Sometimes numbers do tell stories. You think we would practice some offense regularly, over the next few weeks from the 30 yard line in.

if stats don't lie,

  • then we will exceed the high for red zone possessions under the prior regime- is that possible? Less than 4 RZ possessions per game is the new normal here?
  • we need to asterisk the opponent ppg stat, as they are doing that agianst our offense!

I'd pass on red zone O and start testing the kids on the rules, because they don't understand them, and I'd figure out how to to gain more than 2.2 yards per rush. Because frankly if you can't gain more than 7 yards gross in a 3 down possession (net would include the now routine penalty added in), you don't need to stay awake wondering what happens when you get in to the red zone.

Lies, damn lies and statistics - ever heard that before? Red Zone Possession / Score % is a horrible metric to use since it rewards a team for taking a field goal. Especially when you have such a small sample size, it only takes a few anomalies to skew the results. Our last possession against Temple ended in the red zone and we could have called a time out, kicked a field goal but I don't think improving the statistic would make anyone feel better. Against BYU in the 4th quarter, I think we went for it twice on 4th down in the red zone when we were down multiple scores.

Adjust for those (assuming just kicked a field goal) and our % goes up to 77%. The damning thing is the decline in the number of opportunities where we got to the red zone over the previous three years. Horrific.

I would have taken 3 points over a pick six on the first possession

Yeah, I got the joke. But that statistic basically measures your combined turnovers and crappy kickers as opposed to "efficiency" in the red zone.

And yes, I certainly would have taken the FG over a pick 6. But that drive ended with us on the Temple 21 yard line - so it didn't qualify as red zone I don't think. The series later in the half where we recovered the muffed punt and Puyol missed the 45 yd FG did qualify however.
