Memphis proposing lucrative offer to join Big 12, but it lacks support from conference leadership: Sources

I am probably in the minority on this, but I believe that Memphis to the Big East is a no brainer for both the conference and Memphis. If Memphis has the kind of money that is being discussed in these reports their football can survive as an independent.

Why is it a no brainer?

Why do the catholic schools want another state school that just wants to leave?

Why would we kneecap our precious double round robin for that skank of a school that is third most popular college sports team in its own city.

They do not. Fedex and Lowes were going to put up that $ in sponsorship fees for B12. School is broke otherwise, supposedly cannot pay for football stadium renovations that are halfway done.
 
In the Athletic article, part of the issue is that the AAC teams that moved up outside of Houston's men's basketball program, have all brought very little to nothing to the table. Hence, Memphis's insane offer to kick them out if they can't get traction in 4 years.

Maybe we need a program to offset the sludge that is Seton Hall? Read about their president, his predecessor. Read about the baseball program.

Maybe we just want an actual legit basketball program to balance the likes of the Hall, Georgetown, Butler and DePaul. I don’t love Memphis but really when when you are a small conference and 25% of your members are basically low mid majors or worse and 2 others are A10 caliber you need to think of ways to stay viable.

If Fed Ex really decides to get serious they can buy Memphis way in . The 2 big shipping companies UPS and FedEx have a lot of pull in many circles both money wise and political.
 
While it was a big offer from Memphis, I can see why it wasn’t too attractive to the big 12.

It’s a lot of money but spread over multiple years and throughout all the different schools in the conference it’s not a game changer.

And having to kick out a school after a few years might make it low risk financially but it’s not a good look for anyone

Whatever you thought UConn’s chances were I don’t think it changes them too much, but if they did ever decide to come for UConn they could certainly use this as leverage to give us a worse deal

Memphis is a giant grift. They are having trouble funding the stadium upgrade that is in progress. They have all kinds of recruiting violations. It's in a corrupt dump of a city. It's not even the most popular college team in the city.

Nobody knows Memphis State better than the Big 12.

Seton Hall is already in. It's like saying the B1G should add LIU to compensate for Rutgers.
 
If it wasn’t obvious before it is now. UConn’s only hope of finding a conference home for football is joining a watered down ACC with Memphis and USF etc.

The ACC exit fee drops to a low of $75mill in 2030-31 so 2032 is the earliest that can happen.
 
Not opposed to Memphis joining the BE for Olympic sports anymore since we’ve got no shot at the big12 and a watered down ACC will take us both eventually.

I like the out-of-the box thinking. Does the state require that we play all home games at Rentschler Field? I know that we pay the State to play there.

Apparently nothing is getting it done short of buying our way in for ~$300million. But the status quo should be good enough to get into the ACC in 2030 after they lose their biggest brands to the P3. If it’s not than bye bye football.

It really sucks college sports is in a place where a brand like Memphis has to offer 250 million dollars to even have a chance of fair competition. We better get comfortable.
