The fact that improvement happened in the past (Newton, Cam, Castle, etc.) is a good sign that it can happen. But it also depends on the player. I'd argue that SJ in particular is beyond improvement, and that doesn't bode well for our long-term chances this year.

Why can't we improve when we have Freshmen in McNeeley playing significant minutes while Stewart, Ball and Ross are just sophomores. You don't think they can improve from what we have seen so far?

Would you rather be right and lose? Your team and winning have to come first. Love Dan Hurley but you can express displeasure without going mental all the time. You have to pick your spots, not carpet bomb the refs all game, even if the refs sucked. The refs had enough and hit a breaking point and Dan has to be able to sense that. If it was a 12 point game then let them have it.

Nowell, ya gotta get him in for extended time. He's hard nosed, pugnacious, and can score. Say goodbye to Mahaney and Johnson except for trivial games. Hurley lost the game, he'll learn from this. I should say his assistants will give him well deserved lectures on decorum and common sense. It ain't over until it's over. Better days comin'.

Yes, I think they can improve. But then why was Memphis able to bring their "A" game, and us only a "C+/B-" game? Isn't that a problem right there? Other teams are performing at a high level. We're not. And the other teams will all improve as well.

We steamrolled everyone the past two seasons and did something never done in college basketball. We know he's awesome and he has the best program in the country. He still obviously shouldn't be doing this.

Also Reed needs to be starting. Hurley is the best coach in the country but it's still okay to point out the obvious.

Yea. Now that we've had a real opponent, it's time to end the "open competition" for the starting 5 spot.

Reed: 28min, 22pts (10-13 fg), 11reb, 2ast, 2to, 3blk, 0stl, 5 fouls
Johnson: 15min, 2pts (0-0 fg), 0reb, 1ast, 2to, 0blk, 1 stl, 5 fouls (1 tech)

Also really loved how Reed was consoling Johnson at the end. Showing leadership qualities.

Yeah, the Mahaney PG experiment needs to end. Maybe he gets there, maybe not until next year, but he needs to learn in practice and as a backup, not as a starter.

It’s not an argument. It’s an ironic observation. In no way am I suggesting Hurley behave like the fans.

The bad- point guard play throughout the game was awful but Hass showed a lot late. Samson was awful all game and did something a senior should never do in overtime. Hurley did something a coach should never do in overtime. Hurley needs to own the loss, he took away the chance to win from his players.

The good- Reed is a beast. Jaylin was great. Solo is a clutch flamethrower. Liam shook off a terrible game and drained huge shots and he was our leader out there, incredibly impressive from a freshman.

Refs were awful but it's hard to believe Hurley still does this stuff. I expect him to own it with his players and I expect it to galvanize the team. The whole program has been feeling themselves since the back to back. Bringing them back down to earth is a good thing.

And it wasn’t just the T. His substitution patterns were questionable at best. SJ was giving nothing, start Reed the 2nd half. APB for Stewie the 2nd half. What the heck was that?? Zone gave them fits, should have gone to it much earlier.

Saw a lot of the bad Dan Hurley today. I was hoping he had been permanently retired.
 
Easily the biggest loss from last year’s team was Newton. Right now we don’t have anyone who competently run the offense, and only 1/2 PGs can defend worth a lick right now.

A lot of mental errors on the staff and players. A lot to clean up. Probably a tougher coaching job for Hurley than either of the last two years.

Schedule someone other than West Cow Dick state university before Maui, too, please

That call was that bad and instead of giving Hurley more rope after botching the call they doubled down and grew rabbit ears and decided to ruin and decide an epic game. That crew should be nowhere near March Madness.
 
Mahaney not as advertised. He's a liability on defense. if he doesnt bring an offensive threat, then you need to take minutes away. This isnt just a single game slump. He's played like this since Summer ball. Stewart needs to take some of his minutes.

They're all feeling themselves too much. I guess that's what two of the four most dominant runs in tournament history does to you.

Hurley has done a million interviews and he hasn't been at all shy about talking about three-peating. He's getting all the recruits he wants. It's just been win after win for them on and off the court. I like the confidence but they've sort of been walking around like they're invincible and their s^^^ doesn't stink. I would've loved the improbable comeback win but it felt right we lost this way today.

I agree. Even if Hurley deserved the tech, you don’t give it there.
