On the "don't defend well" comment: this has been an issue for quite a while with the USMNT. Protecting the middle of the field in front of the net should be among the most basic things yet there have been countless incidents where there is a lapse by someone, leading to the opponent having an opportunity to score.

An analogy would be that many of our players are attempting first year algebra but haven't yet mastered multiplication and division and are still a little weak in addition and subtraction.

Miles Robinson was the guy until he got hurt and never recovered his form then dropped out of the picture.

Ream was a fringe player until he made a leap with Fulham first in the championship and then the EPL. When they played Germany in Hartford, he was several steps ahead of the others just by being able to read the game.

I have no idea why the other center backs are so horrible. Scally actually had a good window but he's not a WC level left back, but if he keeps this level I'm OK with him as a defensive sub. I think Weah needs to give it a go at RB. It would open a spot for one our many other wing players.

Exactly the type or incestuous move I'd expect from USSF.

The last 30 years have been building towards 2026. A WC on home soil with a player pool full of guys earning a good living in the top European leagues.

To put an unproven coach in charge of that when so many better options are not only available but interested in the job is complete malpractice.

He needs to be gone too.

When an opposing coach is ridiculing your tactics as amateurish after a big game, that should have been the signal to end this once and for all and forever.

Instead they doubled down.

I've never seen a coach like van Gaal ridicule the opposing coach after a game.

That was eye-popping and embarrassing.
 
We deserve a full explanation why he was hired back. What did he show in stint 1 that gave the fed assurance things would be better?

He was given every chance. It was time to let him go. Hope the US Soccer can do better this try.

They need a home run. Especially with what Marsch did in the Copa. An international hire is a must.

There is one guy. This job will be for two years. Get us to do well in 2026, No one will inspire the team, the fan base, the advertisers, tv, etc more than Jurgen Klopp. The timing is perfect. For him and US soccer.
 
Wonderful news. Now, now, we have to see if USSF (Matt Crocker) can get it right this time.

If we are serious about Klopp, that is a massive step in the right direction.

What I also would love to see is having a contingent of our officials study what Spain does, figure out how to teach that to kids from a young age and have that style of play permeate our youth soccer. Solid spacing and fundamentals, ball possessions without ridiculous passes leading to losing possession, and too often in our case, a scoring opportunity for our opponent.

We, more than basically any other country, need to have our best professionals play six to eight hours away in a different hemisphere, obviously spread out among numerous leagues and clubs. The cohesion needed to compete as a national team will need to come from a basic philosophy that our players grew up in. It will take a generation for this to happen here, but until we start doing this, any dreams of doing better than perhaps one win in a knockout stage in a World Cup will remain dreams forever.
 
I don't think most knowledgeable soccer fans think the US is gonna win the WC in 2026. We're not winning in 2030, 2034, or 2038 either. If we could get a huge bump from 2024 (as a nation playing "football) we might start talking about a chance in the 2040's. Maybe.

Only 8 have ever won WC (Uruguay, Italy, Germany, Brazil, England, Argentina, France, Spain). France didn't win one til the 16th WC (68 years). Spain, even longer. And Netherlands, Portugal never have. We aren't even close to their level. In a WC Quarter or Semi against Belgium, Croatia, Turkey, a couple hot African countries (they vary), I'm not betting on the USA either.

For 2024, we just want a decent showing. We'll get a decent draw, so we need to get out of the group and try to make a decent showing in a quarter. That would be the best. That would mean winning 2 games after the Group stage.

We sent people overseas to study this stuff umpteen times. It’s a waste of time. There is no magical drill that we are not using. It’s culture that is missing.

Player wise, not much will charge until they change our culture from top to bottom.

Our system isn’t about creating good players, it’s about seperating vain parents from their money.

It’s a miracle that we’ve generated the players that we have tbh.

And until we have a highly competitive pro league with pro/rel and PRESSURE we probably won’t generate top coaches in the USA. They will have to go abroad like Marsch and Cherundolo (sort of) and get experience.
