I thought this worked well also as the advantage is his ability to see over their pesky defenders and get the ball up the floor versus getting swallowed. You realize what an advantage it was having Newt there last year.

I liked the inbounds play towards the end of the game where Ross inbounded to Alex, ran down sideline, took the handoff from Alex, and brought it up over the half court line. Size & quickness helped made it happen where it may not have worked as well with one of our smaller guards.

Admittedly I was moderately limited in seeing the game, had it on the TV but my wife had invited 3 neighborhood couples over, so I had to be a “good“ host .

Nonetheless, was able to watch a little, and I’ll watch the full game later today.

First, outstanding win. Beating Marquette on the road without McNeeley and with 25 turnovers is amazing work. The tone was set early with Diarra then Stewart nailing 3’s

The MU drivers were able to get to the rim somewhat, and they shot 3’s better than I thought they could 2nd half. Seemed like every time I looked up they nailed one. Despite that, I thought the defense looked much better. Everyone was moving their feet and staying in front of their guy. Switching on all the screens seemed to frustrate Marquette. Ross and Johnson were really solid. Much improved on D.

Solo Ball is giving us the dangerous third head of Cerberus, with Karaban & McNeeley (when back). Johnson’s scoring has stepped up too, really good rolling to the basket. Stewart contributes shooting, but the ball security, yeesh!!

I’m liking the progress, 8-3 in the league, keep rolling on Friday.

How they viewed us – unaltered quotes

Stevie and Chase need to hang on to Karabans jock strap the entire game.
And Hurley better not be intimidating and getting bs calls from the refs.
Stewart is looking like Steph Curry
Damn kid won't miss .: 3 threes he never does that
Why is it so hard for our players to get fouls called?
UConn is fouling every single possession.
UConn looks ready to kill. On another level offensively.
UConn ain't great but this ain't Butler where you can waltz back into it.
They're wound too tight because the other jersey says Uconn on it, even though they look very average
Caraban uses the 2 hand push pick move every time
3 pushes in the back by UCONN on one possession and they still get the ball
Ball answers every single time. Jesus.
I would give up any player on our team for Solo Ball
Solo absolutely killing us.
He wont miss.
Ball every single time
Not only does he have 20 points and six threes. The young man has collected 10 rebounds.
Another one for sake.
They leave Ball again. Cant make it up
UCONN came in focused and got the job done.
Don't know who Solo Ball is but he's a lottery pick.

Really can’t believe they won that game without McNeeley. Wow. Didn’t see all of it so I need a rewatch in the morning. My sense is, everybody stepped up. Every player was better than they were the last few games. Maybe not Reed. Huge.
I think you might see Solo's performance other worldly. And in front of hostile crowd.

Solo Ball is an NBA player, enjoy him now.

Ross had his best game of the season at the best time. Bet he becomes a dude down the road.

Reed was fouled multiple times on his misses, think he played an underrated game.

Everyone wants to talk down on Alex when he struggles, 15 on 8 shots, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and blocks. All American performance for the Cap.

Just one negative. We need a backup point guard, Diarra was dying out there today, and we couldn't keep him off the floor. Nowells injury might be our achilles heel since Diarra will have to rest once he starts fasting.

Agree on all and very good points. Tarris got hit across the arms but Gold before Gold blocked his shot that one time, and he got called for a foul when #13 triple to box him out and missed and fell out of bounds like he got shot out of a cannon. Refs are awful when they don’t actually see the play but react after, hate that.

Diarra got blown by 3-4 times when does that happen. Kid had a rough game but he’s a warrior playing injured, you could see it wasn’t the real HD.

Just a great win with huge dance impact!

Hawk 2 years ago was better than Solo this year.
I dunno. Obviously the final chapter has to be written in Solo’s season before we can make a full judgement - given how Hawk’s season ended, it might be hard for Solo to match that. But Solo’s percentages are a lot higher and he’s shooting 50 percent from three since the new year (36-73) - since a bad game at Butler before Christmas - and that’s a good sample size.

Hawkins was better at squeezing off contested threes since he had a textbook high release. But, man, most days when Ball gets an open look, I’m sure it’s in, and Hawk had more of a tendency to miss the clean looks and somehow make the tougher ones.

I dont remember any high hedges last night, which had been killing us. We were switching everything, which is what I thought our wings were going to be doing all year. Our lineups without Diarra and Mahaney were our best +/- last night. I think we'll be switching everything against St Johns as well.

Just like I said all along. This team needs to make 3's to beat the iron.

Everyone who played participated last night. Everyone scored, everyone had a turnover. That's what we need, no hitchhikers.

It’s been alluded to up thread, but Samson deserves some love for both his free throws and his finishes. His early basket while absorbing contact (lefty finger roll) and his late “and one” were tough plays (although just before that he could have finished an and one too - but he made both at the line).

The lefty finger roll in particular was a really high level play. He powered up from a long way out, took a bump, and still had super soft touch with his weak hand. He’s really added to his game and become more of a threat.

We were still high hedging, and it was working just like it has for most of the season
StJ has a very diff backcourt than Marquette with the much more traditional small lighting quick PG in Smith and a beast of a 2G in Richmond. Marquette is positionless across the 3 guards. Ruis will be an issue, as will Ejifor. They have similar way to winning as Marquette (creating TOs, bad shooting), but much different type of personnel. There are matchup challenges all over the floor.

Ross will get plenty of run Friday against either Ruis or Richmond.

1. Stevie Mitchell was terrorizing both Diarra and Mahaney down the stretch, and is my pick for BE DPOY

2. I REALLY wish our guys were allowed to play defense like Stevie Mitchell lmao
I made a comment in this vein in another thread somewhere last week. If Stevie Mitchell was on UConn and played defense like that, he'd foul out every game. It's like we get dinged for being UConn "and UConn fouls a lot".

There are matchup challenges all over the floor, but a lot of those are in UConn's favor. St John's is a bad perimeter defense team and gives up a ton of 3's. That's something we can take advantage of. This will also be a good game for Samson Johnson, they don't have anyone to match up with him

I have not watched a lick of St Johns, so genuinely asking here, if they are a bad perimeter defense AND have no one to matchup with Samson down low, how are they winning games? Simply outscoring opponents vs relying on defense?

Conversely they are offensive rebounding machine (12th in country) and Ejifor is a big part of that. Keeping guys like him, Luis and Richmond off the O glass will be really important in this one as it’s a big part of their offense. This is a big part of what differentiates them from a team like Marquette, who is awful on the glass. Fun matchup.
