Good move. Will be 35 HR hitting catcher in Yankee Stadium.

Two players, ages 28-29 seasons:
Player A - 889 PAs: .242/.315/.426/.741 WAR 3.0 (B-R) 4.4 (Fangraphs)
Player B - 961 PAs: .224/.316/.405/.721 WAR 4.3 (B-R) 4.7 (Fangraphs)

Player A was signed for five years at $17 million AAV.
Player B was signed for $17 million over TWO years ($8.5 AAV).

What makes Player A worth twice as much? Which would you take?

FWIW, Martin had a 4.3/4.1 WAR with Bucs at age 30. Last time McCann got over 4 WAR was 2008.

Can't argue against a 7-time All Star. But GO...when has he ever sniffed 30 homers?

McCann is a bit of a but a good offensive player. His self-appointment as the ultimate authority on all things baseball etiquette related will make him easy to hate . . .

You're right ex, he would have fit more in with the Sox!

I must say he's never been wrong when he's supported his pitchers and team in his authority related matters........at least the one's I've seen. Good to have someone who's not a pu**y on your team actually!

I'd take the one the Yankees signed because like GOUC I see a major upgrade on offense and power at a postion which has been lacking just that for quite a while. Good signing, maybe overpaid a little but so does everyone else for players these days. We could have multiple threads on this.......

Major upgrade over last year. But again points out weakness in the minor league system. Yanks have touted their catching prospects for the past several years as a system strength - Montero (gone), Romine, Murphy and Sanchez. Guess the team thought neither of the middle two would provide enough offense. Still hope for GS. I'd guess that one or two of Cervelli, Romine and Murphy are now on the trading block. Wonder if McCann has a no-trade clause?

Per one of the beat writers: NY has 5 catchers on its 40 man roster, not counting McCann (Stewart, Cervelli, Romine, Murphy and Sanchez). He guesses Stewart is gone, the middle guys fight for the back-up role, and Sanchez, still just 20, won't be ready until 2016.

Good pickup at a needed position. Now they have to find players to throw to him.
