Mark Zanetto talking about uconn in the running for a top European center

I was looking at Diop and Thiam's defensive numbers to Hines - not even close. Your 5 has to have some kind of advantage, length is one, explosive power is another. Hines is probably the best in the country in the explosive department.
I want a two headed monster at center. Always wanted Hines the most out of the transfers.

What’s the deal with zanetto saying this mystery man will be unmarketable in certain states and the south is probably out and he’ll need to be near a city?

Yes, every year we have posters worrying about us having too many good players who need playing time and who will start.
The obsessing over minutes allocation is too much, but it’s fair to question how realistic a “bulletproof” roster is. Everyone would love bringing in another stud (well maybe not everyone since some here will be angry no matter what), but all the reporting and inside info have been that we’re targeting a backup 4 and smaller pieces to round out the roster. No reason to think otherwise at this point

Duke is trying to add a Euro 7 footer, he would be their 4th 6'11 plus guy and three of them are starting level. They also have a bunch of starting level point guards.

I have no idea how serious we are with him or even if Zanetto is right but we're the only fanbase out of the top programs who stresses about being too talented/bulletproof.
I'm not stressed about it, I would do it at every position every year. It just wasn't on my radar when the staff says we're done recruiting rotation pieces at C and then Zanetto says we're recruiting a starter

Queens Italian and actual Italian are not even the same species.

If this kid is as good as he says then we won't bring him in for 2026. Not to compete with Hines. Slap in the face. We need a back up or a power forward / center. Period!

Sort of disagree.

Hurley runs a competitive program. Guys compete for minutes. We just had Jaylin Stewart transfer out after 3 years because he didn't see a path to playing as much as he'd like as a senior. Nothing is promised to anybody, definitely not a guy who hasn't played a minute in a UConn jersey yet.

If you have an opportunity to elevate the roster at this point in the year, you take it every time. Back ups are nice but we're talking about a guy that would probably get drafted this year and has been playing professionally for years vs a rising sophomore that showed a lot of promise.

I think based on the personality traits Hurley and staff filter for, Hines would accept the chance to compete with a guy who gives the team a better chance to win a title, will help him get better in practice, and likely only here for one year. If Hines is reasonable, as a sophomore, I don't think it'd be a dealbreaker.

So true. I have seen it for years on here. People stress about playing time allocation and who is going to be unhappy about it like they are the head coach. Other programs are stacking talent 3 deep at each position while people here are stressing a backup 4 man for us because we have never had a "10 man rotation." It's lunacy.
Exactly right. It’s no secret the so called legacy “blue bloods” have spent untold amounts over the decades. But now that it’s in the open, it’s either pony up or be left behind.

No. He says he's talking about someone who would be a major gamechanger, who could start, who is really tall, who would only play in a certain part of the country for maketing/NIL who St. John's is also looking at. Nova and St. John's are both trying to get Luigi Suigo, that has to be who he's talking about. The Northeast is where the Italians are, he's really tall, and he's a gamechanger type of talent.
The pizza discussion will finally become critically important!

I think that's a recipe for disaster. While it is true that nobody is guaranteed anyone and they have to risk being beat out, I think Hurley is also known for being honest. I think Hines expects to start. I think Giltay expects to get significant minutes. They know they compete with each other, and if Giltay is better than Hines, he'll play. But that different than bringing in a guy like this, neither of the other two would have come here if we had plans to do that. They would feel misled and rightly so. Then next year our reputation would be hurt and guys might question whether they should commit to UConn, especially early in the portal process when they might get recruited over.

UConn has never taken the "maximize NBA talent" approach. We bring in good players who fit what we are doing and who become teammates who pull for each other, not against each other. They become Huskies. It's why we have success and our teams are tough and resilient.
