Mountain West once again looks to be one of the most competitive mid-major conferences in the country. The league already has wins over Gonzaga, Creighton, Kansas State, and Arizona – by four different teams – and no one has substantially separated themselves from the pack. Six teams received first place votes in the preseason poll, and a couple months later, the landscape at the top is no less crowded than it was then.

Wetzel's take on the Lady Rebs:

While the league has likely gotten too competitive for UNLV to repeat its 41-1 run over the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, Lindy La Rocque’s squad is still a force to be reckoned with in the Mountain West. Don’t let the 5-5 record fool you – UNLV’s schedule has been far from easy. The Rebels have three Big 12 losses, including two on the road and one to No. 15 Baylor in which they led by six entering the fourth, and two Big East wins.

Saturday features two important games among the elite in the Mountain Eest. Boise State risks falling to Owen. Edit 0-2 too if they're not able to win on the road against San Diego.

The wandering Lobos visit Grift City to take on UNLV in what should be a very revealing game for both teams.

2pm tip on ESPN Plus in Vegas has the wandering Lobos looking for a w against the lady Rebs. NM looks to extend its winning streak to 4, with their three losses to Big 12 teams.

The Rebs escaped with a 1 point win in Phoenix against the hapless 1 - 10 Lopes. Lindy will look for Meadow Roland and Jazzy Lott to produce on the offensive end.

I think the key is the ability of the wandering Lobos to take advantage of the defensive deficiency that the Rebs are trying to solve particularly in the paint.

The winner of this contest will have an early advantage in the standings.

My goodness, Wyoming only managed to score 36 today against Fresno St. Most of the time if you score 53, it's not going to be a 17 point victory.

Yesterday sweep for the home teams in the Mountain West. Winning on the road is hard.

Boise State opening with two losses is going to have a whole lot of trouble moving up in the standings.

UNLV appears to have righted the ship in Grifty City. Those of us who saw the wandering Lobos as the leader in conference may have to reevaluate that after the beatdown last night. It was raining threes in Las Vegas as the lady Rebs rediscovered their mojo. 16-25 from three land as Lindy's team destroyed the Lobos dominating in every element of the game.

San Diego State looked amazing building upon their tournament championship and participation in the big dance last year. Complete domination of Boise State in SoCal.

After a slow start Colorado State dominated in their victory at home.

I'm increasingly worried about former Sun Devil Amanda Levin's tenure at Nevada. Doesn't appear that she will join Jeff Waltz or Charlize Turner Thorne in the 500 win club.

On the 28th the 1 - 10 Lopes from Grand Canyon travel to San Jose State to play the now 1 and 10 and by then 1-11 San Jose State in what is being billed as the futility classic.

And, in a too early take I'm now looking for UNLV and San Diego State in the championship game in March at the Thomas Mack.

Mountain West tourney rarely follows chalk it seems like. It is the wild wild west after all. Boise has quickly left my field of contenders, but I still have Colorado St. in the group.

Well there you have it the Aztecs maintain the home court win weekend. They hold on to beat Sac State led by former NAU Lumberjack Allie Cummings and her seven points three rebounds and want to assist.

Going into the basement classics on the 28th it'll be the 2-10 Aztecs at home against Winston Gandy's one win Antelopes.

It's an afternoon game with a 3:00 p.m. tip and you can watch with me on the Mountain West Network.
