We desperately need someone with a mean streak. Who was the baddest mofo to don the blue and white in the Calhoun era?

Sellers? Adrien? Donny? Selvie? Kirk King? K Free? Ricky? Khalid?

Lyman the guy has no mean streak. He played tough, but not what I'd call a mean streak.

The Bill Holowaty thing must have been in jest. He was hardly the Calhoun era, having graduated the same year I did, 1967 better known as the Cohenzone-Fred Shabel era. And he was not the mean streak kind of player either.

If "mean" suggests take no prisoners, Khalid had it from day one, and I don't know if it was because of him, but his championship team as a whole was maybe the toughest UConn team ever, way discounted for anyone who had seen them play a lot that year, when everyone else had Duke on the brain.

At my age, I'm happy I remember when I went to UConn, let alone who played on the team. And, of course, for any pre-Calhoun fans, yes Virginia, there was a Wes Bialosuknia.

Did Tim Coles play under Calhoun? He would get my vote.

Donny Marshall, in his own way. Plus it'd be good to have a halfway decent 3 on the team.

Toraino Walker (tough on the court but not tough enough to handle JC so he can't be the best ever), Donnie Marshall, Jeff Adrian, Rod Sellers, and Kirk King are all great choices. For a dark horse candidate, I'd throw Caron Butler in there. However, if I have to pick one I'd pick Jeff Adrian for his intensity, with Donny Marshall a close second for the way he battled and threw his body all over the court. Marshall was one guy who you never doubted would hit the floor or jump over the scorer's table after a loose ball.

Didn't know if you recall a game against St. john's when the johnnie player was inbounding the ball. Donny Marshall was guarding the inbound pass and decided to hit the guy's face. Wasn't sure what that as about but that was unexpected.

No one said "best ever". They said "meanest". If any of you ever went out drinking with Toraino and saw him get pissed off you know what i mean. That was one tough kid.

He's my fraternity brother...Chi Phi. Never thought of him as a smash-mouth player. That vote goes to Marshall.

The comparisons to Kevin Freeman come easy now for Calhoun, for everyone. They're Twin Gibraltars. They are heart, and they are fiber.
"Two guys who could win the national championship," Calhoun said.
Adrien likes the comparison to Freeman. No, that's wrong. Knowing how 1999 ended with UConn's first national title, Adrien loves the comparison. When asked Saturday what he wants his legacy to be, he had a simple answer.
"A warrior, just a warrior," Adrien said. "To be compared to Kevin Freeman is an honor. He was an ultimate leader. That 1999 team was my favorite team. I was in the seventh grade. That's when I realized I wanted to be a Connecticut Husky."
I wish Dyson stayed healthy. I really think, with him, they could have beaten UNC and given Adrien, AJ, Austrie, and Thabeet that title. It was a great run though.

Point taken. When I said 'best' I meant the top of the list of mean or tough players, not the best players because Toraino wouldn't have been top 50 from the JC era. Also, I was referring to on the court, not guys with the biggest beer muscles. I'm sure off the court there were some pychos that would surprise some people.
