Probably because he is old, male, and bitter about how college basketball is changing for the worse (it is) and how he didn’t get to go out on his own terms (which, rightly or wrongly, he didn’t).
I'm fully aware that he is all of those things. I just like to think that most grown adults that are invited on a podcast to talk basketball would try to stay out of whiny grievance territory for the majority of the time. He just seems like an unpleasant human being.

I thought Boeheim actually came across decently well. I still “hate” him but he was a bit endearing. He is just a man of a different era and is vastly out of touch. I would be pissed if I was a Cuse fan because he seems to understand he has been phoning it on the recruiting trail. The one bit that was stupid was him praising himself for calling Miami out for buying players. Ok, but you also called out Wake dummy.

Boeheim is old and it takes a massive all encompassing effort these days to do a program and let’s face it, he coasted and mailed in toward the end, Great coach in his day but their program just isn’t what ours has become. I don’t hate him the way some do here or even their fans especially because we’re not up against them anymore. Those are BE opponents now.

I agree. He sounded hammered, and even self deprecating at times when talking about his being a cranky old fool.

Hes been coaching since moses wore short pants. I like people who dive right into retirement ready to party. Good for him.

It almost as if he had a choice to end it on his own terms and chose not to do it.
According to NYT and SI, Boeheim announced plans to retire after the 2018 Tournament (which may have had to do with the then recent sanctions) but any Orange being honest with themselves should be able to admit that Boeheim should have retired for the good of the program after the season - 2016 - he made the initial announcement. Then Syracuse made the Final 4 as a 10 seed, which covered up the notion that the game may have past him by.

Hopkins leaving for U-Dub and Boeheim's son joining the program didn't help the original timeline either, but his own terms prevented him ending it on his own terms.

Jim's in luck! They are putting together a live-action Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and they have a part for him:

I'm saying if at any point in the past 10 years Boeheim wanted to retire, he could have made the call and done it however he wanted- early in the preseason and get a retirement tour, at end of last game of the season, whenever.

He chose the curmudgeon route of forcing his boss to make the move and when you choose that path it gets done on the boss's timeline.

I was agreeing with you before the clarification.
