McDonalds All-Star Game

Cooper was real good and the best part about her was that in a game where typically guards are ball hogs, she actually tried to pass the ball to her teammates (and probably why she had 9 turnovers). I was also impressed by the ND (especially Mayberry who seems a better player than her sister) and Louisville (Durr is a major talent) kids and the CAL post (who was the best post in this game but does seem to like to shoot from mid-range and miss...). The UConn kids seem perfect for UConn as it's easy to see the teamwork, fundamentals, hard work etc. that they have.

Finally able to sit down and formulate my notes from the games last night. Yes. Games. We stayed for the boy’s game after.
First off, a BIG THANK YOU to Walter the usher who ever so politely moved us to the second row because there was no one seated in that row. Center court, 2nd row for the women’s game was nice.
This is our 5th year going to the girl’s game and this one was an exciting. Just the offense display was exciting enough but the girls for the most part all played pretty even. Unlike last years game where Jordin Canada and Shakayla Thomas stood out, no one player stood out above anyone else.
When we got into our seats, the first player you notice when you look at the girls warming up was Kalani Brown and Deja Strother, both big girls on the floor. Also noticed how supportive the girls were of each other. Always clapping and yelling support. It was nice to see.
As far as the eye test for each girl I don’t think I can do that but I can tell you guys about the ones that stood out to me live.
First the UCONN girls. All 3 were great to me. KLS had some shooting struggles but she is tall and moves without the basketball. She got a few offensive rebounds and some assists. I think she will do well in the UCONN system. DJB played the least but had a couple of baskets and she too moved well without the basketball. Not sure if her wrist was bothering her or not. She fell to the floor a few times and I didn’t notice her grimace or favor the wrist at all. Speaking of the floor, NC was all over and on it. She didn’t light up the scoreboard with points but led the team in rebounding and it was obvious. She just has a nose for the basketball. This kid is going to be fantastic. These 3 will have a very good career at UCONN. Made me think of Jones/Cash/Williams except with an outstanding three-point shooter.
As for everyone else.
For our Duke Fans-you have a dandy in Kyra Lambert. She is lightening quick and a great passer. I see her as the starting PG next year easily. If she can learn JPM offense, the job may be hers.
Asia Durr---WOW! Talk about the it factor. She has it. You can see it in how she handles herself and how she plays. Louisville got a good one. Another good cardinal was Taja Cole. (Interesting thing about Cole she reminded me of current Louisville freshman Arica Carter).
The young Mabrey looks just like her sister but I felt like she has more of a dribble drive game instead of a stand and shoot guard.
Post Players—People may disagree and that’s fine but my favorite of the night was California signee Kristine Anigwe. She was tall, athletic and will be a great player for the Bears. She took a few too many high post shots for me but I liked her game.
Another good one is Ashley Hearn. Didn’t hear much about her recruitment (headed to UCLA) but she is long and lean. She too will be a great post player.
Kalani Brown started for the East and Beatrice Mompremier for the West. It took about 10 minutes before I realized they both are going to Baylor. (They already have a bevy of post players so I am not sure how that situation will work out).
Deja Strother is a big body much like Brown only a worse shooter. Strother missed some point blank layups. Both will need to do some serious conditioning prior to the start of the new season.
North Carolina got two great guards in Destinee Walker and Stephanie Watts. Watts was looking for her shot every time she was in the game. I would be shocked if she had any assists (when I checked box score she had 0..so got that one right and every fan in my area mentioned how she only wanted to shoot). She did get her team back in the game but there were many times she shot the ball with a wide-open player under or around the basket.
The Connecticut kid, I thought, was pretty good. Kiah Gillespie. Not sure why UCONN didn’t recruit her. Could be a position of need that Geno didn’t have. I trust the coaching staff but she looked really good.
Cooper had a bunch of points in the first half (couple assists from KLS) but she got to going to fast a few times and lost control of the ball. She had 9 turnovers but 3 of them were not really her fault so I give her the pass on that.
There were a couple of players that had some bad attitudes with their actions and feet stomping and pouting.
I am sure I missed some guys so please let me know if there is someone you want to ask about.

Its about time you showed up.... Ive been waiting all day for your scouting report on Lambert.

Its gonna be interesting next year to see who starts in the Duke backcourt. By all accounts Lambert seems like a good fit to start at PG.... but then their is Salvadores... I cant imagine someone that starts on a pro team.... not starting for Duke next season. I also cant imagine not starting Greenwell........ but that would slide Stevens over to the PF spot.... (I think she's better at the 3).

