Mahaney enters the portal…

Thanks @tcf15

Just not the right environment or style for AM. League is too physical and the game is too fast for him. But, I hope he does great in the right system and conference. Put him in an A10/ Ivy/ Patriot League and he tears it up.

I bet he ends up on the West Coast. Probably staying close to home removes one less stress factor and helps him to just relax and play his game.

Sadly "staying and proving oneself" is not very common in NCAA basketball anymore. And you can't necessarily blame the player because the coach probably wants them to move on just as much.
As sad as that is I think the days of having a players stay for 3 or 4 years is going to be obsolete because of the portal. I have to say AM was so bad during most of the season I would cringe when he came in, however he did slightly turn it around at the end of the season and was starting contribute to the team. Sadly I did not want him to leave. Hopefully, he gains his confidence by playing more minutes wherever he ends up. I'm sure it was mutual between Hurley and AM.

It is amazing how much a year like Aiden had can impact a career. Last year I think he was in the top 30 players who entered the portal. This year he can’t crack the top 50 or even the honorable mention list after the top 50. I understand this is ESPN but so was the ranking I mentioned from last year.

In fact none of the UConn players who have announced cracked either list. So we are probably losing the right players. Hoping we hear news on the two remaining players who might leave. Won’t mention names one is a forward the other is….well we don’t know what he is SF, SG etc. Also wish we had some affirmation on our center. We definitely need him back.

Certainly what is happening behind the scenes will have a big impact on what we will try to get in the portal. At least we know we need two guards both on the 6’3” to 6’5” size wise but more importantly athletes who can get to the rim. The top twenty is littered with SG who are all in the 6’1”to 6’2” range size wise. I wonder why there are so many players available that size at SG.

I wish him the best of luck
To be honest- thought their would be better offers out there for him- wish both parties decided differently last offseason- wish him the best!

The coach there has nor cal ties and a very good reputation. He is very familiar w Aiden’s game and am hearing this is close to being a done deal.
Do those level schools have NIL or you just get to play and finish degree

The fact he is looking at this level is a good indication he was over his head in the BE and should not have been considered. Maybe he played his best game ever when we played St Mary’s?

There’s a long list of players who’ve had career games against us for whatever reason. Lol

He didn’t play that well in that one at all. But we would have watched a ton of tape in the buildup to that game - including how St. Mary’s did against high majors. He had 20 against Vandy - and had 15 against Houston (4-8 on threes, but 5-15 overall). He was a little up and down, but he had 25 against Gonzaga in the championship game as a sophomore.

When he signed, I liked the idea of him in the Cam role on paper - even if he was a little smaller. But he didn’t have a point guard profile at St. Mary’s. More a scorer who could pass a little. Trying to turn those types of players into point guards is hard. Much easier to take a point guard who can shoot and make them a two guard (Boat) or a point forward (Castle).

I think our coaches know that - and figured they had flexibility with Diarra and Nowell and just a lot of things went wrong. One of my frustrations with Mahaney was that he had no ability/desire to shoot coming off screens. So he couldn’t be in the Cam/JoeyC/Hawkins role either. He needed the ball to stick in his hands to make something happen, and that’s not what’s made our offense go.

I hate posts like this. He was an all-WCC player both years he was at St Mary’s. It didn’t work out here. I don’t get the idea behind continuing to on him.

UConn vs St Mary's wasn't even close to one of his best games, were you familiar with him at all before coming to UConn?

As an aside, nothing wrong with Big West hoops. I figured another WCC school would be in play but either way it's his last year, if I'm him I'm going back to playing 30+ minutes and having the ball in my hands. After his last season of tape that's not happening at a power conference school.

Did St. Mary's recruit over Mahaney? I never understood his decision to transfer. St. Mary's was the right level for him and now he may go to a slightly lower level.

Cool breezes, sunny California, pretty girls, and some basketball for Aiden this year. I think this past year was tough on him. I hope he enjoys being 22, plays some good ball, enjoys Life, and maybe finds himself playing overseas next year somewhere.

You never understood his decision to sign for the two-time defending champs? Who'd just done so well developing Joey C and Cam in the previous two seasons? Really?
The revisionist history happening on Mahaney is wild to see. He was an all conference player at one of the most respected mid majors in the country. He went on an official visit to Kentucky, he was that close to playing in the SEC… it didn’t work out, it happens.

Yup… the board and staff were ecstatic to get him. Kentucky fans were pissed. Mahaney was a huge get and one of the best portal guys last year. It didn’t work out; time to move on and not change the narrative.
