If he collects from seven truly local boats, he's likely getting lobsters from about half of the remaining Connecticut lobster fleet.

I doubt there's more than 30 boats in the Sound these days.

Not many boats.

Not many Pots either.

Where we Fish off Southwest Reef and the back of Duck Island used to be littered with Pots. It added to the insanity of trying to land big Stripers and Blues there they would invaribly run you around a lobster pot line and screw you.

was out there a few days ago. Nothing. I dont think any pots. those "used to be" hotbeds at least.

Even those local boats probably aren't fishing the Sound much. They're likely given an allotment for federal waters offshore.
Sounds like “Stonington scallops,” a designation many restaurants and retailers like to use, but which my buddy who lives there noted merely means that they came off the dock in Stonington, irrespective of where they grabbed them.

Not that I’m complaining if I am being slipped a George’s Bank scallop by another name.

The now-closed Skippers' Dock in Stonington used to serve "Sandy Point steamers". Sandy point is a spit of sand between Stonington and Napatree. At the time it was illegal to dig up steamers there due to high Mercury levels . . .

I always liked Clam Castle near Hammonasset State Park. Basic CT lobster rolls, hot lobster, butter, hot dog roll. I don't remember what they cost. Clam Castle does other things well too. Lenny & Joes or whatever down the street always too crowded. Plus Clam Castle has a smiling clam on their signs and stuff. Who doesn't like happy clams?

Slightly OT. Right before you get to Misquamicut, there is this horrible handmade sign at an intersection for Toms Clam Shack. The sign is so poorly done and shoddy, every time we’d go past it we make some sort of food poisoning/diarrhea joke. Anyone actually been there?!

That changed hands a couple of years ago.

Yep. Owned by Donahue’s now. Best chowder imo. I love their RI style but people also rave about their NE chowder. Same as Donahue’s but less expensive.

If any where you buy them markets them as Bomster scallops thats where they come from, the Bomster family of Stonington. They fish from N. Carolina to Newfoundland.

I feel like such a spoilsport writing this, but Lady Hans & I stopped at Lobster Shack after delivering a couch to her son in Branford this morning. My third visit in 4 years.

Nice setting, upgraded covered area w/good picnic tables, sufficient parking, well-appointed porta-potty, attractive signage, really pleasant folks.

The lobster meat and/or the bun needed more butter. The bun was not the kind with griddle-able sides. I generally put minimal-to-no butter on my corn or baked potatoes, less on green vegetables, so there's a reference point for you. The end product simply did not have enough flavor.

The experience reaffirmed a theme that has emerged in this thread: a lobster roll can be a disappointment by not being transcendent. It's that high a bar.

In some ways, it was like eating Pepe's pizza locally when I lived in Fairfield County. Next time, I'll go the extra miles to Lobster Landing to see if, by analogy, it's like traveling further up the road to Wooster Street.

Was up in Groton last night so I hit Abbott's for a reminder of their lobster roll. They had their classic for $18.95, an "OMG" roll reported to be almost twice the size for $24.95 and a "LOL" roll with a pound of lobster for $50.95. Yes, you read that right.

It was late and I wasn't starving, so I went with the classic. I had forgotten that their standard one comes on a sesame hamburger roll. Points off for that; gotta be a New England style hot dog roll. Taste was very good (although not as good as Lobster Landing imo), but definitely smaller than Lobster Landing and more expensive. I should have gone with the OMG, which I noticed was served on a hot dog bun. Overall I give it an A-, with most of the deduction for the choice of roll and the size. The taste was still great though.

Also had their clear broth chowder, which was good not great. Nowhere near as good as Clam Castle or Johnny Ad's.

Caught the Mystic fireworks while we dined though, which was a huge bonus. Ice cream was also very good.

It was jarring when I first saw it on our tray. I thought they got my order wrong and had given me a lobster salad thing by mistake. I was there with my oldest daughter and she doesn’t even eat seafood, but even she recognized from experience that it was small and on the wrong bun. I think she literally said WTF? when I walked out with it.

Wife and I were running late the other day so we went drive-thru Panera. Saw the lobster roll and it flashed into my head like a rhythmic chant “For the good of the ‘Yard! For the good of the ‘Yard! For the good of the ‘Yard!” $16.99? Nope.

I've never really understood the obsession with lobster rolls. At like $25 a pop and needing two of them to fill me up, $50 for a lunch with some lobster on hot dog buns doesn't really seem worth it.
Heck! For another 50 bucks you can go to Nordic Lodge and stuff your face with as much lobster as you want. You can even make your own lobster rolls lol

I hope it's better than this.

Funny, once I told a 10 year old kid puzzled over choosing an ice cream in Martha’s Vineyard to go ahead and get the lobster ice cream. That tag looks familiar.

Been gone for over a year and this debate (and I assume the pizza data) is still going on?

I still remember meeting my sister-in-law in Scarborough ME for lunch on the way back home from visiting family and mowed down about a pound of Maine lobster at and then a few hours later, stopped for an early dinner at Abbott's in Noank CT for another pound of CT Lobster. I don't even debate which one was better and just pat myself on the back for a damn good idea.
