Always good for tailgating.

No utensils, hand held and scalable depending on the size of your crowd.

For me, I have to go with the Cuban sandwich. Slow roasted pork, ham, cheese, pickle, deli mustard, & a crunchy baguette toasted as a panini.

Close second is a fried oyster po boy. Unfortunately lots of places screw up the oysters.

If I'm travelling and I have to hit a chain shop, it's Jimmy John's

When done correctly, I always love a Reuben. Corned beef or pastrami (or both!), can't go wrong.

Subway is doing 'Buy One Get One' sandwiches today to celebrate the holiday. I don't often go for Subway but might have to take advantage of the deal. I'll get turkey, salami, pepperoni with lettuce, pickles, jalepenos, provolone, a little oil and vinegar...

I'm starting to make myself hungry, I never should have clicked on this thread.

Much prefer DiBellas to Subway. Much prefer anything to Subway, come to think of it. :)

Cubans and Reubens... Two of my favorites. We picked up cheesesteaks from DiBellas for the Nova tailgate... Easy and delicious.

DiBella's is straight garbage. Not a fan at all.

For all those heading to NOLA this weekend, the fried oyster po-boys are nothing short of spectacular. I'm a big fan of Felix's in the FQ (right across the street from Acme but little to no line). Fried oysters, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and a homemade remoulaide. Throw a little lemon and Tabasco and you have yourself the world's greatest sammich.

I'll be hitting up Nardellis today. Can't wait. I don't mind Subway if I'm in a rush but if I can choose its Nardellis for me.

I love me a good sandwich!

I'm also found of a good turkey bacon avocado club sandwich on sourdough. Throw in some lettuce and good tomatoes and there isn't any need for mustard, mayo, etc.

If you love you a good sandwich, how does Subway even come remotely close to crossing the back of your mind? In terms of pizza, It's like saying that you'll be hitting up Frank Pepe (NH), but in a pinch, you don't mind Little Caesars. It's night and day, and Subway isn't the latter.

I wasn't saying Subway fit the bill just saying that if I'm in a rush or not in an area with sandwich shops I know, I'll quickly run into Subway and get a sandwich. I'm not a sandwich snob like you seem to be I guess

I think it's their bread that I detest. It's a buttery, soft crust with just way too much dough. It kills and overpowers the sandwich. I like a bread with a nice crunchy crust with a soft doughy inside.

Stating that Subway is truly awful is not being a sandwich snob. It's stating a fact well supported opinion. Maybe it's because I prefer my grinders with the requisite amount of what I actually ordered, not 2/3 shredded iceberg lettuce with a single slice of roast beef, or a Meatball grinder with more than 4 Swedish-style sized balls of unseasoned 73% lean ground beef. One thing Subway has going for it is the smell of the cooking bread.

I can count the positive experiences at Subway on one hand. They all involve copious amounts of beer, UConn, early mornings, and Ted's/D.P. Dough not taking any more orders.

A 2 A.M. cold cut combo loaded is a solid sandwich. At 2 P.M. the value plummets.

I actually like their bread... But more in relation to the sad airy engineered dough puffs at Subway. Totally with you on nice crunchy crust / soft inside taking the bread power rankings.

Apparently the Boneyard is too good for a free sandwich. I worked at a deli for 5 years and think Subway is on par with fast food, but a free sandwich can't be that bad...

So my dinner plans changed today thanks to this thread.

Everyone agree that no good sandwich contains mayonnaise or micacle whip, right?

You can have yellow mustard, brown/deli mustard, Dijon, etc but none of that goop.

I disagree...slightly..
Best sandwich I have had....and believe me...I eat a lot of sandwiches....
Was a day after Thanksgiving Sandwich that contained a nice crusted roll (soft inside), homemade cranberry mayo, stuffing and turkey.

Miracle Whip is disgusting.

I like to think of myself as a professional sandwich maker. I make sandwiches almost every day for lunch. The ideal sandwich is:

100% toasted whole wheat bread
Spicy dijon mustard
Lettuce
Tomato
Sliced kosher dill pickles (NONE OF THAT BREAD AND BUTTER MADNESS)
Copious amounts of turkey

I've been experimenting with sliced onions and not sure how I feel about it. I love onions but they might be too much.

I think about sandwiches a lot.

.-.
Ok screw it....

Need a recommendation on a sub/grinder/hoagie/hero/sammich shop in the Manchester/East Hartford/ South Windsor area for tonight.
I know a few...just looking for more options.

LMAO....outstanding post.
Question though...are you making these fresh or in the morning for lunch? I ask because the toasted bread would be all soggy if made ahead...no?

I've determined over the last year that if you need to go raw, sliced red onion is the way to go. If Sautéed? Vidalia.

Subway: read the small print. They only offer a buy-one-get-0ne-free for footlongs. Two feet of sammy is way too much for me for lunch, no matter how much of a glutton I may be. Subway: Next year, do the 6-inch offer.

I actually work 4 blocks from my apartment so I walk home and make it. At my old job I actually just kept everything in the fridge at work and we had a toaster so I could make it there. People thought I was insane but I don't mess around when it comes to sandwiches.

Interesting. I may try red onions, I've been using white. I don't generally have time to sautee onions for lunch, heh.

Pastrami on Wry in Manchester (East Center St) is one of my favorite places to get a sandwich. Owned by the same guy who runs Catsup & Mustard on Main St and Chops & Catch on Hartford Rd, definitely worth checking out all of the above!

Yeah... Cory went to school with the wife and bro in law.
We usually hit up PoW for breffast once in awhile. I ma in the small minority when it comes to C&M though. Not a fan. They have messed up my burger every time I have gone (10 or so times).

Horrible mistake I just made.

Was thinking ahead to my pending trip to Philly for the UConn/Temple game on the 28th. In scoping out some stuff, I came across the sites for Pat's and for Geno's.
I may die in Philly from food consumption.
Now....naturally I want cheese steak for dinner.

Pat's and Geno's are ok but Tony Lukes has been our go to when we go to games @Temple. That said I think my favorite sandwich in Philly might be the Pork Sandwich at DiNic's in Reading Terminal Market. It was rated as the #1 sandwich in the US by travel channel.

Locally in CT
Wallingford area- Rosa's and Little Italy both had great grinders
Salem/Colchester- Salem Prime Cuts and Westchester Market are both really good

Good choice on the bread. Too many sub places only offer white bread. White bread sucks. I actually prefer pita's You can taste the inside ingredients more with out the bread dampening the flavor.
