Interesting stats - Prior to today, Marquette's stats were as follows, with today's results in parens:

72.3 ppg (45)
54.5 opp (77)
17.8 mov (32)
30.5 3-point FG pct (14.3)
26.6 opp 3-pt FG .266 (33.3)
5.6 3 pt per game (3)
4.6 opp 3 pt per game (9)

  • UConn had 4 players in double figures (Paige, Azzi, Sarah, KK), where Marq had one.
  • We went 12-12 from FT line.
  • Paige, Azzi had under 30 mins, Sarah was only one with 30+.
  • Assists on 22/28 makes (78.6%)

Many years ago, blowouts seemed fun, and the execution of offense was amazing. Now, I want the team to sustain leads, no matter who's playing.

It was a good game! Only 5 turnovers, 4 players in dub figures, perfect from the line, and held a team about 20 below their avg. Shooting could be a lot better. Thought Jana is starting to “round the corner”.

I’d like to acknowledge the defensive game Paige had. Skylar Forbes was pretty much wearing us out in the first half. In the second half, Paige matched up against her defensively and shut her down. Paige is simply the best all around player in the game today

Admittedly not a perfect game but there was definite improvement in this game over a much better team than Providence and on the road.

It’s amazing how much better the team looks when a decent number of threes fall
Paige and Azzi 28% combined shooting percentage. Say what you wish, Paige is in some kind of funk

Loved this game. The presence of Azzi is what this team needs. The Big 3 shot terrible (actually SS shot well but the 3 combined not well.) but the team was able to score easily enough. Have to wonder now and in the future if the presence of Azzi can help Jana score more efficiently and allow KK to have more chances of getting in the lane with less help from the Defense, along with giving Chen the easy looks she gets to turn her from her past of a volume scorer to an efficient player.

And kudos to JEA; 2-2 from the Free throw line. If she can't hit her free throws then it means you can't give her the ball late in close games.
By the way, KK, Chen, Sarah and Azzi had 18 assists and zero turnovers. Throw in Ash and Q for another assist each and no turnovers. Yet Paige had just 1 assist and 2 turnovers. Is it time to bench Paige? haha just kidding!

Few Thoughts:
While not a great game by UConn, a good win against a team which is probably one of the better BE teams and on the road.
Rebounding: must get better
What was with that rim in the second half...about 5 shots went in and than out
With that one strange line up that Geno had for about 2 min. of only freshmen and sophomores it looked like Morgan was the one talking in the huddles.
Considering that Paige and Azzi had poor shooting games, a nice win by UConn.
Defense was great again and it is clear that this is the identity of UConn this season.
Forbs is a real nice player! basically had a way with UConn till Paige took her as a defensive assignment and silenced her.
IMO part of the issue with Jana is lack of conditioning...with that said, she clearly is way better than Ice in most parts of the game. This game was a step in the right direction and hopefully she continues to grow.
I actually liked Geno's subbing frequently, giving all players some good minutes.
KK was a beast in a game where she could use her speed and go to the basket. Still need to get a reliable 3 point shot to make a real difference on offense against the best teams on the country. On defense, she sure makes life for the player she is guarding miserable.
When the 3rd quarter started with Marquette controlling the game, i thought: here we go again :(
It is a real treat to watch Sarah Strong. An amazing player!
Was so happy for Allie to hit those 2 shots in the end of the game!
The home fans of KK and Allie saw them having good games.
On to Villanova!

Not very good, I don't think, but a whole lot better than the previous game. KK is starting to show up as the person who ignites the team. Funny, I thought that was what Paige was supposed to do. And speaking of, Paige and Azzi looked no better than okay. As the previous poster said, Sarah was Sarah, which is pretty damn good. And who knows about Jana? She seemed more aggressive than in previous games, but got nailed with four fouls, only three, IMHO, were actual fouls. She is a work in progress and at last, we are seeing progress.

Some thoughts on the Marquette game;
  • HAPPY NEW YEAR TO THE BONEYARD!!!
  • For the 2nd game in a row UConn’s starting lineup includes Jana at center. While there were some head scratching plays, on balance the effort was better today. It’s a long and slow process that hopefully pays off BIG in March.
  • Kaitlyn & KK combined to have a really good all-around game sharing the PG duties today: 20 pts, 10 assists, 8 rebounds,
  • I really love the way UConn employs their pressure defense. Soft pressure to start the game, just to speed things up a little and give opponents something to think about. Then the Huskies crank it up, forcing opponents to scramble. I have this vision of a boa constrictor slowly choking the air out of their prey. UConn forced 21 turnovers in today's game.
  • In prior years, Geno has been criticized for his reluctance to substitute more freely. Not so this year. It’s actually difficult to keep up with all the lineup changes he rolls in and out.
  • The Huskies did a much better job defending the arc today, holding Marquette to 3/21 from the 3-pt line.
  • Rebounding continues to be a problem for UConn, as they were outrebounded today 41 to 33. Last season, Aaliyah and Nika were both beasts on the boards, and Paige picked up her share playing at the 4. UConn can’t always count on winning the turnover battle or outshooting their opponents. Once the calendar turns to March, the Huskies are going to have to do a much better job on the boards. Can you say "Aubrey Griffin?"
  • Next up, a visit to Philly to face the Wildcats. GO HUSKIES!!!
Nice write up. The “holding from the 3 point line” I usually think can maybe be giving too much credit to the D if a team misses a bunch of wide open shots. Not quite like good foul shooting D, but sort of the same idea. But since the 2nd half of the USC game, the D has been way more aggressive and definitely affects 3 point shooters, even if just hurrying open shots.

