Marquette Post Game Thread

19 points on 31 shots from Ball/Mullins/Karaban. Ineffective bench. Inability to adjust in games. Reed dominant and then disappearing. Same old story this year.

This team is much closer in many ways to last year’s than the two prior to that.

They better come to play in the BET. The public perception of the BE sucks this year and perception dictates seeding when it’s borderline sometimes.

Opposite for me. Getting older and going through a lot worse things in life makes sports seem trivial. I enjoy watching and get a little annoyed at losses for a few minutes then I move on.
Plus, this program has six national championships. Six. That's insane, considering where we were in the 1990s, and how bad those agonizing regionals losses to Duke, Florida, Mississippi State, etc. stung at the time, because we'd never even made a Final Four. We're in a totally different world now, with legendary program status. If after so much validation and banner-hanging you can't just sit back and enjoy it year to year for as long as it lasts, and just roll with the punches like today's game, I don't know what to tell you.

Can’t shoot 3-24 from three and expect to win. We were only down by 2 when three of our best players were a combined 6 for 31.

Also, I don’t like to blame the refs but the game was physical and there were a lot of no calls that should have been fouls. Hurley was getting at the refs all game and I agreed with it. Whether or not that was a foul at the end didn’t matter - if other obvious calls were made the rest of the game that last play wouldn’t have been needed.

Just a brutal game for pretty much the entire team offensively
Reed played well and was the best player by far for UConn. Silas played solid. Yes he had some sloppy plays but he is the only one trying to initiate offense when the play breaks down. Ross was okay and provided some good energy plays along with some sloppiness.

The play from the rest of the players in this game was straight garbage.

I think we need to face up to the fact that this team may not make it to the Sweet 16. It is far, far too easy for committed opponents to turn these guys over; I chuckle every time Hurley compares Demary to Newton in terms of what he's looking for in a floor general. Demary is about as far from TN as Stamford, CT is from Ulan Bataar, Mongolia. Whatever they are paying this kid it is far, far, far too much.

We beat some good teams in the non-conference before those team were fully formed, and in the case of Kansas turned out to be just not good. I think a second matchup with Florida or Illinois would produce a significantly less favorable result.

Add to that the Big East is just not very deep and you get a nice, shiny surface record that hides the garbage churning beneath the surface.

I said it after the Creighton loss-Hurley has some real soul searching to do this off-season regarding how he builds rosters. There are a bunch of guys on this team who are far too inconsistent or outright dead weight. If that means finding more NIL money in the banana stand, then that's what he's going to have to do. But if we want to keep competing for Big Prizes he has got to better than two or three guys that are capable of consistently scoring in double figures, and much better in terms of guys who don't handle the basketball like a live grenade.

He may believe that defense will carry in the tournament; but you also have to score as the refs are just not going to allow teams to muck up the proceedings like they do in the Big East. And I don't think these guys are capable of playing any other way.

By our, and Hurley's standards, this is just a bad basketball team.

Hurley is an balloon knot. There was no excuse for behaving like that at the end
A "ballon knot" ok I get why it seemed like too much, but there’s context. Hurley had been watching the same grabbing and physical play go uncalled all night, and that final no call on Demary wiped out a legit chance to tie it in the closing seconds. The reaction was a full game of frustration boiling over, not something random. And honestly, making that point now could carry some weight when it comes time for the BE tournament.

This is why you have Tarris Reed. When you can’t make an outside shot you have to get the ball inside.

When they play the zone you try to flash Silas the foul line to make a play/distribute. Stewie would have helped from that spot as well as he feeds the post well.

The team looks flawed. We’ve known that all along. That doesn’t mean that they won’t make a run and win the national championship. We are still a lot better than most teams. The Big East knows how to beat us and they give us all they have. We’ll see what this team is made of in the tourney. I’m skeptical, but I’ve been skeptical before and been VERY wrong. Even last season, we almost took out UF. We’re well coached and we have players. Let’s hope the March magic is on its way. Gotta move on.

One would think that shooting so horrible that guys would look to drive and score more had the advantage on the boards all game but nope kept jacking 3s
Aside from Demary they don’t have a single player that can do that. We’ve prioritized shooting to the extreme. And I think teams have figured out their intricate offense a little bit better, so we don’t get as many easy buckets either.

Reminds me of the ‘06 team. That squad had a lot more talent but the same penchant for inconsistency and playing down to the opposition’s level.

The 06 team played in a big east that put this years to shame and never lost to a team as bad as the one we just lost to (which a championship on the line)

Yeah this loss really sucked, but this team reminds me of the 2006 team. It has a gaudy record like that 2006 team, but I just don't have pure confidence with this team.
Worst loss since NM St. This was a last place team. Spare me on the 27-4 angle, we have a target on our back stuff.

Been saying it for awhile, but it's the same team as last year, plus Silas. Silas a very good player, but not a conductor. Hass wasn't the player Silas is, but team felt much more connected offensively when he was healthy.
They are what I thought they were.
Low BBIQ bb team. What was AK doing in the back court on that last possession? He's supposed to be this decorated floor general, but you see plays like that and inbounds plays and it's all head scratching.

Abandoned Tarris yet again, when it was all that was working because our entire offense is slinging threes and they weren't dropping today. This is where your PG needs to see that and make sure he gets touches.

Our bench....... Ross contributes buy egads with Reibe and Smith. Why Reibe couldn't show something against Ben Gold. He was -13. Hurley needs to really find a good alternative at the 5 to Reibe for next year. Been a Reibe fan, but it feels like he's regressed.

Solo does no little things well. We have another year of that coming.

Danny recruiting or bringing back all these shooters, imbalanced roster building. We don't need stand up shooters 2-4. Find us a Nigel James level player. Marquette look well set up for next year with a core of Parham, Stevens and James.

Let's finally put to bed the November wins as a point of reference.

Losing this game told me straight up Dan Hurley has no rabbits in his hat. This team is very much what it is.

Well. The regular season is over. We are what we are. Capable of a game like the last St John’s game here or there but, in reality, play most nights in some ugly slog against inferior opponents.

No hiding the warts anymore or hoping for some magical turning point to happen.

This is pretty much where I’m at. All the posters in here who say we aren’t getting out of the first weekend love being negative because that’s their schtick. But deep down we all know we have no idea how this team will respond. When you think we’re falling, we pound Nova and beat St. John’s 72-40. When you think we figured it out we lose to crappy Marquette. No one knows and that’s probably the most frustrating part

UConn didn’t deserve to win either. The scoring droughts they went on in this game can’t happen. Hopefully this will motivate them and they will play better in the tournament.
