Kelsey Mitchell scored 30 points and Stephanie Mavunga added 17 points and a career-high 26 rebounds to help No. 5 Ohio State to an 85-64 win over 10th-ranked Stanford on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Looks like Ohio State exposed some of Stanford's warts tonight. No offense for the Cardinal. Only one starter for Stanford scored in double figures. Stanford was also out-rebounded by the Buckeyes 64-41.

Not surprised. Stanford seems to have trouble playing in the eastern time zone. I think they will be a little more settled down on Sunday, but am still not sold on their talent.

At all. We may indeed see a different team by the time the NCAA's roll around, but the early losses they'll have to eat may leave them at 3rd or so in the Pac 12.

In fairness, Stanford lost 3 starters. I'm not sure where they "should" be ranked - but for OSU, it was the 3rd quarter where they really put the hammer down, outscoring Stanford by 10.

I think Stanford will improve as the year goes on. Ohio State crushed them. Uconn will likely do so, as well. Not sure much of this counts for anything. But it is a much better match up, say, than Texas vs. Stetson.

Stanford did no t shoot the threes very well, and had no answer to stop Ohio state's rebounding....particularly at the offensive end.

It appeared to me that VanDerVerr thought Mavunga was a big reason for the win. Also it would appear that the New Stanford Offense --is offensive. When your first half offensive is McPhee I would think Tara may rethink this Offense adjustment. Of course some may think Tara deliberately lost this game to fool Geno to walk into her trap--think again!!

Shame on you LA---expressing thoughtful comments while I am thrilled to "stick it to Tara"!! To me it appeared Stanford for most of 3/4th were one good run away from taking over, and just couldn't break through. If Smith was as effective (without much defending her) as her size and athletic ability would indicate, along with McPhee it could have been different. But Tara's defensive stances and movement was helter skelter and less than effective--the same could be said for their offense

damn it...

is she playing in as a 5th yr player?
No, but she was WNBA eligible in April 2017, based on her birthday. She decided to come back for her 4th year of college. The differences between her and Kaleena are (1) she has the ball in her hands all the time, (2) she is the primary offense, (3) she puts up way more shots than Kaleena did, and (4) she shoots a much lower percentage. Here are some stats as an example: Kaleena's senior year, she put up 396 shots in total, including 248 treys. She made 121, for .488 shooting from the arc. In Kelsey's junior year, she put up a whopping 609 shots, including 312 treys. She made 115, for a shooting percentage of .369.

Kelsey is the ultimate volume shooter. Her percentage is respectable, but not outstanding. Kaleena wasn't the most accurate shooter, but she was close. She was perhaps the best combination of volume and efficiency.

It was inevitable that some player would come in as a freshman, have the green light to shoot, and surpass Kaleena's record.

Lou has a real chance to pass Kaleena's 398 (she's about halfway there), but Mitchell's mark should stand a long time.

I believe that Mitchell may have set the single-season record her freshman year with 127 treys, but Brianna Butler of Syracuse topped that by 2 her senior year.

Mil, you're being nice by calling her a volume shooter. She's a chucker, and there's no spot on the floor, no point in the game where a shot isn't called for. To me, like DD, her athletic ability is undeniable. But if DD shot on every whim at UT people would have a right to call her selfish (which I never have). I mean, at one point in the game against Stanford, less than 2 mins left and OSU up by a goodly amount, Mitchell pulls up at the key, fakes taking the air out of the ball, dives inside to make a shot, then decides on a last second pass that goes awry. Pointless. Unlike DD who overjumps on her shot which ruins her release point, Mitchell shoots off angle, wrong footed, at full speed toward the basket, full speed sideways, and on and on. At least DD played defense. Not my kind of player.

Smith is a better player than what she displayed yesterday. Missed a bunch of shots that she would normally make. Just a really bad game for her.

Geno's teams do it all the time (some would say out of necessity), but it is hard right out of the box to travel and meet a top ranked opponent, even when your coach is a legend. Stanford did not look like a Tara team on either end. She'll tighten things up, but it'll take some time.

I would hope so. She would need to be near bad to have been good in the OHIO game. He movement, without significant defenders, was awful. The second time Geno saw her making that move, had she been a Husky and not a Tree, he would have pulled her for the game. I though their Freshman (don't remember her name ) showed promise. This shows what a team with out a Samuelson can turn into.

I don't totally disagree but Stanford has and had the personnel to block out, find proper positioning, and move properly to secure Rebounds. Way too many were tipped out of their hands by smaller players. All of this is fixable and for a top Div 1 coach it only makes me ask why didn't they shoot, defend, rebound as a top flight team??

I think Stanford was intimidated by the overall speed in which tOSU played. They took such quick shots (drives or three pointers) that Stanford never could seem to get in position to box out.

There are some posters on this board who will go absolutely bonkers if Stanford defeats Uconn this Sunday. If Uconn loses to that Stanford team they definitely are not an elite team.
