can someone refresh me on why that trade was made? Was it a salary dump?

Whaler management, at the time, pointed the finger at the lack of playoff success and claimed the franchise needed to go in a different direction.

If you ask me, this was all part of EJ's evil plot to trade one of the best Centers in NHL history (along with a top, physical defenseman) to the roster that he would eventually end up coaching to pad his W/L coaching stats. There are no shortage of conspiracy theories for the average Connecticut sports fan and this is one of mine. :)

I used to crave watching College Football and Basketball on TV and in person as a 12 year ST holder for UCONN football. Now I have found that I am not interested in watching it on TV. I've got the time but not the desire since I am retired now just a little over 3 years. This CR with UCONN relegated to the back of the bus by the powers that be has done it for me. MONEY, GREED, MONEY and More GREED to pay those coaches and administrators to keep them from moving on. $king Treadmill that will not slow down. The old Glory Days of the Big East are long gone to the point were UCONN has fallen into a deep chasm where they might not be able to get out. It sucks big time. Having a hard time deciding if I should renew my 2 ST for football.
Just reading the negative banter on the BY or in the Courant doesn't help either. I looked forward to the signing day get together. It is amazing how just a couple of people could throw the whole University into such a quagmire. Depressing!!! Thank God that spring is just around the corner with days getting noticeably longer. Excuse me for the rant but at my age I hope to be around long enough to be able to see the HUSKIES scale the walls of this chasm. Some P5 conference has to throw a lifeline.

Amen brother, amen.

If you think the trade was bad from a fan's standpoint. Imagine being Jeff Parker. Ended his career instantly.

Personally I'm not sure college athletics as we know it is even around in 10 years.

Poor guy. Wasn't he concussed on his first shift at the old Cap Centre? The NHL has since wisely put up cushioning along the glass because of hits like the one that ended his career.

I stopped subscribing in the early 1990s when they supported the CT Income Tax which has ruined this state. That was then participated in the Big Lie - it was only going to be a few percent to smooth out cash flow...ha..look at it now. I read a blog article or two when they are linked here.

i don't think Cullen has gotten up from the ice yet. i'll never forget that playoff series when he looked he was a high school kid skating against NHLer's

when Jacobs writes hockey, i usually would read. In his attempts to stir up the pot to be relevant on the CT sports scene, he has become impossible to read

All of the UConn football analysis I need comes from "The View from Section 241," and I get all of my recruiting news from the venerable Dynasty, Huskymedic, 3uconn, and Husky99 (I apologize to the others whose tireless efforts I'm forgetting). No need for the Courant.

Before I registered on the Boneyard, courant.com would be the first site I read every morning, then Mr. Connor developed a chapped backside - presumably over the calls for former "Coach" Pasqualoni's job by those who help fund his salary - and discontinued his Monday Morning chat sessions (not that they were productive in the first place. Every answer used to be "I'll ask," or "I'll look into it."), while the site as a whole began only accepting facebook comments. Since then, this site is the best source of UConn sports news and recaps.

Interesting cocktail party trivia if you're at a bizarre cocktail party where only Boneyarders are present:

The Boneyard actually started on the Courant website.

Now that would be bizarre and 'off the hook' - but everyone MUST wear their BY handle and avatar while attending the BY Cocktail party.

Could anyone imagine Fishy and Jeff Jacobs in a room together?

a little off topic - fathers work had season tickets - including the year the roof collapsed, I believe the rest of the home games were in Springfield MA but we didnt go there.

Favortie game EVER - They played Edmonton Oilers in their glory days - think they beat the Oilers 11-0?? Day game. Granted I believe Gretzky/Kurri/Fuhr were NOT playing...

To ALL of the Basketball posters who want UConn football to go away answer me this..... What proof/guarantee do you have that UConn dropping football would lead to the big east begging for UConn to join? Sounds like the bbal board is living on a prayer

This is spot on.

I was at a cocktail party like that when I wrote the op. Assuming one person drinking alone is a 'party'.
Nope - My other used to say 'No parties' when they would go away.
I asked, whats your definition of a party.
Answer: More than two people have fun.

First, no one on the basketball board is advocating that.

It's basically Nelson posting 23,000 times about it.

There's always a chance that the Big Eat would want UConn back, but honestly, I can see Providence and St. John's and the like taking a Boston College/Syracuse-like approach. Why would they want UConn running around kicking over all their furniture again?

Actually, my argument is that almost anything is an upgrade over the AAC. By "almost anything", I mean anything short of the Sun Belt for all sports or the MAC for basketball. Big East/Independent. A10/Independent, A10 or Big East/MAC, spinning off Temple, Cincinnati, whoever, whoever, and forming a new league, whatever. I have a pretty open mind as long as it isn't staying in a southern mid-major.

My point about football is that the "stay in the AAC" folks like Whaler are hastening football's demise.

The basketball board is falling apart yes. We got people saying the team runs a brothel the night before games to the Big East is a better football conference than the AAC. And don't even look at the women's board, they're still stuck in 2004...

All those slashes are supposed to indicate combinations of bball in one conference, football in another right? The MAC wouldn't let UMass park their football in A10 and play football in the MAC. All in or out. So the question should be should UConn join the MAC, downgrade to the CAA in all sports, or drop football and join the Big East. Independence is basically a prequel for a guaranteed downgrade. If you think the AAC is a money loser, independence basically taking that trickle of revenue and turning the spigot completely off. Can't have your cake and eat it too. Or in this case, crappy crappy cake. For argument's sake, I'll agree, the AAC is hastening UConn football's demise. But it's not as hasty as independence or any other conference we could put all sports in.

I do think exploring ways to bring back the western G5 teams (BYU, Boise, SDSU) might be worth it but I don't think it would come out of a bunch of schools leaving the AAC, it would be the MWC and AAC sort of merging if ESPN or Fox wants that product.

I have never figured a way through the Courant's paywall so I never read his piece (nor will I). But I'm with @whaler11, I'm incredibly disappointed in him. Coming from a guy who refuses to give up on the dumbfounded "NHL in Hartford" dream, the suggestion of nailing UCONN's athletic department's coffin shut by shutting down football program does nothing but fuel the angry mob contingent.
.

this is an early favorite for post of the year.

this is an early favorite for post of the year.
Jacobs basically said anyone who was against building the new minor league park in Hartford was just ignorant about the issue and not qualified when pointing out why it's going to be a state-financed fiasco down the road. He is always on the side of giving the Courant more sports to latch onto.

As far as Jacobs article goes, I'm about done listening to the "end the program" rhetoric, even if it's supposedly hypothetical. If anything, this CFB Playoff has me yearning success for UConn even more. Does Kansas and Iowa State entertain this type of logic every time they have a bad season or stretch?

$500M is a little exaggerated. 350-400M would get the job done. It'll be interesting to see what the CRDA's decision will be on the future of the XL Center/new arena come the end of the month.

so they went in a different direction, except it was towards sucking eggs rather than the direction they were thinking. That makes sense. Kind of like the "next level" people talked about with Edsall - so we got a coach that took us to the next level. Down.
