That was my takeaway. We looked like a team really dependent on two players. This feels a bit like a loss.

But it just shows we shouldn’t get cocky. And we need to improve. This was a good early season test. That’s why Geno schedules these games. And honestly, we could have folded after the third quarter. But we didn’t.
We, the fans, may get cocky, but I highly doubt that the team gets cocky. I’m in agreement with everything else that you said. On to the next game.

UConn outscored in both Q3 and Q4. Hope during season Williams, Ice and Jana become inside forces. In chat, someone said KK needs to work on pull-up jump shot- yes! Don’t know stat, but UConn must have been out rebounded. And last, watching Swords hitting shot after shot is how it must feel for other teams when Azzi is cooking. Swords is fantastic!

So Sarah and Azzi are true stars!

Will the rebounding Serah reveal herself?? How many times did smaller MI players get the rebound on her? When is she going to be able to play starter minutes?

So Blanca is a freshman in college.... Looked like a deer caught in headlights most of the game. I guess it had to happen at some point.

Jana got her shot and blew it. I wished we had Ice available. She would have brought the temperature down and settled things at the high post. Pun intended

What could this team be if Shade's shot could get consistent. When she is scoring, they are cooking.

I think a little more Kayleigh time with the other 4 starters would have been good.

Anyway, there are 13 women that need to take a look at themselves in the mirror and 2 women in need of an ice bath.

What SC team did Michigan play in what season opener?

OP said it was LAST season.

Other than Strong, our bigs need to play big, block out, move to the ball more. Much too much standing around. We lacked quickness under the hoop. Seems like they played UConn basketball better than us with complete desire on their part. Great effort by both teams and good for Women's basketball!
I think Geno decided to go mainly with small ball- it worked in first half but not second.

Kayleigh had a tough night shooting but had that nice layup +1.

When I read some pre-game posts, I sometimes had to shake my head. At times, UConn fans forget the days of intimidating opponents with just the name on the jersey are long gone. Other teams have great coaches and players now and games won’t always be a cakewalk.
Maybe that's true but this could have easily been a 30 point victory. When they were up by 20 I was saying they might win by 40 lol...Then the 3rd quarter happened.

All in all this was a great win and the bottom line is that Uconn is only going to get a LOT better come January and February.

I won't go on the "Michigan is a great team" bandwagon because it's only November. It's only our 4th game out of about 40....

Our kids haven't had the chance to gel as a unit yet. It takes time. But I like what I see for the most part.

Azzi is becoming a star. This is the player we were all waiting for before the injuries... What she did last year and this year will put her on that wall of fame.

I love KK. The reason this kid starts is because she makes things happen. Sure her offensive game is not there yet but everything else she does helps win ballgames...

Sarah is Maya 2.0..

20 something rebounds. That's Dennis Rodman territory.

I think we are eventually going to be back to intimidated teams because of the name on our jerseys lol.. It just takes time.

The other thing I liked is that our kids did NOT give up. That is a huge characteristic of Championship caliber teams. Sure Michigan hung in there but we won.

1. We need more from the newcomers.
2. Did Jana set a record for greatest distance from the ball when fouling?
3. Sarah Strong is unreal.
4. Azzi has no heartbeat. (Geno said that about Berube when asked who he would pick to shoot end of game free throws)

I heard a comment during a football game the other day. “They only ask if you won, they don’t ask by how much.”

And that’s my takeaway for tonight.

UConn was challenged big time. I’m glad it happened now and not in March. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. There were a lot of players being doubted or critiqued hard last year that ended up having incredible late season performances.

An ugly win is still a win.

Azzi Fudd had a POY performance. She made clutch shot, after shot, went on a personal 9-0 run when the offense got ugly and having her on the floor in free throw situations is a luxury. She does not miss there. This game could have been even more complicated without that skillset from her. She was the best player on the floor tonight.

Sarah had a monster game herself, her rebounding in traffic limited Michigan from the multiple attempts they used to diffuse Notre Dame. Sarah is such a unique talent. The toll of her playing 40 minutes showed in the 3rd quarter and she needed a minute but UConn couldn't afford it.

