Marquette Scouting Report

Gonna be interesting to see what they are next year as they lose Jones, Joplin and Mitchell.
And considering the fact that Shaka Smart never uses the transfer portal.

And considering the fact that Shaka Smart never uses the transfer portal.
If he doesn’t his starting lineup looks like:

Chase Ross - 2G - Sr
Ben Gold - 5 - Sr
Royce Parham - 4 - Soph

Then Sean Jones at PG, who will be coming back off injury, and maybe one of these seldom playing sophomores. Decent but unlikely to make much noise unless they hit the portal.

Someone needs to step up and prevent Cam Jones from driving to the basketball. Everything else is secondary.

.-.
Joplin did not have a career high.
I thought Gus Johnson said that after he hit a 3? Or were they talking about someone else? Were they talking about Ball?

Joplin is averaging 14.6 ppg and he scored 13 tonight. O.K. that was a dumb stat to post on my part! Lol

I edited my post.

The last month hasn't been kind to Marquette.

Marquette has dropped from 12th to 23rd in KenPom as Marquette's interior defense has been their biggest bugaboo.

4-4 over their last 8 games, Marquettes losses have been against stronger teams in the Big East (UConn, St. John's, Creighton and Villanova) while the wins have been against weaker teams (DePaul, Seton Hall, Providence, Georgetown), so Marquette really needs this win to build momentum entering the NCAA Tournament.

In their four losses during that span, Marquette has gave up 76.3 ppg and considering that Marquette's defensive weakness is in their frontcourt, keep feeding Reed and I look forward to see if McNeeley and Karaban can continue their strong play.

Tarris should be able to bury Ben Gold under the basket over and over if he comes out like he did versus Providence.
Tarris only played 13 minutes the first game, had 6 and 3. This would seem a clear advantage offensively but Gold will space him out defensively. I can see Hurley rolling our guy Samson back out there for big minutes and killing all the great momentum we will need out of Reed come March. Blind spot. Let’s see.

Marquettes last two opponents were also Gtown and PC so interesting to do a side by side.

Really excited for this matchup and hopefully a season sweep of Marquette! Get to the game if you can make it !! This team needs your support. You can sit a few rows behind the UConn bench for $150 total (will probably drop to at least $100 before the game). No excuses lets finish out the season strong!!!

Wish it wasn't such a late start tomorrow. I think this is a game that can get UConn off the 8/9 seed line. Really need to come out strong and win this game. I don't expect Reed can carry us this time, the shooters are going to need to hit some threes. Hoping we finally get an off shooting night from the other team for a change.

What's funny is we got a really bad shooting night from Marquette the first time we played them, or else there's a good chance we don't win that game.

Johnson was really effective in the first game vs. Marquette. The minutes split was correct there.

exactly. Marquette was missing their FTs that could have put game pressure on UConn.

Not that our mindset as fans has any bearing on the performance of UConn for this game, but I hope we as fans are not expecting an easy win because of that first game in Milwaukee. Of course, if UConn wins easily tomorrow then this post ages like milk and I am all for it.

That win was clearly a bit of fools' gold. We absolutely shot the lights out, and they couldn't throw the ball in the ocean.

i do think Johnson played well against Marquette in that first meeting and earned the playing time he was given. Johnson is more comfortable playing defense away from the basket than Tarris and Gould will be hanging by the 3 pt line.

Having said that, I do wonder if Tarris should get more playing time because Gould really is not that great of a 3 pt shooter, although UConn doesn't want to just leave him all alone to shoot 3s, but Tarris on offense can post up Gould and bully him and over power him. This would be create a good volume of 2 pt baskets at a good efficiency rate if Marquette doesn't double, but they surely will, which means Tarris can find open shooters at the 3 pt line. Basically UConn utilizing Tarris in the post against Gould will produce 2 pt baskets or passes for open 3s at a better scoring rate then Ben Gould can take advantage of Tarris on the perimeter.

The only other game in the last 7 that Johnson had more minutes was Seton Hall (where Reed looked asleep), so if we are following the trend I'd expect the split to be 25/15 in favor of Reed, barring foul trouble.

We turned the ball over 25 times, it’s not like UConn played out of their minds. It’s okay to just say they did what they needed to do to win without finding a reason to discount it.

See, even though Johnson was effective, it defeats a bit of what I'm hoping for as I would prefer this team to develop an identity with Tarris an a GUY, consistently and intentionally. I feel this gives them their best chance to win meaningful games in March. This back and forth with Samson is uninspiring, even if he has stretches of being effective. I repeat, Tarris is our most physically advantaged and talented guy on the floor at any given point, make him central and stop with the Samson back and forth. Go iron clad with your best players, make the opposition plan for them. Ride them through thick or thin and commit and if it's clear there is a matchup issue, spell as needed.

I see absolutely ZERO strategy where Samson is the better matchup to commit to going into a game unless we want to be the flimsy inconsistent team we've been all year. Develop an identity with your most physically imposing player as a nucleus, not an inconsistently used bench piece against a subpar loyalty 5.

Samson was perfect from the field and the line in the first Marquette matchup and we won the rebound battle by 10 even though he only grabbed 4. I don't think it's wrong to think he could put in a good shift again, but I also agree that he should probably only be getting 10-15 minutes in this one.

I just personally think getting Tarris to assert himself so we can have some semblance of an inside-out game is better for the team at this point. If teams have to send help into the paint, we have the shooters to capitalize. If they don't send help, Tarris will eat. I think he has the keys at this point as long as he can stay out of foul trouble.

Couldn't agree more. When you go into March, go in with your most talented players core to both sides of the ball. Win or lose, do it with your best players. He will be a reason we make a run, if we do. You got a handful of games left to commit and centralize him, do it. Running Samson out there my expectations go draino.

IIRC-McNeeley DNP due to injury- Those TO numbers would have been clearly affected with his help.

Yea but we also turned the ball over 25 times

Danny should park Reed under the basket rather than chase Gold out to the three point line. Reed's great at closing off the dribble drive and controlling the glass.

And Hass was playing on a half a leg. He's looked healthier the last couple of weeks, I don't think Nowell was active due to injury either

Yes the keys to why this game is different:
1. Haas is closer to 85-90% than 50% then.
2. Nowell can go 8-10 minutes as needed and does not turn the ball over much
3. Liam is starting instead of Stewart
4. Reed, Jr., is emerging as a bona fide big who will get us rebounds, put backs, and fouls on Gold.
5. But we won't shoot THAT good again - hopefully close
6. But they won't shoot THAT badly again - hopefully close
7. It's a home game - Gampel is a good +3-5 on the scoreboard.
8. It's March
