Have to pay attention to how the other top 10 teams performed the weekend. This was a very bad loss and could drop us to a 3 seed. I believe if we get to the BET final with SJU and win then it would be hard for them to deny us a 2 seed. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be surprised if they drop us to a 3 seed.

The only thing more exhausting than watching yet another team play an A+ game against us with bad shooters turning into Steph Curry while we concurrently suddenly can’t make wide open shots, is the knee-jerk race to the bottom with people here concocting ridiculous narratives about what a bad team this is. Stuff happens. It’s college basketball. Neither this game nor the Creighton game changes my opinion on what this team is capable of, because we already beat one of the “favorites” and barely lost to another while missing two critical players, and destroyed St John’s. We didn’t mysteriously forget how to play basketball, these two games were just more of the same types of conference games that we’ve seen every year for a while now, including during two championship seasons.

This still might not be rock bottom.

In my opinion, the team's construction is fundamentally flawed.

I think this thread illustrates perfectly the dangers of microanalysis. Let’s summarize:
1. It was Danny’s fault. A coach goes 27-4, wins 2 consecutive natty’s, turns down the lakers and Kentucky in same offseason, yet people on here still believe they know more than him and point fingers the moment something unexpected happen. Got it.
2 Braylon Mullins is overhyped. Mocked in the lottery in a very deep draft everywhere. Yet all he does is heave three’s. Sure guys. The kid is elite and is playing within the system, not complaining at all(like Steph) yet he isn’t the player some of you thought? Got it.
3. Solo should be benched and start Ross over him? Brilliant. Let’s take the one kid who can regularly get his own shot off the dribble off the floor and put in an energy guy with almost no offense. If you want to see more turnovers, less scoring, and more stagnant sets, then fine but this is insane. Danny knows what Ross gives. Danny also knows the ceiling of solo and what he gives, and guess what, it’s more beneficial to get solo rolling no matter how late than give up on him to start a kid with limited upside . Got it.

It was a brutal game, a worse result, and one the team will now own forever. What a shame. They deserved better given the overall body of work, but got what they deserved in yesterday’s moment. It happens. Get over it and hope for better in Thursday.
I can’t see what danger there is in a bunch of us couch potato coaches over analyzing a bad loss. I thought over all this thread was quite sane.

1. Hurley has shown he can become unhinged which is bad. Great coach, but extremely disappointed in his lack of restraint. I also have said all season that he has mismanaged the bench. He realizes his mistakes but continues to make them.

2. Mullins has shown flashes of what we expected from him, but yes he has been a disappointment so far. Many here keep up the narrative that had Mullins and Reed been available for Arizona we would have won. It has to be very debilitating for those that still hold on to that. It is hard for some of us couch potato coaches to see unrealistic expectations shattered.

3. I was surprised there wasn’t more of the start Ross or Stewart posts here. Maybe another thread for that will spark up, but perhaps that bubble has burst as well?

This team with its coach is what it is. I am just going to enjoy this team and cheer them on. They will not be a top dog going in to the NCAA tournament, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t still win it all. I prefer being the underdog anyway. We did it many times before. Time we do it again.

Agree with much but not 3. I mean #3 is exactly where we need to hit the portal and hit it hard. This team lacks a 6’7-6’9 guy who can make plays off the dribble and get his when we need him to. Any that will be in the FF and Elite 8 will have that potential guy. Neither Ross or Stew are that guy or even close but they are great pieces, needed.

Let’s see what happens, as I’ve said already no matter where this team is seeded they will play a team who can beat them in game 2. Getting to the 2nd weekend will be a victory for me.

1 - Hurley has blind spots and is emotional, not only with the refs. Great coach but isn’t immune to some analysis.

2 - Mullins had high expectations as our scorer, more than a role player.

We are nowhere even remotely close to a 3 seed. All of the other 2/3 seeds have been losing consistently for weeks. There was a huge gap between UConn/Florida and the other 2 seeds. The gap is smaller now but we're going to comfortably be a 2 seed

Interesting to see how miserable people seem about our season right now compared to the predictions in this thread where most people had us exactly where we are right now

It's because of how we look. We played our best basketball three months/three months+ ago and we just played our worst basketball of the season to a 11-19 team to lose the Big East (a conference that is worse than any of us expected going into the season.) The team had three goals to start the season and they just failed at the first one. The record isn't going to matter unless we bring home some hardware.

I think a lot of fans feel how Dauster feels about this team, I know I do.