There were flashes of great play from Shade, Arnold, and Serah. But it was intermittent and there were moments, especially in the 3rd quarter where UConns offense stalled. UConn needs another double digit scorer to emerge from somewhere

I got flack for saying that Michigan had a few headaches on their team but they did and they would not go away. They will be dangerous in March.

Games like these show how much we are missing Paige. And how could Serah have ONLY 2 rebounds in 24 minutes? If it wasn’t for Sarah’s 20 rebounds, the results might have been different. Also, we let them control the tempo of the game after the first quarter.

I know it is still early in the season, but we will need Serah to buckle up and show some toughness. Perhaps, Geno should ask Tina to come in to work with our bigs once a week for the next couple months. 😀

After UCONN stole the ball, it should have clinched the win. But Ashlyn needlessly threw a bad pass & Michigan recovered. They got off a three point shot from halfcourt that was deflected at the buzzer. If a foul was called, Michigan would have had three free throws to try to tie the game.
Give the Wolverines credit for never quitting, but the Huskies needed to show more poise tonight.

I only saw the end of 3rd and the 4th.m, which means I saw Syla Swords look like the Canadian Diana Taurasi, and Azzi be the only source of offense.
Its interesting. I think some of the questions ppl had about uconn during the off-season sort of reared its head. Like, who is the teams 3rd scorer, or even 3rd best player. How is Geno going to balance a 15 player roster. How will the point guard position look.

Geno’s biggest issue right now is settling on a post player. Serah is athletic but not very physical. Jana is physical but not particularly athletic. Blanca is athletic and physical but undisciplined. If I were Geno, I would consider going back to Jana as the starter and then substitute off her.

WOW!!!!!! That was a game. Down to the wire.

Kudos to Kim and her team. They came back in the second half and turned the tables on UConn. UConn held on for the win.

Michigan is for real and Syla Swords is for real.

This was the 5th game of the season. This team has yet to gel. For those saying our bench is not that deep, I remind you that last year's team did not gel until after the Tennessee loss. The bench will improve as will the rest of the the team.

A difficult game is a prime learning opportunity.

I have to say, I’m glad they pulled it out. I still have PTSD from the men’s game on Wednesday when they lost after holding an 18 point lead at the half. It was another top 10 matchup and eerily similar to tonight’s game
Are you talking about the UConn-Arizona game Wed. night when AZ. was up 35-33 at the half?

Wow great game. It really shouldn’t have been that close. Our defense coming around and under screens was terrible. Instead of us hedging on the screens we stayed back and let Swords kill us. The last 3 shots that sword took were the same and KK went under and let swords get loose. I think the moments were too big for a lot of huskies. Ziebell looked really nervous. Blanca wasn’t that bad but 2 critical turnovers took her out the game. Jana I’m not sure what she was doing. Going over the back of players and never really getting any type of position in the post offensively or defensively. KK really needs to work on her 3-point shot. Every time she shoots it make me nervous.

If it wasn’t for Azzi, Sarah and we would have been in a world of hurt. Ashlyn, after hitting a couple of 3’s in the first half was just running around missing shots and at the end of the game instead of just holding onto the ball threw it to another player and it was stolen, almost giving the game away. I would have liked to have seen Ice Brady though against Olson. Michigan really doesn’t have a low post presence, so I’m surprised they came back in the second half.
I thought Blanca looked awful. Surprised after her last game.

I wondered why Serah didn't play more. The small ball lineup wasn't working in the second half because KK, Ashlynn, Allie and Kayleigh were not hitting shots (KK did in the 4th quarter) so I didn't understand Serah sitting. I thought one reason we went after Serah was so that she would bring more size. We could have used a few more high-low plays between Serah and Sarah.

I think the thing we will be looking for is who is going to be our consistent 3rd scorer. Last year we had Paige, Azzi and Sarah.

We need a 3rd player to be that game in game out offensive threat. My money is still on Blanca for that, but it may take a little bit.
