Mahaney enters the portal…

Another nice kid but the Big East and the way we play was just a bad fit for him. Hurley wanted this to work so badly, he loves the kid but it just wasn't in the cards for him here.

He can be really good at the right program for him.

So far we knew everything that was going to happen with kids leaving. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

.-.
Sorry to see him go, but it is for the best. Hopefully he goes back to the West coast where his game is best suited.

I know he got paid a lot to come here but still feel bad for him a bit how this season unfolded. Respect the way he handled it all, seems like a good young man. Curious to see where he lands next, he still has some talent, just didn’t fit what we needed this season.

Probably expected since Maui. He wasn't built for this. Go back to SMC and he'll do great. He took a really hard season on the chin. I respect that
He easily could have quit on the team in January when things were going poorly for him, but he rallied in March to earn 5-7 minutes a game spelling Hass. Best of luck to Aidan.

Best of luck wherever he lands. From my pov he seems like he'd do better in an environment where he would be the ball dominant lead guard as opposed to how the lead guard works in our offense.

Give him credit , never sulked, played hard, and supported his teammates when on the bench.

Yeah, I definitely respected him and especially when it seemed like Nowell would grab the backup minutes. He definitely outplayed Nowell and deserved those minutes at the end of the year. Best of luck and hopefully he can find a better fit with the next club.

I still thinks he needs a PG to set him up but yeah I can see where he could be a ball dominant SG. Never was going to happen here.

I give Aidan a lot of credit for leaving West Coast. trying UConn/BE.. It didn't work out the way he or Dan wanted. He's a tough kid. Has a competitive game for the right place/conference. And hope he kicks some butt at his next stop. He gave it a shot.

.-.
He was always positive and supporting his teammates even when he was having a disappointing season. We might not have made the tournament if he was pouting and being a bad locker room presence. It didn’t work out - but Aidan didn’t sulk.

It’s just unfortunate we only had this guy for one year and the opportunities he got could’ve went somewhere we could’ve got more ROI on.
Well Hurley needed for this to happen to know he can't just plug and play anyone in his system and expect great results. He needs someone who has more athletic ability(strength and/or quickness) or PG skills. Neither of these were Aidan's strengths.

It will be interesting to see how we fill all these spaces in the portal. The college basketball world assumes we have lots of NIL money, but for some reason, our fans do not. It’s gonna cost big bucks to reload this roster.

Good luck Aiden. He was another nice kid. But, lesson learned . As of the moment we are without a PG ! Need to fill ASAP !

BTW, seems only 1 UConn player is able to declare to Portal on a single day. That's probably better than all at once. But, Hurley knew ahead ....

That standard might have caused him to avoid Spencer. Not the quickest guy out there. And maybe Aidan would have been a better combo with Tristen than he was with Solo.

Just about everyone is going to have some deficiencies. You just want the jigsaw puzzle to come together. If you have Hawkins or Ball at the 2, who aren't great breakdown guys or facilitators, pairing them with good passers like Newton and Castle/Jackson is a better blueprint than putting a small 2 guard at the point.

Was thinking the same. In ‘22, we lost a bunch of guys to the portal, panic ensued and it turned out pretty well. Unfortunately, the college landscape is absurdly different from just a few years ago.

I trust the staff has a plan so that gives me some comfort but things could get very interesting if there are anymore defections.

Agree with all of you who say he's a really nice player, seems like a stand up guy who gave his all. Just wasn't a great fit for the Big East physicality or our particular system. Hoping he lands somewhere he's happy and I expect he will be successful.

I remember when RJ Cole exhausted his eligibility, Gaffney and Diggins entered the portal and most of the Boneyard lost their collective minds.

Now it's Diarra. Nowell and Mahaney instead of Cole, Gaffney and Diggins. ASAP may not be neccessary. Let's see how this plays out.
Yeah, I'm sad to see anyone go, but I'm not begrudging them. I like seeing teams built over multiple years...and right now, as it stands (and who knows if anyone else portals...) our core next year will be:

Solo Ball (3 years)
Jaylin Stewart (3 years)
Jayden Ross (3 years)
Tarris Reed (2 years)

I'd like more foundation in theory, but in practice that's usually par for the course these years.

2025

Andre Jackson (3 years)
Adama Sanogo (3 years)
Jordan Hawkins (2 years)
Samson Johnson (2 years)

Richie Springs was there for his third year, but he would have been the equivalent of rooting for Singare, roughly, in terms of minutes. You like it, but it's not as though you developed a relationship.

Now, of course, the portal is still open...

Cam can play the Point as shown last year and I also mentioned strength as requisite which Cam had in spades compared to Aidan who looked like a scrawny teenager. Definitely Cam had more physical tools and also had quick hands on D and rebounded well for his position. Something Aidan doesn't have. I'm still puzzled why Hurley thought Aidan could fit at PG for us with those skills and us already being small at the guards. Just a weird pickup in retrospect. I always thought he would start at the 2 or backup ball as a scorer off the bench. I never thought Hurley saw him as a 1.

Could be 2+ more unfortunately
