McDermott Retires

Great coach. Big loss for the league. There have been indications this was coming soon but I thought a couple more years for some reason. Enjoy the links!

He's only 61 so I imagine the new system has indeed worn him out. I hope he comes out and says that only because this is starting to be a trend with the better more experienced coaches and maybe the NCAA will realize how stupid this entire thing is now.
 
Hate to see him go(conference needs great coaches)

Love to watch him leave (constant thorn in UConn’s side since we came back to the big east)

Yeah but in a way he helped make Hurley’s teams better.

I agree. I assumed he would stick around two more years. I’m not sure where I got that idea. Good luck to Coach in his retirement.

Potentially bad for the league but if Huss was that good at High Point they may not skip a beat.

Who can blame McDermott though? While he wasn't making as much as Dan Hurley, he had to be paid multi-millions per year, so if he didn't blow it on drugs and Antoine Walker type investments he should be worth 10 or more million and should live like a king in Omaha while being rid of the NIL, revenue sharing and portal BS.

It's not like the cornfields of Nebraska are a fertile recruiting ground - plenty to be had. Not sure what the collective comparisons are.

They recruit the country/world. Are you under the impression Creighton and Nebraska are only recruiting high school kids from Nebraska?

Before Dan Hurley recruited better and figured out how to compete well against McDermott, I used to joke with my sister that Bob Sr would meet or talk in secret with Greg before games and provide the lowdown on how to beat his kid. The intention was to make Dan grow as a coach without intruding directly or obviously.

Mac was trustworthy in keeping things confidential, and gentlemanly in imparting the lessons experientially. It was nothing nefarious, instead it was more like Statler and Waldorf in The Muppets trading quips and hearty laughs before & after when the more experienced college coach would school the young one during his ascendency.

The height & girth mismatch between Greg & Dan made their on-court meetings more intimate & affectionate, reinforcing a mythology of elder & youngin', and the dynamic clearly spills over into how Mac is lauded within this thread.

Interesting that this decision & news came after DePaul topped the Central time zone subdivision of the Big East this season.

No im under the impression that a school down the road with 10x the resources just starting caring about CBB and they’re losing their generational head coach. Surely that will have no effect on them going forward

Nebraska could end up owning the state in college hoops, but it would take close to a decade of sustained success before they would begin to make a dent into moving the fan base, and it would take a generation before they could surpass Creighton in the eyes of those who fill CHI.

What does it matter if they're not competing for the same recruits and they have different fanbases?

Creighton is always top 10 in attendance.

If your argument is they're losing a great coach and you're not sure if their new guy will be as good a coach of course I undertand that. It's the case for every school replacing a great coach.

Related to this, Izzo told Hurley 2 years ago to seriously consider the Lakers job because of the shifting landscape in college basketball. We know Izzo hates all this new stuff.

Speaking with the Associated Press ahead of the Sweet 16, Izzo revealed that he told Hurley to consider the Lakers' offer very "seriously" because of how unstable the college landscape was due to NIL and the transfer portal, even if losing Hurley would have been bad for the sport.

"I told him to seriously look at it because I could see where college basketball was going," Izzo said. "But I said, I would hate to lose him because I think he's all that is right about college basketball. He cares about the kids. He cares about the game. He has to care about the game because of his dad."

He looked done to me all year long. Game got a lot harder for bag men once everyone was allowed to have a bag. It is what it is.

Huss is a good hire though. If this would have happened last year, Huss would have been considered one of the best hires out of the midmajors.
 
Nebraska's run in college hoop will likely last as long as Hoiberg coaches. Let's hope that's not true for Creighton. Based on Huss' success at High Point I don't think that will be the case. He's solid.

Creighton was the one team that you always knew would give UConn a serious game, even if there was a talent disparity. McDermott was a heck of a coach, always had his team prepared, and almost always had a balanced and dangerous roster even if some of the kids were under the radar.

The Big East will miss him.
 
Greg McDermott is my favorite coach in college basketball after Dan Hurley and I'm sad to see him go. I'll miss him giving UConn fits with his great coaching and I'll miss his sideline demeanor and the way he conducts himself. I liked watching the juxtaposition between fiery Jersey City Hurley and the enormous calm Midwest presence of McDermott. The guy is a true gentleman and you can tell the two of them have a bond.

Decent chunk of Creightons fanbase went to Nebraska and are known as Jayskers. Not saying the program is dead but if Nebraska cares to sustain its relevance in basketball I think we’re passed the peak of Creighton basketball.

Creighton just had their worst team in over a decade and they were still selling out getting their 17,000 fans while Nebraska had their best basketball season ever. I wouldn't worry about it.
 
Hate to see him go, this conference is desperate for competent coaching, now the established number 3 is out. Rooting for Huss to keep the ball rolling.

Farewell to Coach McDermott. Would have been fun to meet Creighton in the 2023 championship if the cards played out a little differently. It was so rewarding to finally overcome the Creighton blues and start winning against them. Enjoy the retirement!
 
McDermott was one of the first coaches to really understand the impact and opportunities from the NIL and Transfer Portal era. He was good, but he is not irreplaceable. Time moves on, and there will be new coaches, and maybe someone else will rise up.
 
McDermott is a very good one and will be hard to replace. Suppose it is good news for the Huskies as he has been a pain. Bad news for Creighton and the conference. Hope he enjoys his retirement as much as I am enjoying mine.
 
People are rightly focused on the McDermott aspect of this, but Alan Huss is a VERY good coach. Creighton is going to be a good team moving forward still. What Huss did at High Point is impressive
