Cam averages 11 PPG and shoots 44% from 3.... these type of guys last 10+ years in the NBA.

This is one of the worst takes I have ever seen on this board.... and that's saying something

Why would Bobby want to do that? He’s won over 200 career games, is still a name, and could probably get a head job at a mid major. You think he wants to leach onto his brothers assistant?

This is the same dude who said we should decline the invite to the tourney to avoid the embarrassment of losing to Furman. After Temery’s AI post the other day, I am convinced that iluvedwards cannot be real.

If I see one more person suggest a former player with no coaching experience be hired as an assistant for us I'm going to lose my fricken mind.

Playing and coaching are entirely different skillsets. Hurley was not a very good player. Luke didn't even play college basketball. I don't think Tom did either.

Need I mention Daigenault's stellar college basketball career twiddling his thumbs on the bench behind Calhoun?

Seems like an odd job to cut your teeth as a head coach, but he certainly has had previous offers and chose to accept this one. He's eyes wide open.

Best of luck to him flipping status quo in the ACC and setting himself for a bigger follow-on coaching gig.

LOL. I'm right with you. But this goes back to Ricky Moore, Ray Allen, Doron Sheffer, etc.

Not sure if you've noticed, but everyone here knows more than UConn administration.

Sure, when you're talking about kids with no experience. Gerry Besselink, on the other hand is not only a former UConn player, he coached in Finland. With Luke gone, we will need someone to bring European principles into our game planning. Definitely worth a look.

I heard what you're saying, and it may not be as bad idea, but I have a slightly outside the box idea.

Bill Murray does have some basketball experience (he was in the original Space Jam). If we bring him in to replace his son on the staff we won't lose his presence at our games.

That's a name I haven't heard of in a while.

The most important skill in an assistant is the ability to recruit. Talent trumps all. He won't be on the short list.

Yeah, stop with these former players. Dan knows who the assistants who can recruit and teach and identify talent are. He'll poach somebody we don't know from some P5 school and those who know will say "oh, what a great hire, that guy is a future star".

Blake James is one of the worst ADs in the country. He oversaw the death of Miami athletics which is now finally recovering. It's not a coincidence BCU's progrums have continued to decline under him.
 
Former players have some advantages if you want to have credibility with recruits though. It's hard for a career assistant with no cred from the league to get buy-in. Luke was pretty unique in that his scheming prowess is such that he has legit reputation in NBA circles and that's really rare. Although I think the impact of losing him is less great than it was in years past it's still not easy to find a replacement. If not a former player then someone with deep regional grassroots/AAU ties.
 
On the subject of Murray's departure- I believe his position group were the Bigs. Is it fair to say that we would be looking for a coach with experience in that position group? Or is it less about that than a broader/stronger coaching resume. Nardi and Kimani seem to focus on wings/guards/small forwards. Clearly Luke had broader organizational value with his influence on our offensive schemes and his recruiting excellence other than positional responsibilities.

Pretty sure Dan's phone is going to be ringing after season's end with plenty of unsolicited options-esp. with the turnover we've seen at the HC level in recent weeks and staffs being broken up.

I think his scheming stuff is separate from the bigs skill coaching. He seems pretty good at the latter but it's not like he's inventing new fundamentals there, easier to have someone else do that job I think.

speak for yourself. I hate Duke. I was there in 89. I f----- hate Duke. And its not jealousy bubba. We are not equals. We have won more titles than they the last 26 years without five burger players on every squat.

I think it goes back to your earlier post...what is success @BC? If he gets them to 5-7th in the ACC, gets them in the tourney, wins a game or 2, he will be a hero and will have a top 10 job in <5 years

Can Asst coaches leave for another job like HC's? I know it's based on their individual agreements, but wondering what the general rule is..

If you market is guys without a job, that talent pool is very different

IMO-Frequently assistants have choices when HC changes happen. Example- Nardi when Willard came to Nova and Willard wanted his own guys-Mack leaves Louisville and Murray becomes available for Danny to hire. Assistants leaving on their own while HC is staying is less frequent but certainly happens. Not sure that the contracts at the assistant coach level are anywhere near as rigid/financially penalizing to the assistant coach-institution as HC terms and conditions in their contracts-buyouts, etc. Not unusual for HCs to have their own informal conversations among themselves (relationships-networking) and learning about assistants on the move/or interested. Open discussions-not back door deals. As an example- If an assistant merits a salary bump to a Murray level from outside - Not on current staff- I would think that unless their existing employer could match that increase-A HC would be hard-pressed to prevent them from improving their financial security and better exposure with that more attractive opportunity.

FWIW-Just my two cents- Not a contract law attorney. Just observations over the years.

Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, Clyde Drexler, Juwan Howard, Isiah Thomas, Mark Price, Hubert Davis, Penny Hardaway, Jerry Stackhouse, Reggie Theus, Danny Manning.

Being a great player doesn't make you a great coach but I still think Cam, Steph, and Clingan should quit the NBA to coach at UConn.