I guess that's their (and your) right. If people can't enjoy a 27-4 season because they can feel a loss coming in the Elite 8 or Final 4 I think that's really sad, but to each their own. That seems like a miserable way to go through life as a sports fan

Speaking of guys who can make plays off the dribble. I didn't realize Nigel James is from Long Island. Anyone know if we looked at him coming out of HS?

Last 5 games (through the Creighton L):

Silas: 10.1 PPG on 35.1%
Solo: 10.0 PPG on 34.1%
Braylon: 12.8 PPG on 38.3%
Karaban: 10.6 PPG on 45.4%
Reed: 14.4 PPG on 64.6%

Pretty easy to see what the offense should be centered around
And yet, let’s chuck up 23 3s and make just 3 while getting our 65% shooter a grand total of 10 shots

Smart

We have two more chances to make this a successful season.

They obviously don't have to be national champions for it to be a successful season but they have to collect some hardware or it's a failure for the season based on the team we have and what the expectations are. Win the Big East tournament and make the Elite 8 and it's a successful season. Lose the Big East tournament and make the final 4 it's a successful season. Lose the Big East regular season, lose the Big East tournament and only make the sweet 16 and no way is that a successful season given the team and the expectations.

Marquette took away Reed in the second half. That's why we had so many threes. We didn't make them pay for that decision. It was also the cause of many of our TOs as we looked for a solution to get Reed the ball and couldn't find one.

“They keyed on certain things with the zone, they made it tougher to get it to Tarris, they keyed in on AK, and the ball found Braylon and Solo for a lot of good 3s. Just, they didn’t make them,” Hurley said

We didn't abandon Reed. He was taken away.

Hurley and the staff want to feed Reed. You know that because commonly after a timeout or period of not getting it to him enough they go right back to it. He also talks about how important it is. I’m a big Silas fan but a lot of this is on how he operates the offense

Or game 1.

We will absolutely screw up Las Vegas in this tournament. We can finish anywhere from out 1st game to winning it all. And it doesn't depend on who we play, or where, or when. Only depends on which team we have shows up. I've never felt so schizophrenic.

For good or bad, the bar for this program isn't a good regular season record. It's not as though this team has played beautiful, fun to watch basketball this year. It's been quite the opposite. They just incurred what was likely the most embarrassing loss in UConn reg season history. This reg season hasn't been a win.

They have a chance to make up for it, but no one is looking back on this season as a good one with a second place finish, no BETC and a first weekend exit.

You want to see teams develop, get better, not regress. What players have actually gotten better this year? Maybe Ross. It's been a developmental wall. Some players got worse - Solo, Malachi, Stew. I'd say if this team flames out in the tourney, it will leave a lot of doubt to where the staff is in maintaining momentum with the program after last year.

.-.
I kind of skipped ahead in the thread but I really can’t stand people saying the head coach “can’t make an open shot or play D”. That’s such a classic head in the sand response. It is the coach’s job to make sure his team is ready to do those things. Dan Hurley is 150% aware of this. He doesn’t make excuses and you don’t have to either. He builds and develops the team. The buck stops with him and he’s always embraced that. He’s a great coach with a flawed team again this year. He will seek to build a better mousetrap for next season.

Despite all that, this team has the horses to go very deep in the tourney. If there’s a coaching staff to make it happen, we’ve got it. We need to shoot well, we need to feed the post and Tarris has to convert. We also need to make free throws. It’s a big ask but it’s possible.

He said the same thing last year, too.

I’d like to think that we’re bringing in two above average athletes and will make it a point to bring in an athletic 4, 5, and 1. You also can’t put a team out there with basically one player who can take someone off the dribble. Going on two years of that, too.

It’s really surprising that we ended up in this position the last two seasons because Hurley’s successful teams, both at UConn and before, were extremely athletic. Athleticism and toughness were his calling card. I think he might’ve got a little too caught up in recruiting shooters in an effort to look a little more like a typical Duke team once he earned the attention of 5 stars However, he failed to grab a couple guys that can jump out of the gym and get to the rim.

You wonder why UConn is never considered a Blueblood? If Duke or Kentucky doesn’t make the final Four the season is a failure. Hey at least we got a shot, so does Miami of Ohio!

Ugh. We’re definitely there. We win the national championship 25% of the time since 99’. We are definitely a final four or bust fan base.

Don’t discount what you are saying. However, we have been disrespected by the committee in the past and they will do so again if given the opportunity.

Terrible coaching. Awful shooting. Idk what they were doing in the second half..looked like going through the motions. Hopefully they got that awful shooting performance out of the way. And we can make some noise in the Big East Tournament. No reason we cant win the whole thing. But who knows what team will
Show up??
