Maria, Diana, and AB!

2003. The most ridiculous Championship.
2004, the second most ridiculous Championship.
DT and her merry band of non AA! She singlehandedly willed those teams to consecutive Nattys with no other AA on the roster either year. No other championship teams had so few AA as the '03 and '04 teams. They definitely played above their playing weight and I am so happy they did!!

I think the biggest hurdle in 03 was the big and very talented Texas team. Diana just took the team back from a big deficit to unexpectedly reach the finals. I believe this is the "We have Diana and you don't" final 4. I think this year and the next Diana established herself as a total talent, leading her unheralded teammates to two national titles.

Worth noting that besides Taurasi, five other players from those teams played in the WNBA - Strother, Battle, Jessica Moore, Turner, and Crockett.

So it wasn't exactly Moses Malone and four other guys from Petersburg VA. And if that reference rings a bell you are a true hoop fan.

In that Texas game...the semi-final game...I absolutely remember Geno telling the team...trailing by about 9 with maybe 6 minutes to go...that if they had an open layup to shoot it. Otherwise make sure Dee touches the ball on every
possession. And they did...a very close one at the end. I recall one particularly zippy pass from Dee to Crockett for a
layup.

Mount Vernon high school in Northern Virginia, where my daughters went to school, played Petersburg in the state basketball championship. Petersburg had a center named Moses Malone, so their championship was a foregone conclusion.

Nan, you missed an opportunity. The title of this thread should have been "Maria, Diana, and AB, Oh My!"

Many years ago I was in a gym in Newtown. Tacked on the wall was the team rosters for an informal basketball league. Maria was on one of the teams. I thought to myself, hmmm, it's got to be brutal to be on one of the other teams.
