Michigan Postgame Thread

Good teams find a way to win bad games. There have been a lot of times in recent years when we fumbled away close games. But not tonight.

A great defensive stand to close out the game. Fitting.

Swords played lights out for Michigan. Props to her.
Props to Michigan and their coach. We got outclassed at halftime and the second half. We slowed the game down and too many subs too quick. But thank God for Auzzi !!

I wanted some challenges and got one.
Confidence builder for Azzi.
I was a little disappointed with Strong down the stretch.

I’m sure there’s little that surprised Geno but it’s good for the players to see their weaknesses.

Ahhhh man, I love these types of games for UCONN. It makes us April Ready.

Great game that gives us a lot of insight to who we really are. I truly believe we're fifteen points better than Michigan. Focus to detail was off and Michigans adjustment second half really disrupted the flow.

The Newbies are better off going thru a tough game like this.

Other than Strong, our bigs need to play big, block out, move to the ball more. Much too much standing around. We lacked quickness under the hoop. Seems like they played UConn basketball better than us with complete desire on their part. Great effort by both teams and good for Women's basketball!

Thrilla in Manilla... so to speak. This was one of those games we just needed to escape. Some really low points for the team and untimely turnovers and poor play. Even that bad pass by Ash in the end almost gave them a chance to tie the game. Lots of things for Geno to go over with the team.

Great game and learning experience, though. Michigan is for real and KBA is doing some great things there. Swords - wow. Welcome to the NPOY short list LOL 8-14 from 3? Gotta find a better way to defend her. But Fudd with the answers and ice water in her veins. Hell of a game!!

She played the whole 40 minutes and still stuffed the stat sheet, per usual. What did else you expect from her when she got 20 rebounds and a double double?!!

As much as we would like a comfortable win, a game like tonight against a scrappy, talented team is a welcome test. Last year, Michigan gave SC all it could handle in the season opener, with Swords putting up 26 points. They are a legit Top 10 team.

UConn is still a work in progress, a lot of kinks still to be worked out. Yes, Sarah was tired - she worked her tail off, but Swords also played the entire game.

It is games like this that Azzi returned for another year of seasoning. I'm still in awe every time I see her release on a shot. She is most definitely the female Steph Curry.

I pity Utah on Sunday.

They'll remember that game. Going forward they know that as much depth and talent as they have that some games the shots won't fall and someone on the other team will hit big shot after big shot. Props to Michigan for a big comeback and darn near stealing the win. Props to UConn for surviving.

Obviously a tale of two halves. We just missed ton of open shots, and after that happens people stop taking them.
Sarah Strong can not be our only rebounder, Serah Williams had only 2, that needs to improve.
The player guarding the player giving Swords those picks needed to be right there. To give that young lady space nearly cost us
First time swords almost became a dagger.

Wow great game. It really shouldn’t have been that close. Our defense coming around and under screens was terrible. Instead of us hedging on the screens we stayed back and let Swords kill us. The last 3 shots that sword took were the same and KK went under and let swords get loose. I think the moments were too big for a lot of huskies. Ziebell looked really nervous. Blanca wasn’t that bad but 2 critical turnovers took her out the game. Jana I’m not sure what she was doing. Going over the back of players and never really getting any type of position in the post offensively or defensively. KK really needs to work on her 3-point shot. Every time she shoots it make me nervous.

If it wasn’t for Azzi, Sarah and we would have been in a world of hurt. Ashlyn, after hitting a couple of 3’s in the first half was just running around missing shots and at the end of the game instead of just holding onto the ball threw it to another player and it was stolen, almost giving the game away. I would have liked to have seen Ice Brady though against Olson. Michigan really doesn’t have a low post presence, so I’m surprised they came back in the second half.

Some thoughts on the Michigan game:
  • Surprised to learn that UConn and MI have never played each other. It’s been 29 years since UConn lost to a 1st time opponent……and fortunately it didn’t happen tonight.
  • Bring on the Utes!
When Fox displayed this, I thought for sure that we were jinxed...almost came true.

Some thoughts on the Michigan game:
  • Michigan is a very good, well coached team that plays hard. During the 1st half it looked as if UConn would blow them out of the gym. But they fought their way back into the game in the 2nd half and gave UConn a real scare.
  • A lot of interesting numbers in the 1st qtr. Sarah’s 9 rebounds were extremely impressive. But my favorite numbers: MI was 2/20 (10%).
  • Every game, Sarah does something amazing. Tonight it was her steal and ridiculous length of the court pass to Ash for an assist, while lying on her back. But it was her lunchpail effort on the boards that keyed UConn's win today. She had a career high 20 rebounds.
  • This may sound absurd. But it felt like Azzi had a relatively quiet 1st half until I realized she dropped 18 on the Wolverines. But her biggest shots were the 3's she dropped in the 4th qtr that were desperately needed by the Huskies.
  • UConn’s offensive execution continues to be inconsistent. At times they look unstoppable and at times they struggle to execute. The 3rd qtr tonight was particularly brutal. When was the last time UConn was outscored 18-4 in a qtr?
  • MIchigan's 2-3 matchup zone gave UConn fits, and Syla Swords is absolutely unconcious.
  • Some big shots by KK and Sarah down the stretch along with Azzi's clutch FT's provided the Huskies with just enough to pull the game out.

Christine reidi at LuhI in Long Island NY is building some high school program. Swords and Heckal tonight.
Swords was unbelievable—
None of her current team is going to UConn and they are all top 5 recruits.
We have work to do this year if we want to go undefeated

That was one of the best first quarters I’ve ever seen. WOW

That was one of the worst third quarters I’ve ever seen. WOW

We were net +3 Q1 and Q3, and completely even in Q2 and Q4. Game of runs where every possession matters and we did JUST enough to walk away with a win

Syla Swords. That was an insane shooting display down the stretch. But how we feel about her is probably how Michigan fans feel about Azzi. For how much Swords went crazy, Azzi outscored her 13-12 in the 4th quarter!

Plenty to work on. Won’t harp on them too much but the main one is that our strong depth needs to grow up fast. We had Michigan completely bottled up early but 37-40 minutes each for KK, Azzi, and Sarah is hard to sustain

Dare I ask…was that a foul on Michigan’s half court shot? Kind of looked like it..would love to see a replay with a better angle

That was fun!!

What SC team did Michigan play in what season opener?

We came out for the second half like the game was over. It was just beginning. Defense was soft, they were on fire and we made several very improvident double teams allowing Swords to get open. A lot of mental mistakes also on the offensive end. We will see the double on Sarah a lot this year as well as the zone and we need a consistent third 3 point shooter to step up. The bench players also have to come in with energy and not be flat and foul and make turnovers.

This game will wind up being very, very valuable to this team. We have a lot of things to fix but it's very early. Practice is not going to be pleasant I would think tomorrow. Should be an easier game by a large margin on Sunday. It's a process but we needed a close examination of our weaknesses. We got that tonight and we will be instantly better because of it.
