One thing in the video that stuck out was the seeming indifference of administration. At one point, the players were going over the allotted time at practice. When a player went to compliance about it, the officer went to Hillsman, they laughed about it and the player was punished.

The SU admin’s indifference to the women’s team is nothing new. See the article below. The entire team, “tired of losing”, threatened to quit en masse if the coach wasn’t replaced. Freeman was more interested in promoting social causes and doing interviews to bother coaching

I'm glad all of this came to light. I went on the record early when I said I disliked him and everything he did. It felt like justification when 12 of 15 players left the program, and now with these allegations coming to light if feels like vindication.. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Freeman was awful. And dressed at times in traditional African garb, which confused some of the elderly RU fans back in the day.

There were far more coaches at major schools who just didn't belong there in that time frame than currently. The tolerance for losing with larger schools has lessened.

The player in question is Tiana Mangakahia.
I haven't listened to the whole video but if she didn't name the player, I don't think it is our place to guess.

I would be surprised if it was Tiana. Per her wiki her father is Maori, who are indigenous Polynesian people of mainland New Zealand.

She also tweeted a vlog featuring her best friends from college Miranda and Nikki, who both played basketball at Syracuse.

Toxic! Toxic! More Toxic! Abusive behavior by coaches with Q threatening to punch players in the face. Q was subject to extreme anger outbursts which he took time to hide from cameras by going into a weight room. There are two coaches on that staff that were retained after Q was fired. Vonn Read and Erica Morrow- I don't see how in God's name the administration allowed that to happen when they did nothing to stop this abuse.
This!! I was thinking the same when “that coach” was fired. How is it that the associate head coach was not aware? He’s attached at the hip of the head coach! WoW! Makes no sense at all unless……he was anonymously giving information to the compliance department or to whomever. SMDH!

Once you listen to the video in its entirety...it's not really a guess who she is talking about if you follow the program. Nothing surprises me in this world.

She said the player averaged 40 minutes per game and had been on the team since she was a freshman and made racist remarks.
The remark is not true, the only players in recent years who averaged 36 or more minutes were Cooper, and Lewis. People should not post things when facts prove they are wrong.
When you embellish your story you cause people to doubt your honesty.
Hillman was an real jerk and we all know that.

Of course the remarks is not true when you take her remarks "literally" and evaluate it without context.
Fact: Not a single player in the NCAA " averaged" 40 MPG that season.
Context: What she said was that when confronted by a player that never got off the bench. the bully said it did not matter because the player that was now confronting her was going back to the bench, and the bully would return to playing her 40 minutes a game or whatever. There is no reason to doubt her & I don't think she was talking about Cooper or Lewis since that bully was also characterized as a racist in her other remarks.

Thank you Captain Obvious. There isn't a single player that averages 40m per game. The point she was trying to make, which the rest of us got, was that it was someone who played significant minutes on a regular basis, whether that was 36, 38, 34 - it doesn't matter. She doesn't need to go look up the statistics to tell the story she was trying to tell. So far you're the only one doubting her honesty.

I know this is a serious thread, but this line is hilarious.

The whole program needs a clean start and I have no idea how that's going to be accomplished with two of Q's former coaches still leading the program. It's an albatross around the hoops' program neck...and at this point, a pretty smelly one.

Clean house, thank the players who transferred in and gave valiant efforts (no quit in the games I saw vs. ND) and then get them a coaching staff who can lead the way upwards.

I think part of the challenge was the timing of Hillsman's firing. If memory serves correct, it was midway during the summer. My guess is that the time to conduct a proper coaching search was going to be problematic while managing summer workouts.

What happens at the end of this season will be interesting. If they remain status quo, that will say lot in my opinion.

Especially since Marianna Freeman was actually a "protégé" of Vivian. She played at Cheney State in the day, IIRC.

The elderly Rutgers fans when we started following were a bit out of touch. My favorite line - we had just had a top level game where RU played Penn State tough in Viv's 1st or 2nd year - and an elderly fan said they had to go over to Rider University to watch some "good basketball". Duh.

I thought of Tiana as the unnamed bully as well, and I’m surely disappointed. There’s absolutely, and there should never be a reason for anyone to bully another person. Sadly, this behavior has become second nature to some folks.

At the time she mentioned two things: it was someone who had been around for 4 years, it was someone who played almost all the time. She said 40-minutes per game to make the point. I think it's fair to say the person was white too.
She actually expressly says that.

Yeah, but keep in mind that is one person‘s statement. We have no idea whether it’s a universal opinion on the team or not. Healthy skepticism is always a good thing on the internet. That said, I came to the same conclusion as you regarding who she was speaking about.

It must be awful being a sub who rarely plays. Not enough is done to keep your value as a player up. Lonely place to be. It’s like you don’t matter if you’re not careful. Coaches could do a much better job of giving out some mercy time to benchwarmers. Look for opportunities to raise the value of everyone on the team. Geno doesn’t bother with that during blowouts. Sure you sacrifice a few points but with a 30 point lead giving a player a chance to feel part of the team is worth it.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I sincerely hope that those who were abused can get the proper counseling. They may well suffer from PTSD and not realize it, and not know how to cope.

As other posters have noted, sadly this happens all too often - and not just in this type of setting. I had a very similar experience at my last job. For 4 years I endured bullying, gaslighting, and mobbing (an actual term that means when co-workers gang up and tell lies to management about another, more skilled co-worker, to denigrate her and make themselves look better). I tried everything: from working harder to the point of burnout, to try to gain management's trust; to attempting to transfer to another department (which was a no-go; management didn't like me, but they didn't want to lose my work either); to looking elsewhere for another job. Nothing worked. And I ended up getting fired for "speaking truth to power" - which put the lie to the company's ethics policies of "do what's right" and "see something, say something."

My advice to anyone in a similar situation? Besides counseling for PTSD, invest in tiny hidden cameras and audio recorders to document the actual abuse. I wish I had done that. Otherwise, it's "you said, they said."
I feel they should also be suing the university.
