree with your overall premise, although DJ had a lot of offers. Ultimately, We need to focus on kids like him who just want the opp to play and local kids who simply want to come home and play in front of friends and family.
No obvious UConn connection...but topical given proximity
That is what I mean. A kid with a ton offers that got recruited over with other kids who had a ton of offers. He came here and provided the best LB play of anyone on our roster the last 2 years.I think I agree with your overall premise, although DJ had a lot of offers. Ultimately, We need to focus on kids like him who just want the opp to play and local kids who simply want to come home and play in front of friends and family.
