I live in Tennessee. Memphis is simply an awful city. It is one of the few southern cities that losing population and not gaining any business traction. The football program is in shambles and the hoops program is no longer top tier. There is hopefully a long list of schools ahead of Memphis is the BE pecking order.
Memphis is SEC territory. The school is currently the 4th best college team in the state behind UT, Vandy and Middle Tennessee and the football fanbase is all UT, Ole Miss, and Arkansas.
There is no reason for the BE to even think about adding Memphis.
Pretty much every city in the south is awful. They are poor, violent and filthy. Every single one of them. MTSU is not ahead of Memphis in any measure we would care about. The Basketball program will be Top 20 this year.
I am not a huge advocate of Memphis, but after SMU, Houston, UCF and Temple, I would have Memphis next on the list. It has the city all to itself, the basketball program is one of the best available, and the football program can be competitive, as it was about 7-8 years ago.
