Maryland beats Notre Dame

After watching the game I like UConn’s chances this coming Sunday as well as the Sunday after that….
This was a fun game to watch. There were multiple good WB games last night as well. After watching NC St/Iowa, what I took away is that Conn's team defense doesn't receive its due credit. Gene provided Wes Moore the blueprint to take away Czinano and that forces Iowa to rely on Clark. Although she is phenomenal - delivering 45 points, one player can't do it all. Also, UConn made her work harder for her 25 than did NC St. NC St looked much better than they did against UConn, but I'm unsure if it was due to playing Iowa or if they are slowly starting to jell. Last Rivers showed why she was one of the top players coming out of high school. She has talent.

ND is a talented team, but I question the so-called experts always doubting UConn. You would think after 38 years.... Although it is a home game for ND, they are coming off a loss, and it is UConn, I still feel UConn will win. As other posters have mentioned, Miles may get hers, but she is going to have to work for it. The same applies to Citron. Conn's defense, combined with their efficiency on offense wins the contest.

By the way, I'd like to see how UConn handles Ohio State's full court pressure. So far this season, OSU wears the other team down, but UConn is so well coached, I think they will find holes.

Didn’t UConn already play a team that was touted as having a devastating press? Texas, Nc State, Duke…?

Yes, last night's ND vs. Maryland game was a Thriller. Back n' Forth play, had many on the edge of their seats. Diamond Miller proved to the nation that she is an All American Athlete "On The Court" . I still don't think Brenda is a top notch D1 Coach. As for Notre Dame, Olivia Miles was a Non-Factor for 3 1/2 quarters, having a "DUD GAME". She didn't decide to "Turn It On" until the very end, when it was too late. Dara Mabrey "of 'The Mabrey Bunch' also had a horrible game last night. Westbeld continues to be a mystery. Ebo also had a horrible game. If it wasn't for Sonia Citron, this game would have been a blow out. I suspect that Coach Ivey is going to take this team out on the court today and tomorrow for some "Brutal Practices" like they haven't seen before, in preparation for Sunday's game vs. UCONN. I still love UCONN to beat ND by 8 or 9 points, but I fear we will see a much different Notre Dame team than what we saw last night.

Interesting game. 1st half, if Maryland wasn't so sloppy, should have pulled away from ND. Maryland doesn't appear to be well coached but won at the end of game just gaving ball to Miller who did great job using picks and going to basket. Miles was constantly driving to basket, using her long arms to throw layups over defenders. Good midrange game-not someone to make a mistake around. Will be a challenge for Muhl. ND does not appear to defend or shot 3's well, but they have Citron who is the real thing. Ebo is an interesting player - a Charles Barkley type who can't jump but is difficult to move under the boards. Will be surprised if ND can withstand UConn's defense and overall speed.

When does UCONN play Ohio St. ?

The main key to playing ND well is to hold down their best player and that is Citron. For those Boneyard defense experts, who do we put on her. Hold her to less than 15 and it becomes a no-brainer unless the refs take control of the game at ND. As someone mentioned in another thread, I do not like playing them with one day of rest and having to travel on that one day, especially with a short bench with only 2 subs and no Dorka.

They will come out hungry after the Maryland loss.

While I know that BY’ers have mixed feelings about MM, it’s hard to believe that a ND team coached by MM would have lost the game against MD last night on their home court. Niele Ivey has accomplished a lot in basketball, and she was MM’s handpicked successor at ND.

There are similarities between MM promoting Coach Ivey as her successor at ND and Pat Summit promoting HW as her successor at TN. Both actions were born out of loyalty to a valued assistant coach.

One can only wonder if ND had opened up the search for MM’s replacement, would the WBB program be better off with someone like Megan Duffy? Duffy has a ND pedigree, has worked her way up through the ranks in college basketball coaching and is now the successful HC at #24 Marquette.

Nothing wrong with Diamond Miller making the "Shush" sign. She just made a last second game winner, and earned the right to do that.
A ND fan wanted a technical on her. Ahh, a technical after the game is over would be a novel concept.

ND’s schedule so far has been weak. After they play UCONN on Sunday, they will play two more cupcakes before visiting ACC member VA Tech. Then they will play another cupcake before getting into their ACC schedule.

I like Sonia Citron. She’s a baller. I believe that if UCONN contains Olivia and Sonia, they will win the game. Olivia may have the same reaction and response that Caitlin Clark had after Nika was all up in her grill.:D On another note, what happened to Jenna Brown?? She’s not listed in the box score for the MD game. She’s averaging less than 9 minutes per contest, which is a little more than she has ever averaged in her career.

