At what point is it kosher to ask if Memphis is doing something a little extra to land recruits?

Penny was relevant in the 90s, is recruiting the American Conference, and even at its peak the under Cal, Memphis was never hauling in guys like this.

Something stinks

The had the number one player in the country in the bag the moment they hired Penny. It gets a lot easier to recruit when you have that as the foundation for the class.

Ehh. Cal was slated to bring in the #1,3 and 4 recruits in the country before he left for UK. Pastner brought in three 5* and two 4* in his first full year. And 6 top 100 kids another year. Were they all cheating? Probably. But Tubby was the real anomaly.

Memphis was more relevant before joining the AAC. They were often at top of CUSA and definitely getting good players. But with Penny being fresh out of coaching some of the better high schoolers especially the #1 player, he's bound to get players. If they win with these players, Memphis will be the team of the AAC.

Well now that Penny has landed a top class, we'll see just how good he can coach. People are going to expect Kentucky like results.

I believe its a lot simpler than FedEx.

Memphis is forming a similar cultural panache that 80's Georgetown, 80's-90's UNLV, 90's Michigan's Fab 5 (somewhat), and Cal's Memphis had.

Some of it is just who Penny is (from the way he dresses to the Lil-Penny commercials)... the way he embraces the NBA with Mike Miller (and LeBron tweeting about him)... and also the wide open style he allows his players to play with.

If you take the likely view that at least some schools are offering $100k per top recruit to commit, the idea that a kid would turn that down and take $0 to go to Memphis in its current state is insane

Not complaining. Could care less if they decide to pay players. Just make it a universal rule and let everyone recruit under the same guidelines

If the FBI trial taught us anything, it's that cheating alone doesn't get you kids. Since everyone is cheating, cheating isn't what actually lands you the kid. Cheating is just clearing the bar to entry. It's the door cover charge at the club. The Gassnola/Self stuff was evidence enough of that.

What lands you the kid is the same as it always has been: relationships. Penny had awesome relationships with several important recruits: Wiseman, Jeffries, Baugh and Dandridge. #1 overall, a top 50, and another 2 top 100. All coached by Penny in AAU / high school or live in Memphis.

Staying and playing in Memphis is a rite of passage for Memphis kids. All 4 already mentioned, the Lawson brothers, Austin Nichols, Adonis Thomas, etc.

From that point on, it's a media talking point. Hurley tried to do the exact same thing with Kofi. He signed the 4* guards, then got Akok, then pitched to Kofi /Precious that they could be a part of something, a narrative. Penny has the advantage of being a narrative unto himself, and Miller also. Top talent brings scout eye balls. Narratives bring media eyeballs. You get both, you get a hype cycle. Hype cycles feed on themselves, and they attract other talent (Quinones, Tucker, Achiuwa, Watford, Ellis, Hampton, etc.) Then that talent goes to the NBA, so then you get a reputation for sending guys to the league. Then the cycle grows and rebuilds. It's the same model that Cal/K have used. The hardest part is getting started, but it's a lot easier when you've got 4 top 100s including #1 overall as locks because you coached them.

Penny Hardaway is the only college basketball coach cheating.

I know Penny (and Mike Miller) have great credibility with their AAU ties but in my opinion, the key is Sam Mitchell on the bench. Mitchell's extensive head coaching experience allows the two NBAer's to use their reputations to recruit local kids while Mitchell is doing the heavy lifting with x's and o's.

Chris Mullin and Patrick Ewing didn't sniff the caliber of dudes Penny is turning down. However, that doesn't mean they are not trying...
Seems better to have the AAC flag up the butt than a new big east one.
Did I say I wanted the Big East? That Memphis flag seems lodged even farther than the American one, good luck getting them out.

What's interesting about this, is that this could be the new way of recruiting. Sign the best kid and then everyone follows... granted Penny coached many of these kids in AAU and Duke happened to get 1,3,5 in the same class. I'm interested to see if this is a shift in recruiting

Total speculation, but any chance Harris or Lomax will transfer now with Quinones and Ellis committing? No chance either of these guys will match their minutes total from their freshmen years.
