Stevie Mitchell is probably going to be the key to this game. If he locks up Solo, it's going to take a lot from the rest of our guys to beat a good Marquette team.

Tarris is a lot stronger and more physical than Gold, but considering how effectively Gold can shoot the 3, I still don't absolutely love the matchup.
Gould isn't a consistent dead eye shooter. But on defense Marquette won't leave Gould one on one in the post defending Reed. They will send help defenders to harass Reed when he gets the ball in the post.

With minutes that limited, a closely played game is a victory for us going forward, and I know that’s unacceptable to many here but let’s be realistic.

A victory is a victory. They’re not playing the Celtics.

It’d be really hard to beat this Marquette team on the road at full strength, so MU is rightly favored and the better team right now. But people making this out to be some David v Goliath scenario are going a bit overboard.

Tend to agree - Marquette does one thing really well and if we can fend that off there is no reason we can’t stay in this one. If we turn the ball over 15+ times we have no chance.

Yes, there is not any Goliath in the Big East this year. Last year you could argue, UConn, Marquette, and Creighton were the Goliaths as they got the 1, 2, and 3 seeds, respectively. I know Marquette is mocked by many bracketologists to be a #2 seed, but by Selection Sunday I can see them being a 4-5 seed.

Gonna be interesting to see what they are next year as they lose Jones, Joplin and Mitchell.

And considering the fact that Shaka Smart never uses the transfer portal.

And considering the fact that Shaka Smart never uses the transfer portal.
If he doesn’t his starting lineup looks like:

Chase Ross - 2G - Sr
Ben Gold - 5 - Sr
Royce Parham - 4 - Soph

Then Sean Jones at PG, who will be coming back off injury, and maybe one of these seldom playing sophomores. Decent but unlikely to make much noise unless they hit the portal.

Someone needs to step up and prevent Cam Jones from driving to the basketball. Everything else is secondary.

Chase Ross is average so might as well pencil him in for a career night
Called it. And Joplin with a career high. But the Huskies responded with a win! Nice game!

Joplin did not have a career high.
I thought Gus Johnson said that after he hit a 3? Or were they talking about someone else? Were they talking about Ball?

Joplin is averaging 14.6 ppg and he scored 13 tonight. O.K. that was a dumb stat to post on my part! Lol

I edited my post.

The last month hasn't been kind to Marquette.

Marquette has dropped from 12th to 23rd in KenPom as Marquette's interior defense has been their biggest bugaboo.

4-4 over their last 8 games, Marquettes losses have been against stronger teams in the Big East (UConn, St. John's, Creighton and Villanova) while the wins have been against weaker teams (DePaul, Seton Hall, Providence, Georgetown), so Marquette really needs this win to build momentum entering the NCAA Tournament.

In their four losses during that span, Marquette has gave up 76.3 ppg and considering that Marquette's defensive weakness is in their frontcourt, keep feeding Reed and I look forward to see if McNeeley and Karaban can continue their strong play.

Tarris should be able to bury Ben Gold under the basket over and over if he comes out like he did versus Providence.
Tarris only played 13 minutes the first game, had 6 and 3. This would seem a clear advantage offensively but Gold will space him out defensively. I can see Hurley rolling our guy Samson back out there for big minutes and killing all the great momentum we will need out of Reed come March. Blind spot. Let’s see.

Marquettes last two opponents were also Gtown and PC so interesting to do a side by side.

Really excited for this matchup and hopefully a season sweep of Marquette! Get to the game if you can make it !! This team needs your support. You can sit a few rows behind the UConn bench for $150 total (will probably drop to at least $100 before the game). No excuses lets finish out the season strong!!!

Wish it wasn't such a late start tomorrow. I think this is a game that can get UConn off the 8/9 seed line. Really need to come out strong and win this game. I don't expect Reed can carry us this time, the shooters are going to need to hit some threes. Hoping we finally get an off shooting night from the other team for a change.

What's funny is we got a really bad shooting night from Marquette the first time we played them, or else there's a good chance we don't win that game.

Johnson was really effective in the first game vs. Marquette. The minutes split was correct there.

exactly. Marquette was missing their FTs that could have put game pressure on UConn.

Not that our mindset as fans has any bearing on the performance of UConn for this game, but I hope we as fans are not expecting an easy win because of that first game in Milwaukee. Of course, if UConn wins easily tomorrow then this post ages like milk and I am all for it.

That win was clearly a bit of fools' gold. We absolutely shot the lights out, and they couldn't throw the ball in the ocean.

i do think Johnson played well against Marquette in that first meeting and earned the playing time he was given. Johnson is more comfortable playing defense away from the basket than Tarris and Gould will be hanging by the 3 pt line.

Having said that, I do wonder if Tarris should get more playing time because Gould really is not that great of a 3 pt shooter, although UConn doesn't want to just leave him all alone to shoot 3s, but Tarris on offense can post up Gould and bully him and over power him. This would be create a good volume of 2 pt baskets at a good efficiency rate if Marquette doesn't double, but they surely will, which means Tarris can find open shooters at the 3 pt line. Basically UConn utilizing Tarris in the post against Gould will produce 2 pt baskets or passes for open 3s at a better scoring rate then Ben Gould can take advantage of Tarris on the perimeter.
