He didn’t play that well in that one at all. But we would have watched a ton of tape in the buildup to that game - including how St. Mary’s did against high majors. He had 20 against Vandy - and had 15 against Houston (4-8 on threes, but 5-15 overall). He was a little up and down, but he had 25 against Gonzaga in the championship game as a sophomore.Do those level schools have NIL or you just get to play and finish degree
The fact he is looking at this level is a good indication he was over his head in the BE and should not have been considered. Maybe he played his best game ever when we played St Mary’s?
When he signed, I liked the idea of him in the Cam role on paper - even if he was a little smaller. But he didn’t have a point guard profile at St. Mary’s. More a scorer who could pass a little. Trying to turn those types of players into point guards is hard. Much easier to take a point guard who can shoot and make them a two guard (Boat) or a point forward (Castle).
I think our coaches know that - and figured they had flexibility with Diarra and Nowell and just a lot of things went wrong. One of my frustrations with Mahaney was that he had no ability/desire to shoot coming off screens. So he couldn’t be in the Cam/JoeyC/Hawkins role either. He needed the ball to stick in his hands to make something happen, and that’s not what’s made our offense go.
