At the 6:55 mark of the first period MoJeff entered the game with the score 34-20 (Soon after the 19-0 run)

She committed a foul off the ball at 6:28 in the offensive zone and was immediately yanked with Caroline coming in for her. The TV showed her speaking with CD the elder but I don't read lips and can't make out what was said (maybe I should learn).

Was there a special no-no that transpired?

What are you calling a mystery? She was called for a moving screen. When on the bench, coaches talk to their players.

She was in the game for approximately 28 seconds of playing time.
Without being able to read his mind I doubt that that was Geno's intention when he put her in.
Or was it…oops its Caroline's turn? My bad
Only seem strange to me?
Seemingly (guessing here) seemed strange to her.

Are you sure it was a moving screen? seems awful far away

I think it also had to do with the Cards rotation as one of their slower guards had just entered the game as well which gave Geno a chance for a favorable match up for CD.

I remember this situation and noticing at the time that MJ had a very perplexed look as if wondering what's going on here? My personal opinion is that MJ had several shaky moments during the playoffs especially against the better teams and Geno wasn't willing to take any chances.

She also had some un- amazing moments against better teams.

I've complained for months it seems, that she and at times Morgan were treated somewhat bizarrely with regard playing time and rotations prior to the NCAA's and in this case during…(a very unpopular theory of mine).

There very well may be an innocent explanation of what happened. I just can't figure it out and the 'Yard seems disinclined to address it.

For me Uc's explanation is not convincing…but if true, in my view it's a mistake. Not the time to make nice to upperclassmen while the frosh are getting the sense of big time competition.

And another freshman is playing like a superstar.
In another thread I'm hearing that she still has a lot of deficiencies and has a lot to learn.

God help our opponents if true.

We need these kids to have confidence going into next season, goodness, they're going to virtually lead the team.

Pulling them out of a championship game after a few seconds seems counter-productive to instilling that needed confidence.

Or, perhaps saving them for a confidence shattering experience. Geno's intuition based on years of observation?

Any UConn player whose confidence is that fragile chose the wrong program. UConn is the place you go to be constantly challenged.

As I told all players I coached, "Confidence can only be taken from you if you give it away."

Re some on this subject- Hard to criticize the coaching after another Final Four and another National championship! I think it is absolutely classy the way Geno consistently started Caroline, and then brought "Messiah" of the bench as he saw fit! Mo Jeff had great moments throughout the tmt, and will be the first true point guard we have had since Renee M I think! I think Messiah and Tuck got a lot of valuable and productive minutes in big games down the stretch!

Next year, as much as we will miss Kelly and we will. Everyone else another yr older, stronger, smarter- Mo Jef will make the next jump like Brianna B did until her injury. Morgan Tuck is going to be a monster player for us in every way. I think she is also so good on both ends of the court is is going to be scary. She will be draining threes with confidence, taking defenders off the dribble with a quick first step for a big girl, and she is really cool and collected with the ball at the high post. she is unafraid and aggressive. They should be good enough to not worry about rushing BBanks back until she is ready to come back. This was a great year and it is much more rewarding having to overcome adversity to win!

Sorry to be absent for a day or so, I was traveling down to Guatemala and last night, service was spotty and I couldn't pick up the 'yard.
And of course more important things have subsequently transpired.
I appreciate and largely agree with the posted comments
Except that No one has explained the 28 second appearance.
Any specific idea on that?

Oh hell, why don't I take a stab at it. In that 38 seconds she committed a foul on an illegal screen that negated an open shot for KML and then on the other side she gave too much help and gave an open shot up to a player who took more then 50% of her field goals behind the line.

Could have been I wasn't counting. That would certainly explain it. Some players he allows to play with 2 some he doesn't. Also some situations he allows players to play with 2 and some he doesn't. NC game with a freshmen? prolly not.

Another thing I have noticed is sometimes Geno seems to have very specific instructions for what he wants a player to do or don't do. If he sends them in and they don't do it or do something he specifically said not to, they come back out pretty quick. Don't know if that was the case, but a possibility.

I have two thoughts on this.

Either Geno suddenly realized that it was MJ on the grassy knoll and to protect her from the glaring lights of the media, he pulled her from the game to shield her from the unwanted notoriety that she would certainly be subject to if she were allowed to wreck her special brand of havoc on the Cards. (Luckily, for her, he acted in a mere 28 seconds)
-OR-
shutting down the DC phone system really did happen and lasted exactly 28 seconds allowing Geno a chance to sabotage UConn's chances of winning by pulling MJ before her confidence grew such that she was about to shred the Card's hopes.

Thankfully, in the end,, Geno's dastardly plan was foiled by a team led to revolt against their coaches by their extraordinarily selfish need to win it all. Obviously, future recruiting efforts will have to more tightly focus on players that are highly pliable and subservient if Geno's will & whims are to be fulfilled.

Hmmm, what if those two thing BOTH happened....

Kiah got a very quick yank in the Kentucky game I just watched in the second half during their mini-run when she failed to handle a situation that ended up with a BH turnover and an uncontested layup. I saw him heatedly discussing the issue with her on the bench, but then give her a quick pat on the shoulder and she returned to the game about a minute later.
CD was not having a particularly good game against the Cards pressure and speed and her best match-up was probably against Shelby Harper who checked in at the same time, so why not get her a little run at that point.
And Yes that was Jeffersons second foul less than 30 seconds after Bria had also picked up her second. Sitting a freshman who has picked up two fouls in 3 total minutes of playing time is probably not a bad idea, especially if you think you are going to need her speed in the second half to combat an expected Louisville surge.

As a side note - I noticed that Geno is almost ALWAYS coaching. Maybe not always, but I've often seen other games where opposing coaches sit, knee, stand, squat, etc. and don't seem to have much to say to their players. It seemed to me that every time the camera panned on Geno, he was animatedly gesticulating something to the players. I know i've seen in other games he sits and watches, but i was wondering...

For people who maybe pay more attention than I do, does Geno generally coach a lot more during games from the sidelines than other coaches, or is it more even? Just curious... Even when we were up big vs. L'ville, he was still coaching - and very animated.

I know it goes back to how he wants the team to play the game regardless of score. Pretty cool.
