More trouble in ACC paradise?

ND loudly and repeatedly told both the Big East and the ACC up front that football would never permanently join their conference.

With multiple full disclosures, both conferences voted to admit ND without football.

Somehow, some way, it was/is ND's "fault" that it is a a member without football being included.
 
I just don't understand why conferences are so dumb that they fall over each other to accept ND into their conference for every sport except the only one that is a true national brand

That’s the deal the conferences made.. on the other had, the ACC can hardly be faulted for lobbying to get a football member into the playoffs. That’s the deal ND made.

This piece is not out of line at all from what I understand. The ACC's most likely fall back is too pull from the schools noted in this story with a slight emphasis on academics and/or long term potential. Memphis the outlier here.

I think one of the wild cards is the CalFord. Does CalFord quit on this ACC set up or stick it out in 2030? I don't CalFord has a clue yet themselves, got to live this transcontinental experience a bit longer to know. I do think they would really love to pull Utah away from the B12 at that moment and the B12 can take Louisville in return - maybe our very first Power Conf trade of schools. Just having one more west coast school would be a tremendous boost.

The top 3 teams of the ACC account for 40% of TV viewership. Given there are17 teams to have equal viewership you would need 5.9% from each team. There are a lot of teams in the ACC that bring little value. I would assume if the top 3 teams in viewership left the ACC, the tv contract would go to around 60% of the current contract value. Once that happens you then will have the other higher rated teams looking to leave, leaving you with 11 Teams with only 40% of the viewership. This is why the ACC will fall apart.

Can someone show the numbers for the other conferences? My guess is that the top 3 teams do not make up 40% of the TV viewership in these other conferences- BIG10, SEC and BIG12

What Rutgers is great for is a lot of the other BIG10 Alumni that live in the NYC area can catch their team winning a game against Rutgers in New Brunswick.

Oh I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s close. How many Minnesota and Illinois games did you watch this year? How many Indiana games did you watch in 2022? Michigan and Ohio State will always lead the way in the Big. The SEC has had Alabama, Georgia and maybe LSU. B Over 5 years the B12 is impossible because Texas was the bell cow then Oklahoma. They probably impact the SEC now. But how many Mississippi, Miss State or Auburn games did you watch over the last 5 years? And how many of the Ole Miss games were BEFORE 2024? Has Miss State ever been on the Game of the week?

Here’s the thing with this stuff. It can change over time. FSU, Clemson and Miami are brands. One of the advantages of being a brand is you get better media placement. ABC or ESPN not ESPNU or the ACC network. But 2 of the 3 are coming off 2 straight weak years. I bet if you tracked it from 2013 the ACC, for example, VaTech would be MUCH higher. In a year or so if FSU and Clemson continue to struggle they will no longer account for as much.

I think SEC has quite a few brands that do well. Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, and Tennessee. I will frequently watch a game if one of those teams is on TV. The ACC just has a lot of mediocre football teams. For example does anyone watch football games of Wake Forest, BC, Duke, Syracuse? Their home attendance for football games is lousy as well.

If the Illinois or Minnesota game was on FOX at noon or 3:30, I'd watch it. But they're not.. Michigan or Ohio State are on FOX in those windows. I'm not watching Ohio State because I care about them. I'm watching them because that all that's available. Same for the SEC. I couldn't care less about Alabama or LSU.. but I don't have a choice. I just want to watch football.. so I watch what's available to me when UConn isn't on.
 
You probably watch Auburn or Florida if they are playing Alabama or Georgia. If you watch Auburn-Miss State you are probably the only one.

I agree though that the SEC is a bit of an outlier. But I still would guess that 3-4 teams dominate viewership.

That’s my point. The networks put the brands on the better/more available outlets. Until last year you probably couldn’t find Indiana on any “prime” sites. Now you do. Michigan still gets them because they are Michigan even when they aren’t that good. Same with Alabama and FSU and Clemson. But if any of those teams have a long stretch of poor performances, they will be replaced with one who is good for a stretch.

It isn’t just football. The same thing happens in basketball. UConn probably has many more network games on FOX or NBC or whatever than say Providence or Xavier. Why? They might make it when they play UConn. UConn is a national champion many times over and a major brand.

whatever wild CR musings we can come up with, I don't even give bcu a thought anymore. they were dead to me 20 years ago and are exiled from the ncaa tournament. I'm interested in some old Big East mates but if the Boston Market is needed, give Northeastern a shot.

That alone shows how little BC cares about basketball.
