Memphis Recruiting

Wow this has been a very good stretch for Memphis athletics. Very odd. Probably doesn’t bode well for them.
 
You really can't make this stuff up. While we're busy chasing our tails over APR nonsense, the new Memphis AD is handing recruits sacks of cash. Got to hand it to Memphis though, they are light years ahead of us in terms of realizing that the NCAA is a scam. Louisville realized it years ago and they're cashing ACC checks now.

We never wanted to learn how to play the game.../ didn't spend the time or the money putting in the infrastructure to be able to play the game.

It's absolutely malpractice, it's even more amazing what Calhoun and Geno were able to accomplish with nimrods all around them.
 
UConn has been under Yale's and Wesleyan's shadows for a long time. Most other state schools, such as Alabama and Michigan didn't have such schools to deal with back then.

Leaders at UConn back then did have the foresight to have Frederick Olmstead design the campus.

Calhoun made an active choice not to cheat. The question is though could have or should have the infrastructure been in place for the next coach, without the help/assistance/blessing of Calhoun.

Michigan, while in a much much much better situation, is going to be in an interesting situation with their next coach considering Beilein didn't cheat either.

There is a difference between giving people bags of cash and the malpractice we've seen here. The fact we're one of the best basketball programs in the nation and we put ourselves in the position where the NCAA could screw us over APR is one of many things that shows how we've always been terrible at this.

The sudden blinding white light of success Memphis is having reminds me of the scene after the high stakes poker game in "The Sting", when "Lonergan" says, "I couldn't call him out for cheatin' better than me, in front of the others!"

Bowen leaving is odd. His contract was extended, in 2015, through June of this year and if he's resigning now it must be because they didn't renew it. That's what's strange based on his career path and the successes he's had, especially at San Jose St. and now at Memphis.

He has NFL experience with the 49er's and two long and successful stints as AD at the college level. At Memphis he was cited for managing $40 million in facilities upgrades and the move to the AAC. He's hired great coaches (Hardaway and a couple football coaches) who have done well and he sure raised Memphis' profile nationally. Seems very unusual that he'd leave now.

If we don't get precious I hope Memphis does. The AAC NCAA tourney performances have been laughable. We need a media circus team in the league and that will not be UConn next year. A good UConn/Mem/WSU/Hou/SMU will be a rising tide for the conference.

That said, and to the point of the thread, you can't not be suspicious of some shenanigans. There's part of me that wants to murder the teams who have blatantly handed bags of money to players while UConn has lost a ton of scollys on nickle-dimer violations, and part of me could care less and wants to just watch basketball and forget about the sausage making. Given I want Memphis to be good I'll stick with the presumption of innocence on this one.

Having two programs that can recruit the absolute best talent puts the American firmly in the top 4-5 conferences. The NBE really only has Nova. The Pac has Cronin at UCLA, which should be interesting going forward.
Memphis is "recruiting like Memphis again," and with the conference now solidly 6th in revenue with twice the exposure/revenue as Conference #7, the tides are flowing the right way.
This is a good article. UConn benefits by a strong Memphis.

 
Per 247 Memphis now has the best recruiting class coming into the season.

It’s great for the conference.

Should be telling how Penny does as a coach.

I think there were predictions that if Memphis didn't get Precious Memphis would probably get Trendon. At least how it was being reported by a local sports shows. Now it just doesn't make any sense. Also the 247 predictions haven't changed from 94% LSU. Typically if there was a chance for another school you would see some leaks ... some change in the predictions this close to deciding.

Makes sense, anyone know the rules around this? With free tuition, and the fact that Penny is certainly wealthy, it’s not like his kid needs the scholarship to pay for college. I think this is the mostly likely situation. But I guess we’ll see later today with watford
