Mohegan Sun Tournament - unsettled questions

Most people who get this virus don't even know they are sick. It does not have the same symptoms as most flu type things unless you are severely affected. The people who are include the elderly (us) but mostly if there is a weakened immune system, diabetics, or are prone to get severe reactions to the flu according to the CDC. I can't live my life in fear of something that might affect 0.5% of the population. It is a gamble I hope not to lose.

On a more positive note for those going to the Mohegan Sun for the Tournament, I stumbled upon an MSN Lifestyles article on the Best Sandwiches in each state and the Connecticut winner is right down the shore in Noank at Abbott's Lobster in the Rough and it's call OMG Lobster Roll... :)

We go there every time we vacation in Ct (which is often). It's soooo good and the view of the marina while you eat is pretty great.

IMO, anyone over 70 is "at risk", whether they want to or not. :(
 
Was not 0.5% on the cruise ship. Seems to me there's little basis for projecting how many might be infected, and also unlikely USA will approach the discipline of China and others in slowing spread (see first person accounts of ex-pats or travelers who are there). Nor do we know that most who get it don't know they are sick. We've not done that much testing yet. From what I read, most get fever and dry cough, "flu like". For some, hospitalization is required, worst case respirator. If it gets a firm foothold in any country, will there be the beds, the isolation capacity, the respirators. I write from Ghana in West Africa. Many fewer weakened immune systems here, early deaths are common. But would be near impossible to contain unless the 95 degree heat does it.

what is transpiring now sort of reminds me of the start of the mini-series " The Stand" that was shown some years ago? It ended with the apocalypse.

I'm a fan and desperately want to go. I also am generally not an alarmist, but do have some education and have been watching the medical media. As of right now (Fri pm) I don't know what I will do.

Hard for all us to sort this out & the vested interests are tailoring their reporting on this so as to confuse us all, whether or not we have expertise. The economics of this are an unfolding mega-disaster and many have an interest in playing Larry Vaughn's role as the protective mayor of Amity in Jaws trying to safeguard his community's economic well-being in the face of crisis.

But more and more of the not politically affiliated medical community are coming out against discretionary public gathering - especially large. More today on prime CNN, MSNBC air. Which is totally politically INCORRECT because it crushes the economy if you warn people not to even go to movies.

Several of the non-politically driven medical/public health officials have gone on air to explain what "elevated risk" means, and it's not just us seniors. Actually as they laid out THEIR definition it counts over half of the total US population going far beyond age alone to include anyone with a laundry list of underlying conditions or increased vulnerabilities.

OK so I'm really not trying to be Kassandra here and hope to God this is way over-blown, but in all honesty I don't know and lots of politically independent smart people are urging caution including simple public outings like movies. Screws me as I want to go the the last PC Friars home game tomorrow too.

I don't know, I just don't know.

All good considerations. After much thought, my wife and I decided to go. We’ll by careful. Probably won’t go to as many games as we normally would. Won’t hang out at the casino much. Maybe go to this Ford’s place I hear folks talking about. But, so far, no identified cases in CT (I’m sure there will be many) and we really, really want to see the Huskies live (haven’t done so in 2 years. And yes... we’ll wash our hands frequently.

I'm going on Saturday. The risk is still low enough for me. I will also be prudent and avoid as much contact as possible.
 
I just cancelled my reservation at Tuscany for this afternoon and decided not to attend the game. Not happy about it, but out of an abundance of caution thought it was the prudent thing to do. :(
 
I just read MSGRET's post under the Coaching Wins thread per Stanford maybe not hosting NCAAs due to California Public Health limiting event size and posted - but relevant here so I will recap.

I DID go to the Finals last night at Mohegan. My impression is Mohegan was diminished overall - parking, eating, the Arena & game - just an impression not a count, but I've gone to all the AAC Tournaments there and attend other events too.

Rightly or wrongly I went with trepidation wearing gloves, stopping to wash my hands, trying to keep distant from folks. As luck would have it the seats either side of me (lower center) were vacant, but I still chatted with other fans & we collectively expressed our mutual concern.

Shut-downs & restrictions are spreading faster than the stock market melt-down and, while I plan to attend at Storrs I will not be shocked if guidelines are implemented by some level of public health authority that preclude that option.

The ladies looked GREAT last night. My layperson view is they appeared much more fluid than a month ago when they got crushed by the top teams & Team USA. Kyla's injury doesn't help an already short bench, bless her as she has been a stalwart.

Hope the NCAAs go better than forecast, hope some of us can actually attend, hope this Cvirust thing is over-estimated (but doubt it).

OK well this is now put to bed - no NCAAs, NBA, restricted public gatherings, reduced flights, National Guard in NY and a further list of things most of us thought we'd never see waiting in the wings.

Leader of Germany, Angela Merkel, is quoted fearing that up to 70% of Germany could get the Cvirus. With a 3% death rate that would be tragic.

I think this teaches us to always believe public health officials over politicians when they update us on TV.

Agree. Wife and I went to Mohegan Sun. So far we’re both ok, but wish we hadn’t gone. In less than a week we’ve gone from don’t worry to be careful to you can’t go. Not that much has changed in a week - other than the protective efforts becoming dramatically stronger. Stay safe out there all you fellow B’yarders.

But, now the Cvirus concerns may impact my behavior.

I live in Pawtucket and, all of the sudden, we have Cvirus cases. The local CVS/Walmarts were out of hand sanitizer/others BEFORE the announcement. This morning I stopped at CVS and now people are calling for mask/sanitizer/other deliveries to meet them. The News Media are talking about avoiding public gatherings and - all at once - normal people at the Y/restaurants/grocery stores are questioning things like congregating in public.

So for me I'm still excited to go. But the world here is changing literally day-by-day. If things develop unexpectedly I think it possible attendance will be affected, or worse.

Lots of people at Mohegan and the restaurants, not all healthy on good days.

Don't like to see the world this way but I think both Mohegan & the 1st two NCAA Rounds at Storrs will be affected - at least for me as I'm taking it day-by-day.
