Rather than clogging up the transfer thread with back-and-forth talk about what the future holds for MS State, I thought it might be good to have a seperate thread to speculate on MS State women's basketball in 2021-22. There are already 4 MSU players in the transfer portal--Wiggins, Mingo-Young, Cooks, and Morris--with more expected to come. Wiggins and Morris weren't big contributors this year, Cooks (6.1 ppg and 3.3 rpg) and Mingo-Young (5.6 ppg and 3.9 rpg) were bigger contributors but not irreplaceable. The big problem here is the loss of 2 of the 3 players capable of playing center (and of course the prospect of additional transfers from key contributors).
MS State has 4 freshman signed for next year (see link below) along with Temple transfer Ashley Jones. These 5 players seem to fit well with the pressing, uptempo, 3-point shooting game that Nikki McCray Penson wants the team to play. They don't address the lack of size issue at the 4 and 5 spots. It seems like those spots will have to be filled from the transfer portal and junior college ranks. The chance for a lot of early playing time at those positions should help in recruiting some pretty good players.
My gut feeling is that NMP is going to be able to put together a roster full of players that are well suited for her system. She came up with a pretty good recruiting class last year considering a really late start. Not only that, it seems like a lot of high profile recruits had MS State in their final group of schools so NMP was at least making a favorable impression on upper-tier prospects. While 2021-22 might be a dramatically changed roster and largely inexperienced, it should be a roster more capable of executing the visions of the coaching staff--therefore it should tell us a lot more about the quality of the coaching staff than what we could tell from this past season. I'm hopeful that MS State fans will be pleasantly surprised next year and then really excited about the prospects for 2022-23. Time will tell if I'm right or if I'm just being an optimistic fool, but I've learned that being optimistic makes the waiting for an answer much more pleasant.