Do you see Walker and Watts getting lots of playing time for UNC next season?

Sorry. We got in so late last night after the boys game and by the time everyone was in bed & dog walked I was beat!

As far as Lambert goes I wasn't even thinking about Salvadores. Is she a PG? I dont know! Lamber played like another Texan you had for a while, Alexis Jones. She might not be the scorer but she is so quick and made some nice passes. With all those post players, Lambert could average 5-8 assists per game as a frosh.

Walker and Watts?? If I was a recruiting coach or a scout I would say Walker is the better of the two even though she didn't score as much. Watts seemed like a player that would look for her own shot first and that may well work in the Hatchell system. Walker actually was one of the few that played defense! What I thought was interesting is UNC got a couple of good guards but don't they need post players???

Highlights of Lambert online are few and far between.... I think Ive seen maybe 1 minute of her in action. As you UCONN fans would say.... Salvadores is just a guard. She can play PG.... she can play off the ball..... she can just play period. Yes UNC needs post players.... they signed a PF type out of Canada..... but they still could use size.... but... that's their problem.. not ours. :D

Interesting. Do you think she will start next season ?
She might. Worse case she splits minutes with Gray at 2/3 spots. She looks very much like a Gray clone to me slightly better handles.

As many indicated these games can be entertaining but not much of a barometer in projecting what a player's college worth will be. Years ago my husband took me to the Civic Center so we could get a look at this recruit from California called Taurasi who spent the "game" chucking up these 30-foot clunkers then looking up in the stands at her future teammates and laughing obnoxiously at her many misses. Sputtered all the way home convinced she was a selfish ball hog who would never fit into UCONN's team oriented style of play. Imagine that's why I don't post much on the Boneyard, 'cause truth be told, I don't know nuthin' !!!

Anyone record the McDonald's Girls All-Star Game that could put it on a DVD? I'll pay for DVD/Shipping whatever! I missed it, went brain dead, I guess! Thanks!

We the amount of depth we have I think its smart to start off with Salvadores, Becca, Azura, Oderah (if healthy), Cooper. Off the bench I go Belton, Henson, Lambert, and whichever guard stands out in the freshman class most likely Suggs. If Lambert trully is a pass first guard I would like her coming off the bench with the Duke underclassman to start the season off for confidence purposes for other players. Crazy that we can actually sub 5 in 5 out next year, but with the coach we have who rarely uses a bench in her 8 years at Duke idk. This upcoming season is VERY interesting.

I though Henson was calling uncle and graduating due to multiple injuries? I think Lambert & Suggs will surprise you and contend for starting spots.

Henson is returning and I'm excited because she has a good knowledge of the game. I'm a big Suggs supporter but honestly if Chidom is healthy there are 4 locks to be starters. Chidom, Azura, Becca, Salvadores.

Article on Collier that is also in the recruit thread:

“There's always stuff you can do better, but I thought I finished the season how I wanted to,” Collier said. “We won and we played great as a team. I don't think we could have ended it any better.”

This season, Collier averaged 13.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 4.1 steals and 4.1 blocks per game.

As far as just being in the conversation as to who is the best girls basketball player ever to grace a court in St. Louis, Collier said she is looking forward to making a similar impact for Connecticut.

“It makes me feel good, but like I said, it makes me want to work harder so I can say that at the next level, too,” Collier said.

Just watched the replay on ESPN3. Very interesting game, but caveat emptor: It's kinda hard to watch and enjoy, Weisbrod has a love affair with the sound of her own voice that borders on the pornographic, so if you're not too familiar with the players and you wish to know things like, "wow, who was that kid who just buried that 3?'" forget it because she'll be on a rant about something else and will be oblivious..
The UConn recruits were not the most impressive on the floor, but, of course, once they get in Geno's hands all that changes. Of the three, in brief flashes, the one who looked most like a Geno-style gritty player was Boykin, but all will be good, especially after some time in the weight room (which all three could use).
With respect how players develop at the next level, we now are really going to get a chance to see what kind of a coach Walz is...he's got three great and tough kids coming in.
Cooper is the real deal. She and Diamond are going to be truly formidable. It'll be interesting to see if Holly can do the job with them. I tend to think she can and will, but time will tell.
If you are so familiar with these high school girls that you don't need them identified by the announcers, you'll enjoy this one much more with the sound off.
