Low/Mid-Major Conference Tourneys

I hear you, love watching the chaos unfold during champ week. Multiview in ESPN+ is my best friend right now
I do like the loud raucous environments in these small gyms that seat under 4,000. I usually don't start watching until the semifinals or finals of these mid-to-low major tournaments.

One thing I don't do is thumb my nose down on these teams like I used to. I would scoff at the idea of these teams, most of which I never heard of or know much about, being able to do anything in the NCAAT as they played in their tiny rinky dink gyms. Only days later in the NCAAT I would see an upset alert update on the bottom of the screen with that same team in a 3-14 seed first round match up leading in the 2nd half. I learned my lesson never to scoff at these teams.

Sacred Heart scored 57 points in the second half to beat Iona. They get #1 Merrimack tomorrow

Last year’s MVC champ (Drake) moves on to play this year’s favorite Belmont

The #1 CUSA seed is already gone. Liberty goes down to #6 Louisiana Tech
Belmont down 16 to Drake with 7 minutes to go! Wild, Belmont has been one of the best mid majors this year

Drake with the blowout. They just own that conference regardless of their record.
Drake absolutely worked Belmont all afternoon. The lack of perimeter defense from Belmont was shocking. Unless Bradley gets the job done now, the Valley is going to get an awful seed in the big dance now.

The MVC commissioner's reaction.

Maybe #2 seed Bradley (20-11, 13-7 MVC) or #3 seed Illinois State (20-11, 12-8 MVC) can salvage it.

Belmont being a #1 seed with a 26-5 overall record and a 16-4 MVC record losing to #9 seed Drake with a 12-19 overall record and a 6-14 MVC record has to be painful for those players. And it looks like the game wasn't particularly close. What can you say, but attribute it to March Madness.

What luck I had for this game. I decided to take a 10 minute break from work and saw the score of this game on ESPN with 1:10 left and watched the rest on ESPN+. Winthrop pulled a rabbit out of their arse by getting 2 steals after that much needed 3 to cut the lead to 4.

Big South tournament was absolutely nuts today. To add to that wild Winthrop finish, 6 seed Presbyterian hit a half court shot at the buzzer to force OT and got the job done in OT to upset 3 seed Radford.

It stinks when the winner of the tournament does not get to go, because they are ineligible. I think it was with Merrimac recently.
That's the challenge of a league like the NEC. It would make sense to not even have these teams play in the conference tournament because it's kinda hollow if the "loser" would still go to the tournament, but when like half the NEC is ineligible teams because that's where so many new to D1 schools out East start, I feel like the league's hand is kinda forced to let them play and see what happens.

We've got quite a few championship games this afternoon that will determine autobids! The # by each team is their KenPom rating.

Noon - CBS - Missouri Valley
  • #75 Northern Iowa vs #104 UIC
Noon - ESPN2 - Big South
  • #146 vs #93 High Point (Youssouf Singare is their backup center)
2PM - ESPN2 - Atlantic Sun
  • #186 Queens vs #147 Central Arkansas
Local conferences like the MAAC, games start at 6PM (Go Fairfield!) the Patriot League (Go Lehigh!), games start at Noon, will have their conference semifinals.

Summit League final tonight as well at 9pm, an in state matchup between UND and NDSU!

Northern Iowa 4 games in four days. Greatest run in Mvc tournament history
Watching them play and looking at their analytics, it's not crazy to say Northern Iowa has one of the most complete defenses in the nation. Will be a very tough out.

Maybe because I'm a little blue that Mark Schmidt retired, but I find it so easy to root for guys like Ben Jacobsen...OG mid-major coaches that prioritize retaining players and developing talent.

Cam'Ron Fletcher (Kentucky --> FSU --> Xavier last year --> High Point) has put the game away for High Point. Hit a dagger 3 to put them up 14 with 5 and a half minutes to go, then got to the line and made 2 FTs the next trip down

14 points and 16 rebounds with a few minutes left. High Point (Youssouf Singare!) will go dancing!

The MVC is an awesome conference to watch. Good teams and good players, a lot of talented high major players in that league and the games are ultra competitive.
One of my favorite leagues and a potential beneficiary of an expanded tournament.

I’m noticing a lot of upsets in these tournaments this year and not in the semis but in the quarters. Tons of #1 seeds being beat by 9s.

Some real chaos all over today! BU toppling 1 seed Navy, UNI winning 4 in 4 days, Queens making their first March Madness by also taking down the top seed in their conference, and UNC Wilmington lost in the quarters of the CAA tourney as heavy favorites to win the conference

That's a really slow clock start. Might have still been in time but I don't know
Yep, the clock didn't start until his second dribble and he got the shot off with 1.7 seconds on the clock.
