Torn labrum and done for 2012. He had a poor second half last year and ate a ton afetr his rookie season, showing up 20 pounds overweight to ST. Surgery is imminent.

And Jesus Montero? Hitting .269 with 2 jacks and 9 RBI.

Alas, the Yanks are still a contendah.

And it was still 100% a good, logical trade. He's young. It isn't his rotator cuff, and he should be fine next May.

I feel bad for the kid he would have been fun to watch. Schilling came back from this but we may not see him for 18 months.

The article I read said at least a year at best which means you may not see with the big club next season

18 months is probably a closer estimate than a year which means you may not see him with the big club next season. He is only 23 so he can come back.

Who had that famous torn labrum we were discussing a few years back? Was that Kazmir?

http://www.app.com/article/20120426...ry-torn-labrum-no-sure-thing?odyssey=nav|head
heres some good research.....

The best-case scenario is a good one. Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter tore his labrum in 2002, required two surgeries, and returned to win a Cy Young award in 2005. Curt Schilling had a minor tear in his labrum in 1995 and returned for the best years of his career.
But a torn labrum was also responsible for the end of Jason Schmidt’s career. He made three All-Star teams before the injury, and made just four major league starts after it. Erik Bedard went from promising young starter to unreliable journeyman. Matt Clement, Wade Miller and Chad Cordero had their careers ruined because of it.

Michael Pineda has begun his official in-game rehabbin' -

Michael Pineda (shoulder) allowed an unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out four over 4 1/3 innings in his first rehab start with High-A Tampa Sunday.

Pineda was reportedly sitting at 90-91 mph with his fastball and touched 93 mph. It's a nice showing from the right-hander, though the Yankees would surely like to see a bit more velocity. Pineda could join the Yankees' rotation by the end of the month if all goes well.

The trade gets better and better...guy is almost all the way back

https://twitter.com/therealarieber

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Try not to get too excited, Yankees fans. But this is what a scout from a rival American League club had to say Sunday after Michael Pineda's first minor-league rehab outing:
"His fastball had life," said the scout, who requested anonymity. "His fastball had good life to it. Looks like the guy I saw in [Triple-A] Tacoma a couple of years ago . . . Unfortunately for us."
Pineda, who is coming back from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, pitched 4 1/3 innings for Class A Tampa against the Lakeland Flying Tigers on an oppressively hot afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.
Pineda threw 68 pitches, 42 for strikes. His fastball touched 95 miles per hour, according to a scout's radar gun, and averaged 90 to 92. He was charged with one unearned run; it scored from first base after he left the game. Pineda allowed two singles: a bunt hit and a bloop to right. He walked one and struck out four.

No rush get the arm strength back and the velocity should move up slowly if healthy......would be nice to get him back at some point but can't get too excited as the report says!

Michael Pineda (shoulder) allowed no runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings in an intrasquad game Friday at the Yankees' spring training complex.

He threw 74 pitches, 57 for strikes and had five strikeouts. Pineda is expected to continue his rehab assignment Wednesday with High-A Tampa. If all goes well, he could join the Yankees' rotation by the end of the month.

The Yanks' tailspin helps him- no rush, no pressure.

At least, that's the way it should be. It won't be. The fact that the guy he was traded for has a knee problem, can't play defense, and has been a TERRIBLE hitter won't matter.

Sounds like he has been handled with kid gloves all the way...thankfully. We'll see the Michael Pineda we saw in his rookie season next year. This year he may simply do okay to decent. That's okay. Cash has serious re0building issues ahead. Pineda is a quality building block.

From Yahoo:

Michael Pineda (shoulder) fired six scoreless innings for Double-A Trenton on Tuesday in his latest rehab start.
Pineda allowed two hits and two walks while striking out four. The rehabbing right-hander reportedly topped out at 95 mph on the radar gun. He now has a 0.63 ERA and 11/4 K/BB ratio in 14 1/3 innings over his first three rehab outings. The Yankees could move him to the starting rotation within the next couple of weeks

Meanwhile, Montero has virtually dropped off a cliff during that time. OPS down to .590 and sent down to AAA in May, then on the DL.

Could be Yankee hype - god knows they put out a lot of smoke about their prospects - but now the word is his arm strength won't be all the way back to Seattle levels until next season.

Montero's numbers in the minors were outstanding. The only possible explanation would be that he's older than he claimed. Has happened to a few major Yankee prospects. Jose Tabata is another that comes to mind. Its fairly easy to dominate the lower levels of the minors when you're 22 and everyone thinks you're 18