Great game winning shot by Diamond Miller. But Shushing the Notre Dame fans was classless. Geno would never tolerate his players showing up the opposing team or its fans.
Not so sure I was cool with Miles high diving that fan either, when she hit that bucket late in the game. She went to the hole soon after that and couldn’t get it to fall. Too much 1 on 1 BB which works at times but tends not to get you too far in the tourney.

No actually not a novel concept. I believe that happened to Syracuse last season. I do know that games have changed outcomes after the final whistle as the final score is not official until the refs leave the court.

When does UCONN play Ohio St. ?
UCONN does not play Ohio State this season unless the two teams were to meet up in the tournament. Ohio State is noteworthy this season for a couple of reasons 1) tOSU already have decisive wins against TN ( Top #10 at the time) and even more decisive win against Louisville in Louisville. 2) tOSU is top or near the top of NCAA ranking in some key defensive metrics 7th in Scoring Margin, 1st in Turnover Margin , 1st in Turnovers forced per game ...
These defensive numbers, should they continue, are rather scary for a future opponent because Kevin has never had a great affinity for the defensive of the ball. When you combine that kind of defensive effort with arguably the Nations' best backcourt duo of (Mikesell & Sheldon) they are going to be a tough out come tournament time.

Not going hard after Duffy and letting MM control the process (if they did) was a big screwup by the ND administration imo.

Allowed? Was she showing the UConn fans or the Tennessee fans?
I am talking about Duke. Someone else brought up Tennessee which after seeing what was posted I wouldn't really consider that taunting or gesturing towards the opposing team or its fans.

Dee did the “call me” thing then popped her jersey.

Guys do this stuff all the time. Only women (on other teams) are classles when they do it

That's a good question, and I'm no expert, but I'll ruminate on it. Related to your question is who will be marking Westbeld? I'd probably try initially Griffin on Citron and Lopez-Senechal on Westbeld. Citron is a good open-court player, so Aubrey is better-suited to that. But would Westbeld's size be too much for Lou?

Not exactly. Lots of novel concepts seem to come into play when UConn is involved.
Remember Rod Sellers being suspended for the first game of the NEXT YEAR because he pushed Christian Laettner's head down on the floor when they were scrambling for a loose ball in the NCAA tournament?

Not sure what to make of ND. They and SC are close with my "dislike" meter - but FAR behind Tennessee for me. So I love seeing them lose (ND). I didn't watch the whole game so I'm not sure about the interactions between Diamond and the ND fans.

It's easy for us to watch a 10 second clip and say "classless". But what did the fans say/do to her all game? I didn't see it all so I can't speak for it. Low class? Probably. Provoked? Maybe.

Some ND fans wanted a T? Seriously? The game was over and unlike football, there is no penalty for "excessive celebration".

Diana was famous during the Tennessee rivalry. "I just wanted to punch something orange" - she punched the stanchion after making a clutch play during the UCONN-Tenn game. And of course famously popped her UCONN jersey after we won. Classless? Opposing fans certainly thought so. Deserved? OF COURSE. I'd support Diana 100% and twice on Sunday for anything related to Tennessee.

As for ND, They are very talented. Miles and Citron are really good and Mabry is... well... a Mabry. Maybe not as good as her sister in the WNBA, but really solid. Westbeld is really good, but not sure about the other post player - Watson?

I thought maybe ND might be the 4th best team in the country behind SC, Stanford and UCONN, but now not so much. Maybe tOSU? Indiana? Iowa State? Va Tech? In spite of NC State getting clobbered by UCONN, they clobbered an Iowa team that gave us all we could handle. So who knows?

ND will NOT want to lose 2 games in a row. They will be UP for the game vs. UCONN. Whereas they lost to a solid, but not great, Maryland team, I expect them to play much better against UCONN, much like Iowa did (as opposed to how they played vs. NC State).

I think Aaliyah and Aubrey will be more than ND posts can handle. Miles vs. Nika is intriguing - hopefully Nika stays out of foul trouble. Azzi is a much better defender than I thought - so fundamentally sound, i think she guards Mabry and Lou goes on Citron. I think the guards for ND will be a lot to handle and I could see Lou getting into foul trouble. Caroline will be key IMHO.

We will see Sunday for sure.

I looked it up and NO TECHNICALS can be called after the game is ended. Any perceived infraction after the game is reported to the league office(s) for further action.

So MM never lost a close game? 15 years as an Assistant isn't working your way up and earning it? She has her team ranked, and she's a lightyears better recruiter.

Respectfully, MM left ND in shambles.