Paige and Azzi shot like crap, but …

Sarah got her usual 15/7/4 rather quietly.

Jana had 10 on 8 shots and looked good.

We had 25 bench points.

KK doesn’t need to make threes, but layups and FTs are important.

Q4 was better than Q3.

Better than the Providence game, with a MOV of 32 on the road.

Definitely a step forward.

Going into it, if someone were to have told us that Paige and Azzi would only shoot for a combined 7 for 25, and Sarah just an average production night of 15; how many total points would we have expected?

And yet, we come out with a 32 point victory on the road! There are definitely some intangibles that this team has!

One correction - Jana had double figures (10 points), not Azzi. Azzi had 8 points.

Yes she looked more comfortable. You can see she has what it takes, needs to relax a little. Good game for everyone.

I agree with all of this, but the rebounding isn’t going to get better with all the four guard sets. There were approximately 28 minutes with four guards today.

Much more enjoyable game than the PC game. Very little to "nitpick" about, but I have a few things after the shout outs...
  • Really terrific game from KK. Her defense and ball pressure is fierce. I still cringe whenever she shoots a 3 ("NOOOOOoooo") but she has great vision for gaps in the defense for her drives. Kudos to Kait for her solid play as well. Both bring completely different things to the table.
  • Signs of life from Jana. I wonder what her stats might have looked like if not for that unfortunate fall. She was back in the 2nd half but "only" logged 15 minutes.
  • Sarah continues to shine. Currently she's on my 10 player AA list. She's special.
  • Allie continues to show fearlessness. Her defense is "adequate" (meaning it's not horrible), but when shots are falling, she's a great addition off the bench. Maybe not in big games, but she's only a freshman.
On the flip side...
  • Neither Azzi nor Paige shot well. Sure it's great having them on the floor together, but a forgettable offensive game for the duo
  • Ash simply has to find a way to put the ball into the basket. He's a tenacious defender and her fitness is much improved, but IMHO she will slide down the depth chart if she cannot contribute offensively.
  • It's pretty clear why Jana is starting and Ice is not. It continues to mystify me how Ice was ranked in the top 5 coming out of HS.
  • The rebounding was a mess. A few times 2 or 3 UCONN players would be going for the ball, only to lose it to a Marquette player. A troubling trend that will kill us against bigger, or quick/athletic teams.
  • The slow starts are frustrating. Both halves showcased this. Sure they showed signs of life and ended Q1 nicely, but it killed them getting down so much so fast to USC - subsequently having to try to battle back in the 2nd half only to come up short.
I think this team has a LOT of room to grow. More than most teams out there. I'm also excited to see what Aubrey brings when she comes back. If she's the Aubrey we remember, I can see her 1st or 2nd off the bench. Hoping for the best with her...

Solid win. I will take it. Happy to see the solid defensive effort and energy out there. Jana made some strong moves out there and will only get better. Hopefully whatever injury she was dealing with out there does not sideline her for any long stretch of time. She is going to be a joy to watch as the season progresses.

KK had one of her strongest games. She was finishing well and her defensive intensity is never in doubt. Well done, KK!

I am just happy that we won the quarter battles. The 3rd was close but in the end we won all four quarters. Well done.

.-.
A very good win.

The defense was there the entire game. That type of pressure is goingf to wear down a lot of teams.

Kudos to Jana. Good game and good improvement. She is showing she has the post moves. This was her 13th game at this level. She will get better.

Sarah being Sarah. Steady and consistent the entire game.

KK - that was point guard play we have been missing. We need more of KK every game.

Today was probably the best ball movement we have seen this season. 22 assists and 28 made baskets. Impressive stat.
Much better than the Providence game. A couple of items; why have we not heard anything about Morgan's injured hand and does the injury and wrapping affect her shooting?

Does anyone else notice that Sarah has become more of a screener the last few games and less of an offensive threat. She is passing up open shots that she was taking (and making) before the school break. I want the old 20-25 point Sarah back. I have to believe that this change is being dictated and maybe for valid reasons such as finding a 3rd scorer.

KK was good. And has been gone for several games in a row now. I think her quickness will really stand out against big east opponents. And we saw that today.

Geno after the game talking about lineups. Again. And I just think we are hoping we get Aubrey back and hoping she makes the difference when it comes to lineups. The lineup UConn used at the end of the third quarter. I have no idea what Geno was hoping to achieve with that lineup. Not a single shot creator was on the floor. That lineup played hard and avoided getting run over by Marquette. So, they at least deserve credit. But still. I don't know what Geno was thinking.
I thought the same. I guess it was who would be willing to take a shot?

Many years ago, blowouts seemed fun, and the execution of offense was amazing. Now, I want the team to sustain leads, no matter who's playing.

Many years ago they didn't let them play like the roller derby. There is no more pretty offense anywhere. Just hurl yourself at defenders like ND, USC and SC do and try to get the foul call. We don't play like that which is one reason why we are near the bottom in FT attempts.

Don't care if KK and Jana start, as long as they get 20+ minutes. They each do more things than Chen and Brady. Re Jana and fouls: seems like she is just a very big, awkward kid at times, gets tired, and falls on people. When she matures into that size she might really be something else. Not as strong in the 2nd half , only because the coaches had her doing an Ice imitation at the top of the key, rather than being down low.
