Mountain West tournament (Mar. 1-4)

That's a tough way to lose...

It's a bad color combo, but it's our bad color combo. I miss the old Wyoming hat that I used to have. Hope that we get to host in the WNIT and make some teams face the altitude.

Ha. I was gonna try to get some Wyoming gear a few years ago.... but man... thats an odd color combo... just couldnt pull the trigger.

Pretty amazing that Boise State was able to win in OT despite Hodgins and Coleman both fouling out in regulation. Coleman was just named tournament MVP. McGwire was actually on the bench late in 4Q until Coleman fouled out.

The player who really saved BSU’s bacon was Loville. She lost her jumper a bit in the 2nd half but made two huge buckets in overtime that were the difference. She ended up with 20 off the bench.

Again, this is close to the kind of play everyone thought we’d see from Boise State this season. Not sure why it took them five months to display it.

Tough for Fresno St., NIT bound. Boise St. has the MWC tourney dialed in.

I bet the Fresno team was crushed.........
I’m sure they were devastated, but I didn’t see the crying and bawling that we often see this time of year. They just quickly went through the handshake line (with the Boise State staff and support personnel only, as the players were celebrating on the court) and then promptly exited the court.

.-.
For those who were unable to watch, I feel you’re owed a rundown of the final sequence, which was wild.

Boise St took a 5 point lead with 11 seconds left. FSU called their last timeout, jacked a 3 that missed, but Hanna Cavinder came up with the rebound and put-back. 3 point game with 4 seconds left. .

Then Haley Cavinder came up with a steal on the inbounds play and was fouled. She made the first and then intentionally missed the 2nd. She actually had the perfect kind of miss because it bounced hard off the backboard and barely glanced off the front of the rim, which created a long rebound that eluded BSU’s major height advantage and a mad scramble ensues.

Somehow Gamez came up with it on the baseline and just as she was going into her shot, the whistle blew. Her 10 footer swished, momentarily sending the Fresno St fans into a frenzy thinking they’d tied the game and had a chance to win.

But no. The ref signaled “no shot” and then a long delay ensued as the refs conferred, then one of them checked a monitor and then they called the coaches over. From the coaches’ reactions you could see who was getting the good news. Then they announced the call on the PA system and the rest was history.

So bizarre

The story of the conference has definitely been San Jose State. Not that long ago, the lack of any kind of school spirit, local engagement, or success in any sport made them a textbook case for dropping football and D1 sports, but they have gone in the opposite direction and started spending on facilities. I guess we will give them a few years to see where this goes.

Loville is really athletic and talented and will be a major contributor for BSU next season after Lupfer and Hodgins graduate. She just needed an opportunity.

I think that Lupger, Hodgins, Coleman and Christopher are all graduating, no? And I'm guessing that McGwire stays another year even though she's academically a senior?

Fresno State's key players are juniors and freshmen. Will be interesting to see how they do after this disappointment.

Loville was a big time scorer in HS. Yet another Seattle area prospect that left home.

BSU has 6 players on their roster from Washington, 4 from the Westside and 2 from the Eastside.

I gotta say, Loville is a major trash talker. She and the Cavinders were getting into it toward the end. Haley had words for her when she hit the 3 to send it to OT but of course Loville had the last say scoring the crucial buckets in OT

True. Loville is a very confident young woman. Athletically and strength-wise, there aren't many in the MWC that are her equal. Sometimes, that confidence has limited her at BSU. She will play professionally somewhere after BSU.

Hanna had a few claps for her as well. Loville and the Cavinders will certainly make for some great MCW matchups in the future:

No, one side of my family is. Since they all went to Wyoming, that was the first school that I rooted for before knowing where I was going to college.
